Another great hike this weekend, this time at Durant Nature Preserve, a new-to-us location in North Raleigh, about a 30-minute drive from where we are. We started off from the south entrance at Campbell Lodge.
From the parking lot, there is a short path leading to the start of Lakeside Trail. We took this counterclockwise, past the playground and picnic shelter, the boathouse, the fishing pier, and the campsite, for about half way through. This part has beautiful views of the lake most of the way, plus it is bicycle-free! Then, we turned onto Nature Trail.
The short trail cut through the woods with beautiful fall colors. Then, it ran into White House Road, where we made a left turn, and continued on to Border Trail. Plenty of stuff to see in this section where red blazes guide your way, including Whale Rocks, Wildflower Woodland (of course, the wildflowers were long gone at this time of the year 😆), Vernal Pool (which was bone dry 🤣), and this cool little part where you got to hop across a small stream.
We then switched over to another shortcut at Beaver Pond Trail, with black blaze, which took us back onto the southern part of Lakeside Trail to finish our loop.
We clocked in at 2.89 miles, which took us a little over an hour. It was a very pleasant hike, with diverse terrains, best enjoyed on a cool and sunny day. 🥰
We first heard about the Pickle Festival shortly after we moved back here to NC in 2013, and have been wanting to go check it out for years. But something always came up… 🙄 One year we were determined to make it there, but woke up to a torrential rain that was forecasted to last the entire day! 😆 Needless to say, we never made it there… This year, we finally made it happen! 🥳
We met up with Brad & his family there on a bright April Saturday morning in Mount Olive, NC. The first thing we noticed, walking into the festival, was these rows of brightly colored old cars, all in perfect condition! I would learn later, after a few festival trips under our belt, that these festivals are actually common showcases for vintage cars (& motorcycles). 😉
We went back again this year to take advantage of the NC State Fair Lunch Pass program. This time, we made sure to be super prepared, determined that we would beat the system yet again, even though we barely did the last time. 😛 Before leaving the house, we printed out a map of all the recommended food stops for this year’s best offerings, studied the list and agreed on the top picks for the day.

We left super early, because we planned to grab street parking so that we could avoid paying the $20 fee. And we happened to be extremely lucky to nab a free spot that was as close as we could be from the entrance at Gate 1. The Lunch Pass admission starts at 11:30 am and we got there with 20 minutes to spare. When we got in line, there was only a couple of people ahead of us. As luck would have it, the staff lady decided she’d be nice to us and let us in a whopping 10 minutes early! 🥳
First stop, right beyond the gate, we headed over to Oak City Fish & Chips for their Salmon Pop, which happens to be the winner of this year’s Media’s Choice Best New Food. We got there right before a big crowd so the wait wasn’t too long. To be honest, I thought the salmon was a little under seasoned, and a bit overcooked. 🙄

Next stop was the Dill Pickle Pizza from Rudy’s. We didn’t have high hopes for this one, but it actually turned out to be one of the best dishes we had that day! 🥰
Made an unscheduled stop at Pappy’s for their old fashioned root beer soda pop, served in a tin cup (that we fully intended to bring back for later use at home, but unfortunately it didn’t make its way back with us somehow 😆).
Then, on to my most anticipated dish of the day – the DoriEsquites, from Douglas Farms. This is mexican street corn, served with crushed Doritos in a Doritos bag! All I have to say is, it certainly did not disappoint. 😉
This one, we were originally going to skip, but then overheard a guy at the ticket line raving about how good the rattlesnake sausage was. So, we decided we had to check it out after all. 😆 But, when we got there, we found out they only had it in the form of a corn dog, which happens to be one of my least favorite food items… 🙄 So, I didn’t want to get it. BUT, then we spotted the fried bologna sandwich on their menu, and figured we’d give that a try instead, which turned out to be a great choice! 😛
We spent almost half an hour, walking in circles trying to find my next stop – Hickory Tree Turkey BBQ. 😵💫 We finally found it after spending a lot of effort. The original plan was to try their Thanksgiving Stuffed Turkey Leg, but when we found out it was $30 a pop 😓, we backed out and got a regular Hickory Smoked Giant Turkey Leg (at $17 price tag) instead 🙄. And since we were running super low on time, we got it to go, to share with our fur babies at home. 😻
Managed to stop by for a banana pudding and My Mom’s Magic Punch at OMG! Banana Pudding along the way. (This punch is very sweet and makes a great mixer!)
And, last but not least, a yummie Mini-Blueberry Pie for dessert, from Original Minneapple Pie – which was the perfect ending for our lunch escapade today! 🥰

We returned to the ticket booth to get our money back, with almost 20 minutes to spare! 😎
Just a short and quick post today on the hike we did yesterday at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve. This is one of our most frequented destinations in the area because it is very close by. The trails are perfect for wet days because they are nicely laid out with plenty of mulch. That was exactly why we chose it, since we had just been hit by the storm formerly known as Hurricane Ian the other day. 😬
We did a quick double loop, first counterclockwise on the west side, then counterclockwise again on the east side. No extra loops this time, since another round of rain was looming. As anticipated, it was not muddy at all. But we did see a lot of blown leaves on the ground.
All in all, we clocked in at just a little over 2 miles. It took us almost an hour, mostly because of the steep climb up the dozens of steps on the east side. 😓
Then, we came home and did the Hot Ones Challenge for Joel’s birthday. 😆 This is from a Youtube show where host Sean Evans invites celebrities over for a chat. The guest has to eat 10 pieces of chicken wings, each dipped in a different kind of hot sauce that gets hotter and hotter as the show goes on. Season 19 of the show had just started and they released a box of sauces that would be used for the season, which we ordered for the occasion.
And this is the aftermath! 😂 So, Joel valiantly completed the challenge by going all the way to the very last one. I, on the other hand, gave up after Number Seven since my mouth was on fire 😵 and it felt like my taste buds might not ever work again! 😓 All in all, it was fun, and I was glad we did it, but honestly, I wish the sauces were a little tastier… 😐 To me, most of the milder ones were either too vinegary or too strongly spriced. And the hotter ones just tasted plain toxic! 🤪
We made good on our promise and went back to Lake Crabtree again this weekend to finish the entire loop. 😇
วันเสาร์นี้เรากลับไปเยือน Lake Crabtree กันอีกครั้งตามที่สัญญาไว้เพื่อไปเดินให้ครบรอบสมความตั้งใจ 😇
The sky looked a bit ominous when we got there, and it actually started drizzling right when we pulled into the lot. But we decided to go ahead and start off despite the light sprinkle 😅, which fortunately didn’t last long. And the overcast weather provided a welcomed shade during the first part of the trail, which went through the beautiful yellow wildflower field.
This time we headed counterclockwise from the main parking lot. It was a good thing we did, because the pretty yellow flowers that were in their prime just the week before appeared to be mostly on their last legs! 😅
Before dipping right back into the woods again. Some of the blazes in this part are chipped blue paint instead of the metal plaques we had been seeing so far.
Only one mile in and it already felt like we might be half way along…as it looked like we were directly across from the boat dock, which was near where we started off. But we discovered soon after that the lake actually curves to the right, making it quite longer than what it appeared to be. 😅
The trail continued on to merge with another greenway. At this point, about a third of the way in, it started to get a bit confusing since we couldn’t really tell if we were actually still on the Lake Trail. Just as we were about to whip out the phone to check on the map, we spotted this tiny little sign to our left, assuring us that we were indeed still on the right path. 😊
About two thirds of the way in, the trail hugged right back along the edge of the lake. This part was one of the prettiest parts of it all. I don’t think it was a coincidence that this was the busiest part on the entire stretch! 😆
When I first saw this tree 🤔, I was thinking to myself, ‘What kind of magic trickery is this? How in the world is this tree hovering in the air like that!?’ 🤯 And then we rounded the corner, and I got my answer. 😆
It was not even 6 pm by the time we made it back, but the sky looked almost like the sun was already setting! 🙄 (It wasn’t – sunset here is usually around 7pm at this time of the year) I’m certainly not going to complain about the pretty lighting for my pictures. 😛
We clocked in at 5.67 miles, which took us just over two hours. We were really proud of ourselves, considering how long it had been since we hiked this far, and how out of shape we both were. 😊
This past Sunday was my birthday. I wanted to go hiking but didn’t want anything too strenuous or too far away. It was my day after all, and the goal was to enjoy one of my most favorite activities with as little effort involved as possible. 😝 We finally settled on Lake Crabtree County Park, a location that was once familiar to us but it’s been a while since the last time we were there, as we now live on the opposite side of town.

The lake looked so beautiful when we got there. I had never been here at this time of the year and had no idea there would be large fields of yellow flowers along the shore. I realized I couldn’t have picked a more perfect location! 😍
We set out on the Lake Trail clockwise, knowing we didn’t have enough time to finish the entire loop, but we would still like to try and get out as far as we could before turning back.
The dirt trail was well maintained. There were brightly colored blazes along the way, and every turn was clearly marked. The only complaint we had was that this was a multi-use trail, which means that we had to yield to oncoming bikers from time to time.
I just had to grab a picture with these beautiful flowers. 😊

We clocked in at 3.64 miles that day. It took us almost an hour and a half from start to finish. The weather was on the warm side, but we did have the lake breeze and some decent shade along the way. My only regret is that we didn’t get a chance to do the entire loop, so we plan to go back in the near future to do just that. 😇
This right here was the sole reason why we didn’t have time to finish the lake loop that day, and every single morsel was so worth it! 😆 My husband’s infamous homemade tomato pie 😍 has become my defacto birthday dinner meal over the past few years, every since I decided to give up meat for one week over my birthday (pretty much all I can manage per year 😅). Somehow he managed to improve his recipe each and every year so far! 🙄 We will just to have to wait and see how it turns out next year!

The Magnus Cattus exhibit is the product of local artist and cat lover Matt McCarthy, featuring digital prints of cats in funny poses superimposed all over the world. The title of the show, ‘Magnus Cattus‘, literally means ‘Big Cat’ in Latin – a very aptly named display indeed! 😍
The show runs daily at Cary Arts Center in downtown Cary, from June 2-28. Without further ado, here are some of my favorites. 😻

I accidentally stumbled upon what was to become Joel’s latest ‘happy place’ on Pinterest recently. It was a post featuring something called a ‘garden bar’. Intrigued, I looked it up and found out that it was this garden center in North Raleigh that came equipped with a small bar that serves a limited selection of beers, wines, and mimosas. 😲
As predicted, Joel was totally in! 😆 So, we went and checked out Atlantic Gardening Company one Sunday. We needed plants to grow for the season, and would normally go to the garden center closer to home anyway. But this was ‘way better’ according to Joel, because, “I can sip on a beer while we shop.” 🤣
We did a scouting trip the first time just to the garden bar itself. The small bar is located inside the store on one end, with plenty of tables to sit and enjoy your drinks, both inside and out.
Tasty drinks in hand, we browsed through the entire store, and came home with a small selection of plants to start off the season for our balcony gardening. 😍
By the way, they had a plant called ‘Creeping Jenny’! 🤯

Naturally, my husband wanted to go back again the following week, and then the next. 😐 To make the trip a little more ‘rewarding’ 🙄, I found a new-to-us nature preserve nearby so that we could burn off some calories beforehand. 😏 Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve Park turned out to be such a perfect spot, fully equipped with a park office, a picnic shelter, a children’s playground, plenty of parking, and a nice clean restroom – which is a very important perk in my book! 😊

We were on a pretty tight schedule, since the park doesn’t open until 1 pm, but the garden bar closes at 5 pm on Sundays. 😅 The first time there, we opted to go with the Forest Loop trail. This nice little trail, we discovered, connects with the Mountain-to-Sea trail at Falls Lake. It was clearly marked with bright yellow blazes, and there is a clear sign telling you when you are about to leave their property to continue onto the MST.

We did check out a bit of the MST, just enough that we got a glimpse of Falls Lake, before turning back. Again, a clear sign lets you know you have stepped back onto the nature preserve area. 🙂
With the hiking mission accomplished, we headed on back to the garden bar for the second weekend in a row. I did get to try a different flavor of mimosa this time. 😊 So many flowers were in bloom I couldn’t help but get a little carried away with picture snapping. 😛

Since Joel ‘insisted’ that our garden was still ‘incomplete’ 🙄, we had no choice but to head back to the garden bar yet again the following weekend. 😅 But first, another stop to Annie Louise Wilkerson, MD Nature Preserve Park, this time for the remaining trails we didn’t get a chance to check out the week before.

First, we started off with the Farm Pond trail, a short but very picturesque path along a small pond.
After that, we walked over to the Hidden Rocks trail, yet another short loop that features a set of large boulders in the middle of a forest. This time, we spotted a family of about 5 deer roaming in the woods. And, yes, they did spot us too! 😆
Last but not least, my favorite part of this entire park – the Woodland Village! 😍

Apparently, the staff had set out a little area meant to entertain children. 🤩 It came equipped with a set of crates containing ‘supplies’ – all of natural materials, for kids to make little ‘fairy houses’ in the woods.
The result was an array of cute innovations, all made possible with the most creative of minds. 😍 As you can see, I got carried away yet again with such colorful and plentiful subjects. 😊
The very short trail, nicknamed ‘Troll Stroll’, 😆 connects back with the Forest Loop that we did the week before. I only realized that when we came upon this very distinct tree I remembered from last time!

Just as I was about to publish this post, our sage plant happened to die… 🙄 So, we had to go back to pay the garden bar another visit, yet again. 🤣 This time, we got to explore the part we had never been in before – their greenhouse! 😇

It was surprisingly very cool in there. Our kitchen window sill still had a few empty spots left for succulents, so I conveniently picked out some from their massive collection. 😊
We started off what is shaping up to be the year of unique festival jaunts with a visit to the 2022 Highland County Maple Festival in Virginia back in March. We had absolutely no idea what to expect, but happily accepted the invitation from our dear friends, Brad & Lisa, thinking it would be fun to hang out no matter what! 😆
Joel & I set out Friday morning on a 5-hour drive to Monterey, Virginia to meet up with the clan in a cozy farmhouse airBnB we booked for the weekend stay together. Naturally, we made stops along the way. 😊
First stop for lunch in Lynchburg, Virginia, was at this cute cafe called My Dog Duke’s Diner. The dog-theme restaurant was decorated with canine memorabilia from top to bottom, down to the hooks in their bathrooms! 😍 Food & drinks were both decent & reasonably priced, we left happy and full. 😋

We spent a few minutes walking around and admiring the beautiful downtown area after lunch to digest. The Craddock Terry Hotel was decorated with a shoes theme, to celebrate the history of the location, which used to serve as the 5th largest shoe company in the world! 😳

Nearby Art Alley has a small collection of colorful street art that was excellent for a photo ops! 🥰

Next, we stopped by at Woodruff’s Cafe & Pie Shop in Monroe, to pick up a few slices of their legendary pies. Unfortunately, we learned from a sign posted inside that Mama Woodruff, the original recipe and store owner, had just passed away last year 😢, at the ripe old age of 104. The pies totally live up to all the hype, by the way! 🥰

Our last stop was in Staunton, Virginia, about an hour drive away from our destination. We checked out Yelping Dog Wine, the second dog-theme establishment of the day! 😆
จุดแวะสุดท้ายอยู่ที่เมือง Staunton ซึ่งอยู่ห่างจากจุดหมายปลายของเราแค่ชั่วโมงเดียวเท่านั้น เราไปแวะจิบไวน์ที่ร้าน Yelping Dog Wine เแหมคนรัฐนี้ท่าจะชอบตั้งร้านธีมสุนัขกันจัง 😆
Downtown Staunton is also home to a bookstore called The Book Dragon!
Lunch and refreshments at Back Creek Farm. We had our first maple syrup tasting here, and picked a few to bring home with us. Their maple fizz was so tasty I was willing to drink it despite the below freezing 🥶 temperature outside! 😋
ไปทัวร์ต่อกันที่ฟาร์ม Back Creek ที่เราได้ไปแวะชิมน้ำตาลเมเปิลหลากรส ก่อนจะได้ติดไม้ติดมือกลับบ้านมาหลายขวด ที่นี่เค้ามีอาหารกลางวันเสิร์ฟ ดีที่มีเต้นท์ให้นั่งกินพร้อมเตาผิง ไม่ต้องไปยืนกินกันกลางหิมะข้างนอก 🥶 ซุปผักร้อนๆรสชาติกำลังดี แต่ที่อร่อยที่สุดก็คือน้ำเมเปิลโซดาใส่น้ำแข็งนี่แหละ 😋 หนาวยังไงก็ยังยอมจิบกันได้จนหมดแก้ว
This was the first time I have seen how they attach buckets to maple trees to collect the sap that would later become yummie syrup. 😲
Last stop of the day, perusing the shops along Main Street in downtown Monterey. And a stop for boozy refreshments at Big Fish Cider Co. 😛

And last but not least, Joel & I ventured out on a mini hike within the property we were staying at. It was a tough walk, in subzero temperatures, with the wind howling at us from all directions. We saw some deer tracks, but never saw the actual deer. 😕 Nevertheless, we had fun on the (very) brief outing despite coming home with a seriously chapped face! 😅
The next morning, we had time for just a few more stops before heading home. First up, the Ginseng Mountain Farm & Store.
วันรุ่งขึ้นก่อนกลับบ้านไปแวะซื้อสเต๊กสดๆจากฟาร์มที่ร้านขายของชำ Ginseng Mountain Farm & Store เจ้าวัวตัวนี้ท่าจะรู้ทันว่าเราจะกินเพื่อนมันเลยส่งสายตาไม่ค่อยจะเป็นมิตรนัก 😅
Next stop, at Hiner Town Trout Fishing, where we had the most delicious trout sandwich & trout chowder, before taking home a 5-lb box of farm fresh trout for later consumption! 😊
จากนั้นไปแวะกินแซนด์วิชปลาเทร้าท์และซุปปลาแสนอร่อยที่ Hiner Town Trout Fishing ก่อนขอซื้อปลาแช่แข็งกล่องใหญ่กลับไปตุนไว้กินกันที่บ้าน 😊
We stopped by briefly back in Monterey to snap a few more pictures, before saying goodbye to our friends, and started off on our journey home.
A serendipity stop at Silverback Distillery in Afton, Virginia, made possible only because Joel missed an exit on a highway! 😆 We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here, and were impressed to learn the story behind this uniquely female-owned distillery. Their smoked old-fashioned, made with maple syrup, was very smooth and surprisingly drinkable to an non-drinker like me! 😛
Contemplating where to go hike this weekend, Joel recalled a daffodil cluster we saw in the middle of nowhere on a hike we went on in Chapel Hill last year. So, last Saturday, we set out to see if the flowers were still there. I refreshed our memory by pulling up a blog post I did on this back then, and realized it’s where we found these cute trinkets hidden all over the trails. Hence, the mission expanded to include finding these little gifts in the wild too. 😊
เมื่อสุดสัปดาห์ที่แล้วตั้งใจจะไปเดินป่ากัน แต่นึกไม่ออกว่าจะไปที่ไหนดี คุณสามีเกิดไอเดียนึกขึ้นมาได้ว่าเมื่อปีที่แล้วเราไปเจอทุ่งดอกแดฟโฟดิลอยู่กลางป่าที่เมือง Chapel Hill เราอุตส่าห์ไปขุดเจอโพสต์ที่เขียนเล่าเอาไว้คราวนั้น ถึงได้จำได้ว่าเป็นที่เดียวกันกับที่ไปเจอของเล่นชิ้นเล็กชิ้นน้อยที่มีคนใจดีเอามาซ่อนไว้ตามทาง สรุปเลยเกิดเป็นภารกิจจำเป็นต้องกลับไปเดินล่าหาทุ่งดอกไม้กับของซ่อนหา 😊
The forecast originally called for rain, so we planned to go on Sunday. But, when we woke up on Saturday and saw no more impending rain on the radar, we decided to just go for it. We parked on Laurel Hill Road, right behind the back entrance of the North Carolina Botanical Garden and started off on the Streamside Trail.
เดิมทีกรมอุตุที่นี่เค้าบอกไว้ว่าวันเสาร์ฝนจะตก เลยตั้งใจว่าจะไปกันวันอาทิตย์ แต่ตื่นมาดูท้องฟ้าใสแจ๋วไม่มีวี่แววว่าฝนจะมาซักเล็กน้อย เช็คเรดาร์คอนเฟิร์มดูแล้วก็ไม่เห็นว่าน่าจะมีฝน เลยตัดสินใจไปกันวันเสาร์นี่แหละ ไปจอดรถกันไว้ที่ถนน Laurel Hill ด้านหลังสวนรุกขาติ North Carolina Botanical Garden ที่เมือง Chapel Hill แล้วจึงเริ่มต้นออกเดินด้วยเส้น Streamside
From there, we took Oak Hickory Trail to Elephant Rock Trail. This was where we saw all the hidden trinkets last time. Alas, no matter how hard we looked, we couldn’t find any this time. 😕
จากนั้นจึงต่อไปยังเส้น Oak Hickory ไปถึงเส้น Elephant Rock ซึ่งเป็นจุดที่เราไปเจอของซ่อนหากันเมื่อคราวก่อน แต่คราวนี้ชะเง้อหายังไงก็ไม่เจอซักชิ้น 😕
The daffodil patch was still there, but it was all barren too. 😔
While hiking along Morgan Creek on Elephant Rock trail, Joel happened to spot these bushes with beautiful pink flowers along the bank, on the other side… He was confident we would be able to get to it. 🙄 So, naturally, we gave it a try! 😛
ระหว่างที่เดินกันอยู่บนเส้น Elephant Rock เลียบไปตามลำห้วย Morgan คุณสามีเกิดตาดีไปเห็นพุ่มไม้เต็มไปด้วยดอกสีชมพูอยู่อีกฝั่ง แกมีความมั่นใจว่าเราจะสามารถข้ามฝั่งไปชมกันแบบกระชั้นชิดได้ 🙄 ไอ้เราก็ไม่อยากขัด เอาวะลองก็ลอง 😛
After a couple of creek crossings, and some bushwhacking through our homemade trail, we emerged on what looked almost like a trail on the other side. 😅
All in all, at the end of the day, we had another fun & adventurous hike under our belt. 😇 We clocked in at 3.56 miles, which took us a little under 2 hours, most of which time was spent paving our own way in the wild. 😆
