2022 Highland County Maple Festival

We started off what is shaping up to be the year of unique festival jaunts with a visit to the 2022 Highland County Maple Festival in Virginia back in March. We had absolutely no idea what to expect, but happily accepted the invitation from our dear friends, Brad & Lisa, thinking it would be fun to hang out no matter what! 😆

ปีนี้มีทีท่าว่าจะกลายเป็นปีแห่งการไปชมเทศกาลแปลกๆ 😆 เริ่มต้นด้วยคุณแบรดเพื่อนสามีตั้งแต่สมัยประถม มาชวนไปงานเทศกาลน้ำตาลเมเปิลของ Highland County ประจำปี 2022 เมื่อเดือนมีนา เพิ่งจะรู้ว่ารัฐเวอร์จิเนียเค้าก็มีทำน้ำตาลเมเปิลเหมือนกัน คือตอบรับกันไปแบบงงๆ ไม่เข้าใจว่าเทศกาลน้ำตาลเมเปิลนี่มันคืออะไรแน่

Joel & I set out Friday morning on a 5-hour drive to Monterey, Virginia to meet up with the clan in a cozy farmhouse airBnB we booked for the weekend stay together. Naturally, we made stops along the way. 😊

เราสองคนออกเดินทางไปสู่จุดมุ่งหมายคือบ้านพักในฟาร์มเล็กๆที่เมือง Monterey รัฐเวอร์จิเนียเช้าตรู่วันศุกร์ โดยมีจุดแวะตามรายทางตามเคย 😊 เพราะต้องขับไปไกลถึง 5 ชั่วโมง

First stop for lunch in Lynchburg, Virginia, was at this cute cafe called My Dog Duke’s Diner. The dog-theme restaurant was decorated with canine memorabilia from top to bottom, down to the hooks in their bathrooms! 😍 Food & drinks were both decent & reasonably priced, we left happy and full. 😋

ก่อนอื่นไปหยุดพักทานข้าวกลางวันกันที่เมือง Lynchburg เราเลือกคาเฟ่เก๋ไก๋ชื่อ My Dog Duke’s Diner ข้างในเค้าประดับประดาเต็มไปด้วยของตกแต่งธีมสุนัขสมชื่อร้าน ขนาดตะขอแขวนกระเป๋าในห้องน้ำก็ไม่เว้น 😍 อาหารและเครื่องดื่มรสชาติไม่เลวใช้ได้ อิ่มอร่อยไม่ผิดหวัง 😋

We spent a few minutes walking around and admiring the beautiful downtown area after lunch to digest. The Craddock Terry Hotel was decorated with a shoes theme, to celebrate the history of the location, which used to serve as the 5th largest shoe company in the world! 😳

กินเสร็จขอไปเดินเล่นย่อยอาหารซักหน่อย ขามาขับผ่านโรงแรม Craddock Terry เห็นเค้ามีรองเท้าส้นสูงยักษ์สีแดงตั้งอยู่ข้างหน้า เลยต้องเดินย้อนกลับไปขอถ่ายรูปด้วย 😊 ไปค้นดูเพิ่งจะรู้ว่าเมื่อก่อนที่นี่เคยเป็นที่ตั้งของโรงงานทำรองเท้าที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับห้าของโลก 😳

The Riverfront Park boardwalk offers beautiful views overlooking James River.

เดินมาอีกหน่อยเป็นทางเดินเลียบแม่น้ำ James วิวสวยดี แต่อาจจะเป็นเพราะเป็นบ่ายวันศุกร์เลยไม่มีคน 🙄

Nearby Art Alley has a small collection of colorful street art that was excellent for a photo ops! 🥰

ถัดมาเป็นตรอกเล็กๆที่เค้าเรียกว่า Art Alley ตามพื้นและผนังเพ้นท์เป็นลวดลายสีสันละลานตา เหมาะแก่การถ่ายรูปเล่นเป็นอย่างยิ่ง 🥰

Next, we stopped by at Woodruff’s Cafe & Pie Shop in Monroe, to pick up a few slices of their legendary pies. Unfortunately, we learned from a sign posted inside that Mama Woodruff, the original recipe and store owner, had just passed away last year 😢, at the ripe old age of 104. The pies totally live up to all the hype, by the way! 🥰

Our last stop was in Staunton, Virginia, about an hour drive away from our destination. We checked out Yelping Dog Wine, the second dog-theme establishment of the day! 😆

จุดแวะสุดท้ายอยู่ที่เมือง Staunton ซึ่งอยู่ห่างจากจุดหมายปลายของเราแค่ชั่วโมงเดียวเท่านั้น เราไปแวะจิบไวน์ที่ร้าน Yelping Dog Wine เแหมคนรัฐนี้ท่าจะชอบตั้งร้านธีมสุนัขกันจัง 😆

Downtown Staunton is also home to a bookstore called The Book Dragon!

We started off our snowy Saturday with an all-you-can-eat pancake & sausage breakfast.

กว่าจะไปถึงก็ค่ำแล้วเลยไม่ได้ถ่ายรูป ตื่นมาเจอหิมะตกขาวโพลนไปหมด รายการอาหารมื้อเช้าวันนั้นเป็นบุฟเฟ่ต์แพนเค้กกับไส้กรอก

Learning about barn quilt making at the Highland Barn Quilts Studio, which intrigued me ever since we saw those marvelous barn quilts on our tour the year before!

ใกล้ๆกันเป็นสตูดิโอทำผืนผ้าโรงนา Highland Barn Quilts Studio ถ้ายังจำกันได้เราไปตระเวนทัวร์ตามล่าหากันเมื่อปีก่อนนี้เอง

The studio was located right next to an Amish home with a couple of buggies parked out front! 😆

ถัดไปเป็นบ้านชาวอามิช กลุ่มอนุรักษ์นิยมที่ใช้ชีวิตแบบดั้งเดิม เลยขอไปแอบถ่ายรูปกับรถลากที่เค้าจอดอยู่หน้าบ้าน 😆

Lunch and refreshments at Back Creek Farm. We had our first maple syrup tasting here, and picked a few to bring home with us. Their maple fizz was so tasty I was willing to drink it despite the below freezing 🥶 temperature outside! 😋

ไปทัวร์ต่อกันที่ฟาร์ม Back Creek ที่เราได้ไปแวะชิมน้ำตาลเมเปิลหลากรส ก่อนจะได้ติดไม้ติดมือกลับบ้านมาหลายขวด ที่นี่เค้ามีอาหารกลางวันเสิร์ฟ ดีที่มีเต้นท์ให้นั่งกินพร้อมเตาผิง ไม่ต้องไปยืนกินกันกลางหิมะข้างนอก 🥶 ซุปผักร้อนๆรสชาติกำลังดี แต่ที่อร่อยที่สุดก็คือน้ำเมเปิลโซดาใส่น้ำแข็งนี่แหละ 😋 หนาวยังไงก็ยังยอมจิบกันได้จนหมดแก้ว

This was the first time I have seen how they attach buckets to maple trees to collect the sap that would later become yummie syrup. 😲

เพิ่งเคยรู้ว่าน้ำตาลเมเปิลนี่ทำมาจากยางไม้ของต้นเมเปิลที่เค้าเอาถังมาห้อยเก็บกันอย่างนี้นี่เอง 😲

We learned how maple syrups are made the old-fashioned way at Duff’s Sugar House.

At the other end of the spectrum, Mill Gap Farms has all the latest technology and shiny equipment! 😲

Last stop of the day, perusing the shops along Main Street in downtown Monterey. And a stop for boozy refreshments at Big Fish Cider Co. 😛

สต๊อปสุดท้ายเป็นร้านค้าตามถนนสายหลักในเมือง Monterey ก่อนไปแวะจิบเหล้าผลไม้เพื่อความอบอุ่นของร่างกายที่ Big Fish Cider Co 😛

And last but not least, Joel & I ventured out on a mini hike within the property we were staying at. It was a tough walk, in subzero temperatures, with the wind howling at us from all directions. We saw some deer tracks, but never saw the actual deer. 😕 Nevertheless, we had fun on the (very) brief outing despite coming home with a seriously chapped face! 😅

กลับมาถึงคุณสามีลากไปเดินสำรวจรอบๆบริเวณบ้านที่เราไปพักอยู่กัน หนาวประมาณแทบจะแข็ง แต่ไหนๆก็ไปแล้วไม่อยากเสียเที่ยว เลยต้องจำใจเดินฝ่าลมเอา อุตส่าห์ไปเห็นรอยเท้ากวางอยู่ตามทาง แต่ไม่มีตัวกวางให้เห็น 😕 เดินผจญอยู่ได้ไม่เกินสิบห้านาทีก็เลี้ยวกลับบ้าน ตากลมจนหน้าแดงเป็นลูกตำลึงสุกพอดี 😅

The next morning, we had time for just a few more stops before heading home. First up, the Ginseng Mountain Farm & Store.

วันรุ่งขึ้นก่อนกลับบ้านไปแวะซื้อสเต๊กสดๆจากฟาร์มที่ร้านขายของชำ Ginseng Mountain Farm & Store เจ้าวัวตัวนี้ท่าจะรู้ทันว่าเราจะกินเพื่อนมันเลยส่งสายตาไม่ค่อยจะเป็นมิตรนัก 😅

Next stop, at Hiner Town Trout Fishing, where we had the most delicious trout sandwich & trout chowder, before taking home a 5-lb box of farm fresh trout for later consumption! 😊

จากนั้นไปแวะกินแซนด์วิชปลาเทร้าท์และซุปปลาแสนอร่อยที่ Hiner Town Trout Fishing ก่อนขอซื้อปลาแช่แข็งกล่องใหญ่กลับไปตุนไว้กินกันที่บ้าน 😊

We stopped by briefly back in Monterey to snap a few more pictures, before saying goodbye to our friends, and started off on our journey home.

A serendipity stop at Silverback Distillery in Afton, Virginia, made possible only because Joel missed an exit on a highway! 😆 We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here, and were impressed to learn the story behind this uniquely female-owned distillery. Their smoked old-fashioned, made with maple syrup, was very smooth and surprisingly drinkable to an non-drinker like me! 😛

สต๊อปนี้ไม่ได้แปลนไว้ แต่มาเจอด้วยความบังเอิญ ด้วยความที่คุณสามีขับเลย exit บนไฮเวย์จนต้องอ้อมไปอีกทาง พอเห็นป้ายโรงกลั่นเหล้า Silverback Distillery ที่เมือง Afton เลยหายโมโหได้ 😆 ไปถึงตอนเค้ากำลังจะปิดพอดีเลยไม่มีคน คุณบาร์เทนเดอร์น่ารักมาก เล่าให้ฟังว่าที่นี่เป็นโรงกลั่นเหล้าแห่งแรกในประเทศที่มีเจ้าของเป็นแม่และลูกสาว ขอบอกว่าโอลด์แฟชั่นคอกเทลอร่อยมากกกก เพราะเค้าใช้น้ำตาลเมเปิลผสมแล้วเอาไปรมควันจนหอมกรุ่น ขนาดคนไม่ใช่คอเหล้าอย่างเรายังจิบซะเพลิน 😛

A quick but tasty dinner at The Cotton at Riverside Mill in Danville, Virginia, which wrapped up our short but sweet trip. 😍

ตบท้ายทริปสั้นๆแต่สนุกสนานเที่ยวนี้ด้วยดินเนอร์เบาๆที่ร้าน The Cotton at Riverside Mill ในเมือง Danville ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ตรงชายแดนรัฐเวอร์จิเนียร์ ก่อนเดินทางกลับบ้าน 😍

Girls’ Weekend Getaway in NYC

A few weeks ago, I had a reunion with my dear friend Yauna. Yauna was one of the very first friends I made in Hawaii when I first came to this country. It has been more than 20 years since then and our lives have taken us on separate paths but we found ways to reconnect and remained best of friends. 🥰

ปลายเดือนที่แล้วเรานัดไปเจอกันกับ Yauna เพื่อนเก่าเพื่อนแก่ที่รู้จักกันมาตั้งแต่สมัยวัยเรียนที่ฮาวาย เป็นเพื่อนกันมาจะยี่สิบกว่าปีแล้วเพิ่งได้มีโอกาสไปเที่ยวกันแค่สองสาว (แก่) คราวนี้เป็นครั้งแรก 🥰

We met up on what was supposed to be a long weekend in NYC, but got shortened down to only 2 days due to a series of flight delays. 🤪 We still made the most out of it though. It was so great to see her after more than 2 years! 😍 Due to the shortage on time, we didn’t get to do much, but we still managed to see some very cool things while we were there…

จริงๆแล้วเตรียมตัวไปตะลุยนิวยอร์คกันแบบหยุดยาวสุดสัปดาห์สี่วัน แต่ดันโดนยกเลิกเที่ยวบินซ้ำแล้วซ้ำอีก จนสุดท้ายเหลือเวลาอยู่แค่สองวันเท่านั้น 🤪 ถึงกระนั้นก็ยังพยายามใช้เวลาที่มีเหลืออยู่ให้คุ้มค่า อุตส่าห์ได้มาเจอกันทั้งที หลังจากที่ไม่ได้เห็นหน้ากันมาตั้งสองปีกว่า เพราะว่าเวลามีจำกัด เลยทำอะไรไม่ได้มาก แต่ก็ยังได้ไปสนุกสนานกันตามวัย 😍

First off, we met up with Neha, another dear friend of mine from NC who now lives there with her husband Jack in Brooklyn. She took us to a very cool and unusual exhibit at The Invisible Dog Art Center called ‘Dog Show #1: The Dinner Party’ by Stephen Morrison. It featured dog-themed pieces of all kinds assembled into a display with a dinner table as the centerpiece. The level of creativity was beyond ingenious. Every single thing there brought such a smile to your face!

เริ่มต้นด้วยการไปเจอเพื่อนสาวอีกหนึ่งราย คุณ Neha เป็นเพื่อนสมัยเรียนโทจากที่รัฐนอร์ทแคโรไลน่านี้เอง แต่ตอนนี้นางกับคุณ Jack สามีย้ายไปเป็นชาวนิวยอร์คอย่างเต็มตัว ตั้งหลักปักฐานอยู่ที่ฝั่งบรู๊คลิน วันนั้นอุตส่าห์มาพาเราไปชมพิพิธภัณฑ์แปลกแหวกแนวที่มีชื่อว่า The Invisible Dog Art Center ช่วงนั้นเค้ากำลังจัดแสดงนิทรรศการ ‘Dog Show #1: The Dinner Party’ โดยศิลปิน Stephen Morrison เค้าจัดผลงานชิ้นเอกตั้งเด่นเป็นโต๊ะอาหารที่บรรดาแขกสี่ขากำลังสังสรรค์กันอย่างเฮฮา บนโต๊ะเต็มไปด้วยอาหารหลากหลายชนิดที่ล้วนแล้วแต่จัดแต่งมาตามธีมแบบหมาๆ นอกจากนั้นของประดับประดารอบห้องไม่ว่าจะเป็นภาพวาดที่แขวนบนผนัง แจกัน หนังสือ ล้วนแล้วถูกดัดแปลงให้เป็นเรื่องหมาๆไปตามๆกัน ประมาณว่าให้คะแนนความสร้างสรรค์เต็มสิบ เค้าเข้าใจจัดเต็มกับทุกรายละเอียดจริงๆ

After that, Yauna & I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge on our way back to Manhattan. I had wanted to do this for years and this was the first time I actually got to do it! The pedestrian walkway was a little over a mile long. It took us a little over half an hour or so to get from one side to the other, with plenty of stops for photos in between. 😊

เสร็จจากพิพิธภัณฑ์เรากับคุณ Yauna ไปเดินข้ามสะพานบรู๊คลินกลับไปฝั่งแมนฮัตตันกันสองคน เราตั้งใจจะมาเดินที่นี่หลายทีแล้ว แต่เพิ่งจะได้มีโอกาสมาถึงที่ก็คราวนี้แหละ สะพานช่วงที่ให้คนเดินมีความยาวประมาณไมล์นิดๆ หรือประมาณเกือบๆสองกิโล ใช้เวลาเดินจากฝั่งนึงไปถึงอีกฝั่ง รวมทั้งแวะถ่ายรูปด้วยแล้ว ประมาณครึ่งชั่วโมงกว่าๆได้ 😊

From there, we made our way to Chinatown. This place seems to have gotten a lot more colorful since the last time I was here, years ago!

กลับมาถึงฝั่งนี้เราไปต่อกันที่ไชน่าทาวน์ มาคราวนี้รู้สึกว่าแถวนี้จะมีสีสันกว่าคราวก่อนที่มาเมื่อหลายปีที่แล้วเยอะ เลยได้เดินถ่ายรูปกันอย่างเพลิดเพลิน

For dinner, we got a very sumptuous meal of abalone congee, garlic and pepper crab, and sauteed morning glory with bean paste (not pictured, and they call it ‘chinese spinach’ in their menu 🙄) at Congee Village. All the dishes were very tasty, despite only 3 stars on Yelp! 😆

คืนนั้นเดินกันจนหมดแรง ตกลงได้ไปกินข้าวเย็นกันที่ร้าน Congee Village อาหารเค้ารสชาติดีใช้ได้ ทั้งๆที่รีวิวโชว์ว่าได้แค่ 3 ดาวเท่านั้น 😆 เราสั่งโจ๊กเป๋าฮื้อ ปูทอดกระเทียมพริกไทย และผักบุ้งผัดเต้าเจี้ยว (ซึ่งในเมนูเค้าเรียกเป็น chinese spinach 🙄)

The next morning, we started off with a brunch at Egg Shop.

เช้าวันรุ่งขึ้นเราไปเริ่มต้นมื้อแรกกันที่ร้าน Egg Shop

Then, we went back to Chinatown to pick up some herbs I couldn’t get in NC (because the stores were already closed when we got there the day before 😛), before walking back to our airBnB in East Village to drop off the goods. Plenty of cool street art along the way! 🥰

จากนั้นต้องเดินกลับไชน่าทาวน์กันอีกรอบ เพราะตั้งใจมาซื้อสมุนไพรและของแห้งที่หาซื้อแถวบ้านไม่ได้ (เพราะคืนก่อนมาเย็นไปร้านปิดกันหมดแล้ว 😛) เสร็จแล้วต้องแบกของกลับไปเก็บที่ที่พักย่าน East Village ยังดีที่ว่าระหว่างทางมีสตรีทอาร์ตสวยๆให้ชมตลอดทาง 🥰

After a short break, we soldiered on to Koreatown where we had yet another sumptuous lunch at miss KOREA BBQ. Both of us originally thought the name referred to the beauty pageant but after Yauna spotted the name written in Korean, we finally realized that they meant ‘miss’ in the nostalgic sense, as in the act of ‘missing’ presumably the food from Korea! 😆

กลับถึงที่พักได้นั่งพักซักแผลบแล้วค่อยแวบออกไปกันอีกรอบ คราวนี้ไปกินมื้อกลางวันกันที่ Koreatown คุณ Yauna เป็นคนเลือกร้านชื่อ miss KOREA BBQ ตอนแรกที่ได้ยินชื่อก็เข้าใจกันว่าเค้าหมายถึงนางงามเกาหลี ยังงงๆว่าทำไมตั้งชื่อร้านแปลกจัง ไปนั่งในร้าน Yauna เหลือบไปเห็นชื่อร้านเขียนเป็นภาษาเกาหลีถึงได้รู้ว่าจริงๆแล้วเค้าหมายถึง ‘miss’ คือคิดถึง ประมาณว่าคิดถึงอาหารจากบ้านเกิดเมืองนอนอะไรประมาณนี้ 😆

We ended the day with an omakase meal at Sushi Kai. Unfortunately I was still full from our Korean meal, and did not get to enjoy it as much as I hoped to. 😣

กินเนื้อย่างเกาหลียังไม่ทันย่อยก็ถึงเวลาต้องกินกันอีกรอบซะแล้ว ถ้าไม่ติดว่าเสียเงินจองไว้แล้วคงจะยกเลิกแน่ๆ แต่ถึงป่านนั้นก็สายเกินการ เลยต้องจำใจไปกระเดือกกันต่อที่ร้าน Sushi Kai ซูชิเค้าก็สดใหม่ใช้ได้ แต่ด้วยความที่ยังอิ่มเหลือเกินเลยไม่รู้สึกอร่อยซักเท่าไหร่ 😣

We ended the night with an Innisfree Korean face mask session – one of the goodies we picked up from a beauty shop in Koreatown. 😊

กลับบ้านมาอาบน้ำอาบท่าเสร็จแล้วขอประทินโฉมกันด้วย face mask ยี่ห้อ Innisfree จากเกาหลีที่เพิ่งไปได้มาจาก Koreatown วันนั้นเอง 😊

The next morning, we had some relaxing time at AIRE Ancient Baths in Tribeca. This came with glorious reviews on several platforms, but honestly, I didn’t really get all the hype after experiencing it… Perhaps the fancy luxury spa was just too posh for a small city girl like me! 😛

เช้าวันรุ่งขึ้นได้เวลาเก็บกระเป๋ากลับบ้าน ก่อนขึ้นเครื่องมีเวลาแวะไปแช่น้ำแร่กันที่ AIRE Ancient Baths ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่ย่าน Tribeca สปาแห่งนี้ใครๆว่ากันว่าดีนักหนา แต่ไปลองมาแล้วเราว่าก็งั้นๆแหละ ไม่ค่อยเข้าใจว่าทำไมคนอื่นเค้าชอบใจกันนัก อาจจะเป็นได้ว่าสปาเค้าหรูเกินไปสำหรับสาวบ้านนอกอย่างเราๆ 😛

Last but not least, we can’t have a trip to New York City without a meal of Thai food! 😋 Soothr Thai Noodle Bar perfectly scratched that itch for me this time around. We ordered Roasted eggplant salad, Sukhothai Tom Yum noodle, Nam-Tok Moo, and Sticky rice with Thai egg custard. Every single dish tasted as yummy as they look, making this the perfect ending to our girls’ getaway!

ท้ายที่สุด ไปถึงนิวยอร์คทั้งทีที่พลาดไม่ได้ก็คืออาหารไทยอร่อยๆซักมื้อ 😋 วันนั้นก่อนขึ้นเครื่องเราไปแวะทานมื้อกลางวันกันที่ร้าน Soothr Thai Noodle Bar ทุกอย่างที่สั่งมารสชาติกลมกล่อมสมใจอยาก ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ยำมะเขือยาว ก๋วยเตี๋ยวสุโขทัยต้มยำ น้ำตกหมู หรือข้าวเหนียวสังขยา เป็นการส่งท้ายทริปนี้ด้วยความสมบูรณ์แบบดีแท้

It was a short trip, but packed full of quality times with dear friends and I enjoyed every single minute of it. 🥰

ถึงแม้ว่าจะเป็นทริปสั้นๆแต่ก็เต็ม(พุง)อิ่มไปด้วยความสนุกสนานคุ้มค่าทุกนาที 🥰

Pandemic Pause: Hiking at Uwharrie

On our last day in Asheboro, we stopped by to hike at Uwharrie National Forest. We had been eyeing this trail for years, having spotted the signs for it every time on our way to Charlotte, but never found a good time to actually make a stop, until now! 🥳

วันสุดท้ายก่อนกลับจากเมือง Asheboro เราแวะไปเดินป่ารอบสุดท้ายกันที่ Uwharrie National Forest ที่นี่เล็งกันมาหลายปี เวลาขับรถไปกลับเมือง Charlotte ทีไรต้องผ่านทุกที เห็นทีไรก็ว่าต้องหาเวลามาลองเดินกัน แต่ไม่เคยได้ฤกษ์ดีซักที จนมาเที่ยวนี้นี่แหละ 🥳

I heard about Pisgah Covered Bridge and wanted to stop by to take a look at this historical spot, which is one of the two remaining such bridges in the state of North Carolina. The bridge crosses the West Fork Branch of the Little River and was built at the low low price of $40 back in 1911! 😆

ก่อนมาอ่านเจอว่าสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำ Pisgah Covered Bridge แห่งนี้เป็นสถานที่สำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ เพราะเป็นสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำที่มีหลังคาคลุมหนึ่งในจำนวนที่เหลืออยู่แค่สองแห่งในรัฐนี้ เลยตั้งใจไว้ว่าต้องแวะมาดูกัน สะพานนี้ทอดข้ามแม่น้ำ Little River ด้านฝั่งตะวันตก สร้างขึ้นเมื่อปีค.ศ. 1911 ด้วยค่าใช้จ่ายเพียง 40 ดอลล่าร์เท่านั้น 😆

Joel looked at the trail map beforehand and said we could just hike the Uwharrie Trail from here, which was what we set out to do. We followed the path right next to the bridge and braced ourselves for the long hike… Imagine our surprises when it led us back to the bridge in just under five minutes! 🤣

We looked left and right but couldn’t find any other trails nearby. Finally, we had to resort to plan B, which was to drive all the way to the other side of the forest to Joe Moffitt Trailhead. From there, we took the trail north, heading towards King Mountain.

หันซ้ายหันขวาเดินวนอยู่หลายรอบก็ไม่เห็นเจอทางอื่น สรุปแล้วเลยต้องไปแผนสำรองคือขับรถไปอีกฝั่งของพาร์คไปเริ่มต้นที่เส้นทางเดินป่า Joe Moffitt กันแทน จากที่นั่นเรามุ่งหน้าขึ้นเหนือไปยังยอดเขา King Mountain

The trail was pretty well marked, with big white color blazes, which normally would be the hardest to spot, but the ones here were pretty big so we didn’t really have any trouble with them. I recently went hiking with a couple of non-hiker friends and realized that maybe I should share a couple of small tips that’s pretty common knowledge among avid hikers, but might not be as obvious for a novice. When you see a single blaze, it means you should continue straight along the same path. But when you notice a double blaze, it means there is a turn in the trail at that spot. Different color blazes signal that you are switching from one trail to another. My non-hiker friends were quite impressed with my basic hiking skills when I mentioned these to them. 😇

ทางที่นี่มีหมุดบอกทางสีขาว ซึ่งปรกติจะดูยากหน่อย เพราะมันกลมกลืนไปกับลายไม้ แต่ของที่นี่เค้าเพ้นท์ไว้อันโต เลยหาไม่ยากเหมือนที่อื่น เมื่อไม่นานมานี้ได้มีโอกาสไปเดินป่ากับเพื่อนซึ่งไม่ใช่นักเดินป่ามืออาชีพอย่างเรา 😎 เลยนึกขึ้นได้ว่าเราควรจะอธิบายเคล็ดลับเกี่ยวกับเจ้าหมุดบอกทางในป่าพวกนี้ซักหน่อย คนที่เดินป่าบ่อยๆจะรู้กัน แต่ถ้าคนที่ไม่คุ้นส่วนใหญ่จะไม่รู้ว่าหมุดอันเดียวหมายความว่าให้ตรงไปทางนี้เรื่อยๆ แต่ถ้าเจอหมุดคู่แปลว่าเป็นทางเลี้ยว ส่วนหมุดสองสีคือเป็นสัญลักษณ์ว่าเรากำลังเริ่มเปลี่ยนทางจากเส้นนึงไปอีกเส้นนึง เพื่อนเราประมาณว่าซูฮกกับทักษะการเดินป่าขั้นพื้นฐานของเรามาก 😇 แต่จริงๆแล้วคือก็รู้อยู่เท่านี้แหละ พอไปวัดไปวาได้ไม่หลง 😆

It was mostly typical winter scenes with bare branches along the way, but we did get a peek of bright green mosses every now and then. The day was cold, with temperature hovering in the low 40s the entire day.

วิวที่นี่ก็เป็นต้นไม้ใบโกร๋นตามสไตล์ป่าหน้าหนาว แต่ก็พอมีหญ้ามอสเขียวขจีให้ได้เห็นอยู่ประปราย วันนั้นอากาศค่อนข้างเย็น ประมาณ 40 องศาฟาเรนไฮต์หรือประมาณ 4-5 องศาเซลเซียสตลอดทาง

We made it up to the highest point of the Uwharrie at King Mountain, elevation 1,020 feet!

ในที่สุดก็ตะกายขึ้นไปถึงยอดเขา King Mountain กันจนได้ ที่นี่เป็นจุดสูงสุดของพาร์คนี้ ความสูงอยู่ที่ 1,020 ฟุต

Took a little detour on an offshoot trail towards campsite number 7. There was a plaque commemorating the building of the site, along with grills for cooking convenience.

แวะทางแยกเข้าไปดูแคมป์เบอร์เจ็ด เค้ามีป้ายบอกที่มาของทำเลที่ตั้งและผู้มาก่อสร้าง แถมมีเตาบาร์บีคิวไว้ให้ปิ้งย่างอาหารกันตามสะดวก

There was an old gold mine along the way. Things got a little confusing here as this large flock of birds were swarming right above our heads. They were so loud it was quite terrifying. 😱 We got disoriented and went a bit off course, but fortunately were able to realize our mistake pretty quickly before turning back on the right path.

ขากลับเดินผ่านเหมืองทองเก่า เดินเลยมาหน่อยเจอฝูงนกบินอยู่เหนือหัวเสียงดังมาก ตอนแรกตกใจไม่รู้ว่าเสียงอะไร ชะเง้ออยู่ซักพักถึงได้รู้ว่าเป็นนก ไม่เคยได้ยินเสียงนกดังขนาดนี้มาก่อน 😱 ส่องดูกันจนเดินหลงไปอีกทาง ดีที่ไปไม่ไกลมารู้ตัวถึงได้เดินกลับมาถูกทางกันได้

We clocked in at 4.38 miles, which took us almost 2.5 hours. Quite a bit of elevation gain because of that climb up the mountain! 😓

วันนั้นเดินกันไป 4.38 ไมล์หรือประมาณ 7 กิโล ใช้เวลาทั้งหมดสองชั่วโมงครึ่ง รวมทั้งที่ต้องปีนขึ้นเขา กับที่ไปเดินหลงกันอยู่พักใหญ่ 😓

We had the Chicken Salad Chick leftovers when we got back to the car.

Pandemic Pause: Rainy Day at NC Zoo

A visit to the North Carolina Zoo was a no-brainer on our Getaway Asheboro trip since it was located literally almost right next to the outpost! At night, we heard animal howls and cries from our cabin, which further confirmed our proximity to this awesome spot. 😆

ไปถึงเมือง Asheboro ทั้งทีก็ต้องแวะไปเที่ยวสวนสัตว์รัฐนอร์ทแคโรไลน่ากันซักหน่อย ไม่งั้นเค้าจะว่าไปเสียเที่ยว โดยเฉพาะเห็นทำเลที่ตั้งซึ่งอยู่ติดกับที่พักเราพอดิบพอดีเชียว ใกล้กันขนาดที่ว่าตอนกลางคืนได้ยินเสียงสิงสาราสัตว์ต่างๆเห่าหอนให้นอนฟังกันแบบเพลินๆ 😆

We checked the weather forecast right before we left and were well aware that it was going to be a rainy day. However, the zoo required ticket reservation prior to arrival due to their COVID-19 protocols. So, we decided to take the chance and reserved our tickets for the 12:30 pm time slot, fully prepared to abandon them if the rain wouldn’t let off by then. 🙄

ก่อนไปเช็คพยากรณ์อากาศดูก่อนแล้วว่าวันนั้นฝนตกแน่นอนร้อยเปอร์เซ็นต์ แต่เผอิญว่าเวบไซต์ที่สวนสัตว์ประกาศไว้ว่าต้องจองตั๋วก่อนไปถึงจะเข้าชมได้ตามระเบียบยุคโควิด เราคิดสะระตะดูแล้วตัดสินใจกันว่ายอมเสี่ยงจองตั๋วรอบเที่ยงครึ่งไว้ละกัน ถ้าฝนหยุดก็ไป ถ้าไม่หยุดก็ยอมอด 🙄

Fortunately for us, it was perfect timing! The parking lot was deserted when we arrived at the zoo at our appointed time right when the rain died down to barely a drizzle.

ปรากฎว่าโชคดีแท้ไปถึงฝนหยุดเกือบสนิทพอดี๊พอดี ลานจอดรถกว้างขวางมีรถจอดอยู่แค่ไม่กี่คัน

It felt almost like we had the entire place to ourselves. Most of the shops and concession stands were closed, understandably.

เข้าไปถึงเหมือนมาทัวร์ส่วนตัว แทบจะไม่มีคนอื่นเลย ร้านค้าปิดกันหมดเดินแล้วเหมือนมาสวนสัตว์ร้าง 😅

This black bear was playing peekaboo with us. We stood there for 10 minutes stalking him, while he kept peeking out every few minutes to see if we’re gone yet. 🤣

All in all, we had a good visit. Even though we didn’t get to spot a few animals we were hoping to see, but we appreciated the no-crowd aspect of the experience, especially right in the middle of a bad COVID-19 surge back in December. 😷

สรุปว่าถึงจะอดเห็นสัตว์ป่าอยู่หลายชนิด แต่ก็มาเดินเล่นกันได้เพลินๆอย่างปลอดภัยไร้ผู้คน เหมาะกับสถานการณ์โควิดที่พุ่งทะลุเป้าอยู่ในช่วงนั้นเมื่อต้นเดือนธันวาคมที่แล้ว 😷

We squeezed in a cool hike at the end of the day at Purgatory Trail. The trailhead is located right at one end of the zoo parking lot, on the North America side. Several signs gave clear direction along the way.
