Travel Diary: The Ultimate Fall Foliage in New England, Day 1

Since we are about to leave for my second trip to New England in a few weeks, I figured it’s about time I put these posts up from my last trip there… 😅

เหตุมีอยู่ว่า กำลังเตรียมตัวจะกลับไปเยี่ยม New England อีกรอบกับคุณสามีอีกไม่กี่อาทิตย์หน้า เลยเพิ่งนึกขึ้นมาได้ว่ายังไม่ได้โพสต์รูปจากที่ไปมารอบที่แล้วเลย 😅

After hearing people raving on and on about how you absolutely need to go to New England for the best fall foliage, and seeing all these amazing pictures of the exploding colors posted on social media, I finally got the chance to cross that off my bucket list back in the Fall of 2022. Yok and I met up at Boston Logan International Airport one cool Fall day in early October, picked up our rental car, and set off on our weeklong grand tour of New England to hunt for the best fall colors. 🥳

หลังจากที่ได้ยินคำร่ำลือมานานว่าถ้าอยากไปดูใบไม้เปลี่ยนสีสวยๆ ต้องไปดูที่ New England ประกอบกับเห็นภาพใบไม้สีจัดจ้านจากหลายๆท่านที่ไปมาแล้วถ่ายมาอวดลงโซเชียลกันระนาว เราเลยได้โอกาสไปท้าพิสูจน์ความงามด้วยตาตัวเองเมื่อฤดูใบไม้ร่วงปี 2022 ถกกันอยู่นานว่าจะเลือกไปช่วงไหนดี แต่สุดท้ายก็จัดเอาตามความสะดวก ไปนัดเจอกับคุณนายหยก เพื่อนสาวเจ้าเก่าที่สนามบินเมืองบอสตันตอนต้นเดือนตุลา จากนั้นก็จัดการไปรับรถเช่า แล้วจึงออกเดินทางไปตามล่าหาใบไม้สีสวยกันที่ New England ตามแปลนที่ไปตระเตรียมมาเป็นอย่างดี 🥳

We began the trip with cautious optimism on our drive from Boston to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Things were looking pretty promising when we first started off. 🤩

ออกรถมาเพื่อมุ่งตรงไปที่ทะเลสาบ Winnipesaukee ในรัฐนิวแฮมเชียร์เป็นจุดแรก ดูจากสภาพต้นไม้ตามรายทางแล้วค่อยใจชื้นขึ้นมา เพราะเห็นมีสีเหลืองแดงโผล่มาให้เห็นเป็นหย่อมๆ 🤩

But the trees were ominously very very green at our first stop in Alton Bay. 😬

แต่พอไปถึงจุดแวะชมวิวแห่งแรกที่ Alton Bay เริ่มจะชักไม่ค่อยแน่ใจ เพราะต้นไม้ตามริมอ่าวดูยังเขียวขจีไม่มีวี่แววว่าจะผลัดใบเลยซักเล็กน้อย 😬

At out next stop on the boardwalk in Weirs Beach, we started to see a bit more colors. 🥺

ต่อมาที่ริมชายหาด Weirs Beach เพิ่งจะเริ่มเห็นความมีสีสันโผล่ขึ้นมาบ้าง 🥺

Meredith Marina would be so much prettier with better fall colors…but they do have this cool sculpture ‘Poured’ at Clough Park. 😍

วิวที่ท่าจอดเรือ Meredith Marina ดูแล้วสวยดีก็จริง แต่ถ้ามีสีใบไม้แดงๆมาแต่งเติมซะหน่อยคงจะสวยกว่านี้… แต่ก็ยังดีที่เดินมาหน่อยมีรูปปั้นแปลกตาชื่อ ‘Poured’ อันนี้ตั้งไว้ให้ดูที่สวนสาธารณะ Clough Park 😍

Our fall spirits were evidently much lifted at Moulton Farm with the beautiful assortment of pumpkins on display. 🥰

มาได้บรรยากาศฤดูใบไม้ร่วงกันแบบจัดมาเต็มๆก็ที่ Moulton Farm ที่เค้าตกแต่งไว้อย่างละลานตาด้วยฟักทองนานาพันธุ์ 🥰

We ended our short-ish first day with our check in at the lovely Sutton House B & B in Center Harbor.

จบวันแรกแบบสั้นๆด้วยการเช็คอินเข้าพักที่ Sutton House B & B ในเมือง Center Harbor

Spring Hikes: Failed Morel Hunts

We finally went back hiking again after a really long winter hiatus where I was out of the country for the most part. This Spring, our friends at the Facebook NC Mushroom Group have been bragging about their morel finds since mid March! Naturally, we had to find time to venture out and see if we can replicate. 😉

ไม่ได้ไปเดินป่ามาซะนาน เพราะมัวแต่หยุดยาวไปหนีหนาวที่ต่างเมืองกันมา พอฤดูใบไม้ผลิเริ่มมาเยือน แอบไปเห็นเพื่อนๆในกลุ่มชมรมคนรักเห็ดในเฟซบุ๊กประจำรัฐนอร์ทแคโรไลน่ามาโพสต์กันตรึมว่าไปเจอเห็ดมอเรลผุดขึ้นมาเต็มป่าตั้งแต่กลางเดือนมีนา ซึ่งถือว่าเร็วมากสำหรับแถบนี้ เลยต้องหาเวลาไปเข้าป่าหาเห็ดกันดูมั่ง 😉

We first tried Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve, where we have found plenty of mushrooms in the past. But no such luck this time around. 😕 There were plenty of pretty wildflowers, but no mushrooms whatsoever!

ก่อนอื่นเราไปลองเสี่ยงโชคกันที่ Swift Creek Bluffs Nature Preserve ซึ่งเคยไปเห็นว่ามีเห็ดขึ้นอยู่ชุกชุม แต่ปรากฎว่าปีนี้เห็ดหดหายกันไปหมด 😕 แต่ก็ยังดีที่มีดอกไม้ป่าสวยๆไว้ให้ชมอยู่บ้าง ไม่ถึงกับเสียเที่ยว

Next up was Durant Nature Preserve, which we went in Fall last time and saw beautiful foliage there. The lake looks very different in the Spring afternoon light. The were signs of newly sprung life everywhere, but, alas, still no mushrooms in sight! 😔

อาทิตย์ถัดไปเราเปลี่ยนแผนไปที่ Durant Nature Preserve กันแทน คราวก่อนไปตอนช่วงใบไม้กำลังเปลี่ยนสีเจอวิวทะเลสาบกำลังสวยพอดี คราวนี้ได้เปลี่ยนบรรยากาศไปอีกแบบ ต้นไม้ดอกไม้กำลังแข่งกันแตกหน่อผลิใบเขียวขจีไปทั่วทั้งป่า แต่ทว่าไม่มีเห็ดโผล่มาให้เห็นซักดอก 😔

My favorite find that day was this Little Free Library with this hilariously-titled book, ‘I Hate to Read’, hidden inside. 😂

ไฮไลต์วันนั้นคือห้องสมุดแจกฟรีสีแดงอันนี้ที่คุณสามีตาดีไปเห็นหนังสือชื่อชวนฮาซ่อนอยู่ตรงริมในสุด แปลตรงตัวได้ว่า “ฉันเกลียดหนังสือ” 😂

Lastly, we gave it another try this past Sunday at Lake Raleigh Woods, where the conditions seem to fit all our morel requirements. Yet, the elusive mushroom has proven to be beyond our reach once again! 😭

ล่าสุดเมื่อวันอาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมา เราไปลองเสี่ยงโชคกันอีกทีที่ Lake Raleigh Woods ซึ่งไปค้นคว้ามาแล้วว่าทำเลที่ตั้งเหมาะเจาะ ตรงตามที่ตำราว่าไว้ทุกอย่าง หากทว่า งมหากันเกือบสองชั่วโมง ยังไงก็ไม่เจอเห็ดที่ตั้งใจมาเก็บซักดอก 😭

The only mushrooms we found that day was this lone flush of train wreckers… 😞

มีเจออยู่กอเดียวคืออันนี้ที่เค้าเรียกกันว่า train wreckers เพราะชอบขึ้นอยู่ตามท่อนไม้บนรางรถไฟ 😞

We did, however, find a few very unusual things I have never seen before… Like this beautiful Dwarf Crested Iris. 😍

แต่ถึงจะไม่เจอเห็ด ก็ยังไปเจอของแปลกตาหลายอย่าง เช่นดอกไอริสป่าสีม่วงสวยดอกนี้ 😍

These little brown jugs. 😮

และดอกไม้ทรงประหลาดที่มีชื่อแปลตรงตัวว่า เหยือกน้อยสีน้ำตาล 😮

And lastly, these pretty red polka-dotted puffballs that we learned were called Wool Sower Galls, which happen when tiny gall wasps lay their eggs in the seed pods, usually on white oaks. Just wow! 🥰

และท้ายที่สุดก็คือเจ้าก้อนปุกปุยสีขาวลายจุดแดงช่อนี้ ซึ่งไปค้นเจอมาว่าเป็นฝักของตัวต่อที่มาไข่ทิ้งเอาไว้ ส่วนใหญ่จะเจอได้ตามต้นโอ๊คขาว แหม น่ารักซะไม่มี 🥰

Daily walks nearby proved equally unfruitful in terms of mushroom spotting. 😞 But Spring has arrived in full force, as do our bunny friends! 🐰 This one pictured was staring straight at me from merely 5 feet away while I was stooping down scanning for mushrooms – giving me such a fright! 😅

อุตส่าห์คอยส่องหาเห็ดตามทางเวลาไปเดินออกกำลังใกล้ๆบ้าน แต่แถวนี้ก็แห้งแล้งไม่แพ้กัน 😞 ที่แน่ๆคือฤดูใบไม้ผลิมาเยือนแล้วแน่นอน เพราะเริ่มมีน้องกระต่ายป่า 🐰 โผล่มาให้เห็นตามทาง เจ้าตัวในรูปนี้นั่งจ้องเราอยู่แบบไม่ให้สุ้มให้เสียง ไอ้เราก็นั่งคุดคู้ลงไปส่องเห็ดอยู่ไม่ทันเห็นแก หันมาทีตกกะใจหมด มาเผชิญหน้ากันแบบกระชั้นชิดขนาดนี้ ไม่รู้ใครทำใครตกใจกันแน่ 😅

We ended up cooking ourselves this yummie morel risotto, with the morels foraged from the wild, wild Amazon jungles for now! 🤣

สุดท้ายแล้วเลยได้อาหารเย็นเป็น รีซอตโตเห็ดจานอร่อยที่เห็นในภาพ ด้วยเห็ดมอเรลที่ไปเก็บมาได้จากป่าอเมซอนที่บ้านเราเอง 🤣

Travel Diary: Troll Hunting in Danish Jungles

While racking our brains for a cool international trip idea this year, I happened to come across this interesting article about a Danish artist who builds trolls and hides them in the woods all around the world. Thomas Dambo wanted to encourage people to get out and enjoy nature. He started off building bird houses with reclaimed materials back in 2010, and graduated to building trolls a few years later. To date, he has installed more than 120 troll sculptures in 17 countries. We have decided – Denmark, Thomas Dambo’s birthplace and home country, would be our honorary destination this year! 🤠

หลังจากที่หารือกันอยู่นานว่าปีนี้จะไปเที่ยวต่างประเทศที่ไหนกันดี ก็เผอิญไปอ่านเจอบทความที่มีคนเขียนไว้เกี่ยวกับศิลปินชาวเดนมาร์กชื่อ โทมัส แดมโบ ที่มีชื่อเสียงโด่งดังจากการสร้างผลงานประติมากรรมเป็นยักษ์ใหญ่ซ่อนไว้ตามสถานที่ต่างๆทั่วโลก คุณแดมโบบอกว่าแกมีแรงบันดาลใจมาจากการที่อยากให้คนได้ออกไปสัมผัสกับธรรมชาตินอกบ้าน โดยเริ่มต้นตั้งแต่ปีค.ศ. 2010 แกเริ่มลองสร้างบ้านนกจากวัสดุเหลือใช้แล้วเอาไปแขวนไว้ตามที่ต่างๆทั่วเมือง จากนั้นจึงค่อยๆเกิดเป็นไอเดียมาประยุกต์สร้างเป็นยักษ์ใหญ่ใจดีเหล่านี้แทน จนถึงปัจจุบันมียักษ์ที่สร้างเสร็จแล้วจำนวนมากกว่า 120 ตน ตั้งอยู่กระจัดกระจายใน 17 ประเทศทั่วโลก สรุปเลยมีการลงมติเป็นเอกฉันท์ว่าปีนี้เราจะไปเยือนประเทศเดนมาร์ก บ้านเกิดคุณแดมโบนี่แหละ ไปตามล่าหายักษ์ใหญ่ใจดีกัน 🤠

During our 13-day excursion throughout this beautiful country, we hunted for and found a total of 18 trolls, all over Denmark. 😇 What I love most about these trolls is that each and every one of them has a unique feature you did not expect. 😍 It’s like finding treasures upon treasures in every destination. This was, by far, one of the most unique trips we have ever taken in our growing roster. 🤩

ไปขับรถเที่ยวตระเวนทั่วประเทศเดนมาร์กอยู่ 13 วัน หายักษ์เจอทั้งหมดรวมแล้ว 18 ตัว 😇 ที่ชอบใจมากก็คือ แต่ละตัวมีรายละเอียดที่โดดเด่นไม่ซ้ำกันเลย 😍 เหมือนไปตามล่าหาขุมทรัพย์แล้วได้รางวัลสมนาคุณแปลกใหม่ไม่จำเจซักครั้ง ทริปนี้เรียกได้ว่าเป็นทริปที่แหวกแนวกว่าทุกทริปที่เคยไปมาจริงๆ 🤩

We started off with our very first troll, Sigurd, The Bird & The Red Thing. He was located in the town of Mørke, which was about half an hour drive north of Aarhus, where we started our journey from.

เริ่มด้วยยักษ์ตัวแรกที่มีชื่อว่า Sigurd, The Bird & The Red Thing ตัวนี้ตั้งอยู่กลางทุ่งใหญ่ในเมือง Mørke ที่อยู่ห่างจากเมือง Aarhus ที่เราไปเริ่มทริปกันไปทางเหนือประมาณเกือบครึ่งชั่วโมงได้

Simon & Anine was one of the very few trolls we found that was located in an urban jungle, just on the outskirt of Aarhus. There is a lovely story behind this particular troll. 🥹 When the original Simon Selfmade Troll was destroyed in a big storm, a young girl named Anine raised the money to rebuild him, so in this new version, they portrayed Simon in the process of building his little friend Anine, as an homage to her. 😍

Simon & Anine ตัวนี้แปลกกว่าตัวอื่นๆตรงที่ว่าตั้งอยู่กลางป่าคอนกรีตย่านชานเมือง Aarhus นี่เอง เค้ามีที่มาเบื้องหลังการถ่ายทำอยู่ว่า แต่เดิมเป็นคุณยักษ์ชื่อ Simon Selfmade ที่สร้างขึ้นมาไม่นานก็โดนพายุทำพัง แต่ไปได้เด็กหญิงตัวน้อยชื่อ Anine ที่อุตส่าห์ไปวิ่งรอกตระเวนระดมทุนมาเพื่อเป็นค่าบูรณะ Simon ตกลงคุณแดมโบเลยได้อาสาสมัครมาช่วยกันซ่อมแซมส่วนที่เสียหาย ด้วยความที่ซึ้งในน้ำใจน้อง Anine คุณแดมโบเลยเพิ่มโบนัสไว้บนตักเจ้า Simon ให้เห็นว่ากำลังสร้างยักษ์น้อยๆมาอยู่เป็นเพื่อนบนตัก แล้วตั้งชื่อให้ใหม่ว่า Simon & Anine 😍

Elles Helle was in a field near a school in Viborg.

Ene Øjesten sits in an idyllic cow pasture, guarding a mill stone, right between 2 old water mills in Børkop.

Hans Hulehånd was a really cool one. He’s hidden in the tiny wooded area near Den Gemle Kanal in Odense, working on building a little house. The roof featured flattened out tin can products! 🤯

Finding Runde Rie required quite a trek 😓, then a bit of a scramble to get down to her exact location. She sits there with a fishing rod on the edge of one of the lakes near Lynghøjsøernes Hundeskov in Roskilde.

Runde Rie ตัวนี้ต้องใช้ความพยายามเล็กหน่อย 😓 จอดรถที่สวนสุนัข Lynghøjsøernes ในเมือง Roskilde แล้วต้องเดินอยู่ไกลโข ไปถึงแล้วยังต้องตะกายหินลงไปที่ริมทะเลสาบ กว่าจะไปถึงตรงที่แกนั่งตกปลาอยู่

For Glade Anders, we parked at the lot for Hedeland Naturpark in Hedehusene, and followed the trail for about 1 km. We were in a bit of a hurry as the sun was beginning to set by the time we walked out and we still had one more troll to check out that day. Sadly, I just learned after we got back from our trip, that his mother, Månemor, Thomas Dambo’s elusive 100th troll, could be found not too far from him. So we did miss one this time. 😭 But, that just gives us an excuse to be back! 😉

สำหรับ Glade Anders ตัวนี้ เราไปจอดรถที่ Hedeland Naturpark ในเมือง Hedehusene แล้วต้องเดินต่อไปอีกประมาณ 1 กิโล วันนั้นเดินจ้ำกันมากเพราะพระอาทิตย์ใกล้จะตก กว่าจะเดินกลับออกมาที่รถก็ใกล้ค่ำเต็มที มารู้ทีหลังว่าถ้าเดินต่อไปอีกนิดก็จะได้เจอ Månemor ซึ่งเป็นแม่ของเจ้า Glade Anders และเป็นยักษ์ตัวพิเศษเบอร์ 100 ของคุณแดมโบที่เค้าว่ากันว่าหายากนักหนา เสียดายที่ไม่รู้ 😭 สงสัยจะต้องกลับไปเดนมาร์กกันใหม่อีกรอบ 😉

We found our last troll of the day, Teddy Venlig, or Friendly Teddy, with very little daylight to spare. 😅 He’s actually one of the Six Forgotten Giants series, which we planned to tackle just the day after. Thomas Dambo named this one after a very friendly teacher who helped him build the troll. Teddy sits by a tiny stream, which you can cross by climbing on his extended right arm! 😆

ยักษ์ใหญ่ใจดีตัวสุดท้ายที่เจอวันนั้นคือ Teddy Venlig หรือ Friendly Teddy กว่าจะไปถึงก็เกือบมืดแล้ว 😅 คุณ Teddy เป็นหนึ่งในจำนวนซีรี่ส์หกสหายยักษ์ที่ถูกลืม ที่เราตั้งใจไปกวาดชมกันวันถัดไป คุณแดมโบตั้งชื่อยักษ์ตัวนี้ตามคุณครูแสนดีคนนึงที่อาสามาช่วยสร้างยักษ์ Teddy นั่งเล่นอยู่ริมฝั่งลำธารเล็กๆ ถ้าอยากเดินข้ามน้ำไปทักทายก็สามารถปีนข้ามแขนขวาแกที่ยื่นข้ามมาเป็นสะพานสำหรับมนุษย์ตัวจิ๋วอย่างเราๆ 😆

Hanna Halerød in Lillerød has a very long tail. 😅 Her tail, measured at 125 meter, stretches on and on, looping around tree trunks, hopping over fallen logs, and finally leading you to a cozy picnic spot in the woods.

Hanna Halerød เป็นนางยักษ์หางยาวประจำเมือง Lillerød 😅 หางนางยาวมากกกกกก วัดได้อยู่ที่ 125 เมตร เราเดินตามหางที่เลี้ยวลดขดเคี้ยวตามต้นไม้ไปเรื่อยๆเข้าไปในป่า จนสุดท้ายไปจบที่ศาลาเล็กๆสำหรับแวะปิคนิค หรือให้หยุดนั่งพักเหนื่อย 😆

We started off our first day in Copenhagen with Kaptajn Nalle, who was located in a large open field in a fenced-in area near Nordhavnen harbor. Getting to him was a bit tricky. We drove all the way around and couldn’t find a way in. We were getting ready to give up when I finally spotted a gate with a sign for a cafe. Sadly, both the troll and his boat were covered with a bunch of graffitis. 😢

Kaptajn Nalle เป็นยักษ์ตัวแรกที่เราไปเจอ หลังจากเข้าพักที่เมืองโคเปนเฮเกน ซึ่งเป็นจุดหมายปลายทางของทริปนี้ ยักษ์ตัวนี้ตั้งอยู่กลางทุ่งกว้างใกล้กับท่าเรือ Nordhavnen ขับรถไปถึงเห็นแกอยู่ไกลๆ แต่หาทางเข้าไปดูใกล้ๆไม่เจอ เพราะมีรั้วลวดหนามกั้นอยู่โดยรอบ วนไปวนมาจนเกือบจะยอมแพ้ แต่สุดท้ายตาดีไปเจอประตูรั้วแง้มอยู่ พร้อมป้ายเล็กๆโฆษณาว่ามีร้านกาแฟอยู่ข้างใน เลยสามารถเข้าไปถึงตัวแกได้ เสียดายมีมือดีไปพ่นสีไว้เต็มไปหมดทั้งตัวยักษ์และตัวเรือที่แกลากอยู่ 😢

Sleeping Louis was our second troll from the Six Forgotten Giants set, named after Thomas Dambo’s assistant who helped finish up the construction. His snoring mouth was big enough for me to peek in and explore the little room inside! 😊

Hill Top Trine, third in the Six Forgotten Giants series, was resting on a small hill surrounded by charming farmlands. You can climb up and sit in her hand to enjoy the beautiful landscape. 🥰

Hill Top Trine เป็นยักษ์ตัวที่สามจากชุดหกสหายยักษ์ที่ถูกลืม นางนั่งเอนหลังชมวิวอยู่บนเนินเขาที่ลอบล้อมไปด้วยฟาร์มปศุสัตว์เขียวขจี คุณสามารถปีนขึ้นไปนั่งชมวิวสวยๆที่นี่ได้บนมือข้างซ้าย ซึ่งรับบทเป็นเก้าอี้จำเป็น 🥰

Oscar Under the Bridge was literally, as his name suggested, the classic troll under the bridge! 😆 He was the fourth troll of the Six Forgotten Giants.

Little Tilde and Thomas on the Mountain were our last two Six Forgotten Giants trolls. They can be found in the beautiful nature area in Vallensbæk Mose. Little Tilde stood there peeking through the trees out at the lake, waiting for his visitors to visit via a hand-pulled raft that connects to the other side. Thomas On The Mountain was chilling on the mountain top right across the lake. The raft was on the other side when we got to Little Tilde 😐, so we had to hike through a sheep & goat pasture to get to Thomas. But we did take the raft on our way back. 🥰

Little Tilde กับ Thomas on the Mountain เป็นยักษ์สองตัวสุดท้ายจากซีรี่ส์หกสหายยักษ์ที่ถูกลืม ทั้งสองตั้งอยู่ที่สวนป่า Vallensbæk Mose คุณยักษ์ Little Tilde ยืนแอบอยู่ในป่าคอยชะเง้อดูว่ามีใครแวะมาเยี่ยมแกบ้าง ที่ริมฝั่งทะเลสาบใกล้กันมีแพเล็กๆแบบใช้แรงมือดึงเอาให้ใช้ข้ามไปอีกฝั่งได้ แต่ตอนเราไปถึงแพดันไปอยู่ฝั่งกระโน้น 😐 เลยต้องเดินอ้อมผ่านทุ่งหญ้าเลี้ยงแพะกับแกะไปหาคุณยักษ์ Thomas ที่นอนแอ้งแม้งอยู่บนเขากันแทน แต่ขากลับใช้แพกลับเอาได้ ไม่ต้องเดินกลับ 🥰

Last but not least, this one was such a happy surprise and the only one we found that we did not plan for! 😆 We just ran into Green George unexpectedly while strolling around in Freetown Christiania.

And there concludes our troll hunting adventure in Denmark, for now. 😉 We do intend to continue hunting trolls both locally, here in the US, and in other countries around the world, as time and opportunities will allow. 🥰

Continuing Our Mushroom Journey…

After finding a morel, chicken of the woods, and reishis in recent months, we were psyched 😊 to continue our mushroom hunting journey in the area at different wooded locations nearby. As a rule of thumb, we always try to get out soon after a good stretch of rain, to maximize our chance of good finds.

ตั้งแต่ที่ไปเจอเห็ดมอเรล เห็ดไก่ป่า และเห็ดหลินจือกันมา เลยเกิดความมุมานะไปตามล่าหาเห็ดกันเป็นกิจวัตร 😊 เราเที่ยวตระเวนเข้าป่าทุกครั้งที่มีโอกาส โดยเฉพาะช่วงหลังฝนตกใหม่ๆ เป็นช่วงที่บรรยากาศเอื้ออำนวยกับการที่เห็ดจะผุดโผล่ขึ้นมาให้ได้ชมกันยิ่งนัก

During our quick trip to Wilmington back at the end of July, we found a good flush of reishis at Piney Ridge Nature Preserve.

เมื่อปลายเดือนกรกฎาเราแวะไปนอนเล่นที่เมือง Wilmington กัน ไปเจอเห็ดหลินจือสวยๆขึ้นอยู่เต็มที่ Piney Ridge Nature Preserve

Then, in early September, we ventured out to beautiful Eno River and found mostly turkey tails, but also a good chunk of honey mushrooms at the very end. Plus a bonus – a cool looking skink that I first thought was a snake! 😆

ต้นเดือนกันยา พอมีวันที่แดดไม่แผดเผามากนัก เลยได้แว่บไปเดินป่ากันที่ Eno River ไปเจอเห็ดหางไก่งวงซะเป็นส่วนใหญ่ แต่ก็ยังมีเห็ดน้ำผึ้งกอใหญ่ให้ได้เห็นก่อนกลับ แถมด้วยเจ้าจิ้งเหลนลายสวยที่ตอนแรกมองผาดๆนึกว่าเป็นงู 😆

In early October, when the weather started to cool down somewhat, we went to Hemlock Bluff Nature Preserve for a short hike, and found some pretty cool mushrooms there. 😍

ต้นเดือนตุลา หลังพายุลูกใหญ่เข้าแล้วอากาศที่นี่เย็นลงบ้าง เราไปส่องเห็ดกันที่ Hemlock Bluff Nature Preserve ได้เจอเห็ดแปลกๆอยู่หลายอย่าง 😍

The highlights of that day was this very photogenic Shaggy Stalked Bolete and a big flush of Ringless Honey. 😍

ไฮไลท์วันนั้นเห็นจะเป็นเห็ดผึ้งขาลายหมวกส้มสีสวยดอกนี้แหละ โผล่มาข้างตอไม้ล่อให้เข้าไปถ่ายรูปมาก เห็ดน้ำผึ้งตอเบ้อเร่อนี่ถ่ายรูปออกมาแล้วก็ดูดีเช่นกัน 😍

Saving the best for (next to) last 😇, we went back out to Lake Johnson Park yet again just last week, and hit another jackpot! Lion’s Mane! 🤩

อุตส่าห์กั๊กขุมทรัพย์ชิ้นใหญ่ไว้เกือบท้ายที่สุด 😇 เมื่ออาทิตย์ก่อนบังเอิญอากาศดี แต่กว่าจะว่างก็ปาเข้าไปเกือบเย็นแล้ว เลยต้องเลือกไปใกล้ๆบ้านที่ Lake Johnson Park เลยโชคดีได้ไปเจอเห็ดหัวลิงดอกสวยดอกนี้ 🤩

Here are some other cool finds from Lake Johnson, albeit a lot less interesting compared to the Lion’s Mane. 😆

นอกจากนั้นยังมีอีกหลากหลายเห็ดที่ไปเจอวันนั้น แต่ไม่มีอันไหนสู้เห็ดหัวลิงได้ 😆

And lastly, because someone posted a tip on Lion’s Mane spotting at Inspiration Trail at Umstead Park, we felt like we had to go check it out 😛. Unfortunately, there was no Lion’s Mane in sight 🙄, but we did manage to find some other cool species.

สุดท้ายเมื่อไม่กี่วันก่อน เกิดไปอ่านเจอมีคนมาโพสต์ว่าไปเจอเห็ดหัวลิงที่เส้น Inspiration Trail ใน Umstead Park เลยอดไม่ได้ต้องไปลองเช็คดู 😛 แต่เดินหาอยู่นานก็ไม่เห็นเจอ 🙄 ถึงอย่างนั้นก็ยังมีเห็ดแปลกๆให้เห็นอยู่หลายอย่าง

Mushroom Hike: Holy CoW at Jordan Lake

Disclaimer: I started writing this post back in July and only had time to finish it up just now, 3 months later. 😆 So, the timeline mentioned is a bit off, just FYI.

หมายเหตุ: โพสต์นี้เริ่มไว้ตั้งแต่เมื่อเดือนกรกฎา แต่เพิ่งจะมามีเวลาเขียนให้เสร็จเอาวันนี้เอง 😆

During our recent hike at Lake Johnson, we ran into a fellow hiker lady who was out with her dog, Claire. Seeing me stooping down to take pictures of mushrooms, she kindly tipped us off that there was a huge mushroom scene going on at Jordan Lake that she spotted very recently. I excitedly checked the weather app, and determined that there would be another potential cooler break on Monday, when we could possibly squeeze in a hike with minimal chance of me getting a heat stroke. 🥵

วันที่ไปเดินป่ากันที่ Lake Johnson ตอนที่กำลังก้มๆเงยๆถ่ายรูปเห็ดอยู่ เผอิญมีป้าใจดีพาน้องหมามาเดินเหมือนกัน เห็นเราชอบเห็ด เลยอุตส่าห์เดินมาทักทาย แล้วแอบกระซิบว่าแกเพิ่งไปเดินที่ Jordan Lake มา ที่โน่นมีเห็ดอยู่ตรึม เราเลยเกิดอาการอยากรู้อยากเห็นขึ้นมาอย่างเสียไม่ได้ เช็คพยากรณ์อากาศแล้วเห็นว่าวันจันทร์ที่กำลังจะมาถึงอากาศจะเย็นขึ้นเล็กน้อย สามารถหนีงานไปเที่ยวเล่นกันได้โดยที่ไม่ต้องกลัวเป็นลมแดด 🥵

So, come Monday, we took off early from work, and headed to Jordan Lake for our next mushroom adventure! 🍄 The lady specifically pinpointed that it was the trail off of Pea Ridge Road, with the boat ramp. We quickly determined that she meant the New Hope Trail, which we are very familiar with.

พอวันจันทร์เลยรีบสะสางงานให้เสร็จตอนบ่ายแก่ๆ แล้วจึงออกเดินทางไปตามล่าหาเห็ด 🍄 กันที่ Jordan Lake อย่างที่ตั้งใจไว้ คุณป้าบอกทางให้แบบละเอียดลออ สั่งว่าต้องไปเส้นที่อยู่บนถนน Pea Ridge ใกล้ๆกับท่าเรือ เช็คแผนที่ดูแล้วถึงเห็นว่าเป็นเส้นทางเดินป่า New Hope Trail ที่เราไปเดินกันอยู่บ่อยๆนั่นเอง

The first half of the hike went by with little fanfare. Most of the mushrooms we spotted were quite boring, to say the least… 😒

เดินไปเกือบครึ่งทางยังไม่เจอเห็ดเริ่ดๆอย่างที่ป้าแกคุยไว้ซักดอก เจออยู่แค่เห็ดบ้านๆที่เห็นได้ทั่วไป เลยเริ่มเกิดอาการท้อเล็กน้อย 😒

Then things started to pick up. 😇 We began to see more interesting varieties popping up left and right. 😍

แต่เดินไปอีกหน่อยแคตตาล็อกเห็ดก็เริ่มจะมีสีสันขึ้น 😇 ชักมีเห็ดแปลกๆขึ้นมาให้เห็นรอบทาง เลยค่อยมีกำลังใจเดินต่อ 😍

Until we hit the beauty that we originally thought was a Reishi, but after a more thorough research, I believe it was actually a Resinous polypore – a common Reishi lookalike! 🙄

จนกระทั่งมาเจอเห็ดลายสวยดอกนี้ ตอนแรกดูเผินๆนึกว่าเป็นหลินจือ แต่พอมาหาข้อมูลดูอีกทีแล้วเข้าใจว่าน่าจะเป็นเห็ดหิ้งซะมากกว่า 🙄

Just when we started to see pretty views of the lake. 🥰

อยู่ตรงช่วงที่มีวิวทะเลสาบสวยๆให้เห็นพอดี 🥰

And then came the highlight of the day – Chicken of the Woods!!! 😱 I still can’t believe we actually found it. 🤯 After seeing numerous pictures of this on the Facebook NC Mushroom Group, I know how highly sought-after this particular species is, and finding one has been my ultimate goal for mushroom hunting. Now I can cross that off my list! 🥳

และแล้วคุณสามีก็ไปเจอแจ๊คพอตเป็นเห็ดไก่ป่าดอกโตที่เห็นในรูป 😱 หลังจากที่เห็นรูปที่เค้าเอามาโพสต์อวดกันในเพจชมรมคนรักเห็ดในเฟซบุ๊กประจำรัฐนอร์ทแคโรไลน่ามาเป็นเดือน ไม่เคยคิดว่าตัวเองจะมาเจอของจริงกับตาจังๆอย่างนี้ 🤯 ความฝันเป็นจริงก็วันนี้เอง 🥳

The rest of the hike went by in a daze. We did see some more mushrooms along the way, but none as impressive as the CoW and the Reishi lookalike! 😆

หลังจากถูกล๊อตเตอรี่รางวัลที่หนึ่ง เราก็เดินกันต่ออย่างงงๆเล็กน้อย ไปเจอเห็ดเล็กเห็ดน้อยตามทาง แต่ก็ไม่มีอะไรน่าประทับใจเท่าเห็ดไก่ป่ากับเห็ดฝาแฝดหลินจืออีก 😆

We clocked in at 2.98 miles, which took us 1 hour and 39 minutes. This will go on the record in our mushroom adventure book as our latest and greatest treasure trove of all time. For now, at least! 😉

วันนั้นเดินกันไปสิริรวมแล้วเกือบ 3 ไมล์หรือประมาณ 4 กิโลกว่าๆเกือบ 5 กิโลได้ ใช้เวลาไม่ถึงสองชั่วโมงดี อากาศร้อนตับแตกแต่ก็คุ้มแสนคุ้ม เลยจำเป็นต้องมาจารึกไว้เป็นหลักฐาน เป็นอีกประสบการณ์ที่จำได้ไม่มีวันลืมแน่นอน 😉

Mushroom Hike: Lake Johnson Edition

Inspired by our recent success in our own neighborhood 😇, this past Saturday, we ventured out a little further to Lake Johnson Nature Park, when we happened to get a short break from the relentless heat wave 🥵 that has been pounding this area, and most of the country, for weeks. We opted to go on the shorter trail on the West side, where it was a bit more wooded, in order to increase our chance of mushroom finds.

ตั้งแต่ที่ประสบความสำเร็จจากการไปส่องเจอเห็ดใกล้ละแวกบ้านกันมา 😇 ก็ตั้งใจอยากจะลองออกไปตระเวนหาดูในทำเลป่าจริงจังดูบ้าง ติดอยู่ก็ตรงที่ว่าหลายอาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมา อากาศร้อนระอุ 🥵 จนไม่สามารถออกไปทำกิจกรรมนอกบ้านกันได้ ไม่ใช่แค่ที่บ้านเรา แต่เป็นไปกันเกือบทั้งประเทศ โชคดีบ่ายวันเสาร์ที่ผ่านมาพระอาทิตย์หลบไปพักร้อน เราเลยได้โอกาสรีบแวบไปออกสำรวจที่ Lake Johnson Nature Park กัน เราเลือกทางเส้นสั้นทางด้านทิศตะวันตก เพราะดูทำเลแล้วมีไม้ป่าหนาทึบกว่าอีกด้าน น่าจะเอื้อแก่การหาเห็ดได้มากกว่า

And boy, mushrooms did we find! 🤩 Most of these were different from what we spotted near our house. The variety was just as impressive, if not even more so than what we saw the last time, which made sense from the considerably longer distance we covered. Since we were actually in the woods, we did spot quite a few of them that were growing from trees.

และแล้วก็เจอเห็ดสมใจอยาก 🤩 รอบนี้ดูจะเจอพันธุ์เห็ดที่แตกต่างไปจากคราวก่อน มีความหลากหลายขึ้นไปอีกเป็นเท่าตัว ซึ่งก็สมควรอยู่ เพราะระยะทางยาวกว่า แถมคราวนี้เป็นป่า เลยได้เจอเห็ดขึ้นตามต้นไม้อยู่หลายชนิด

One broken eggshell left on top of a tree trunk. We weren’t sure which bird it belonged to, but it was pretty big – about the size of my fist! 😳

นอกจากนี้ยังไปเจอเปลือกไข่นกอะไรไม่รู้อยู่บนตอไม้ น่าจะเป็นนกใหญ่พอสมควร เพราะไข่มันขนาดเกือบเท่าฝ่ามือเลยทีเดียว 😳

บรรยากาศครึ้มฟ้าครึ้มฝนบนทะเลสาบบ่ายวันเสาร์ตอนกำลังจะขึ้นรถกลับบ้าน 😍

We clocked in at 2.45 miles, which took us a little under an hour and a half, about half of which were spent venturing into wooded areas to get pictures of hidden mushrooms. 😊

วันนั้นเดินกันไป 2.45 ไมล์ หรือประมาณ 4 กิโลพอดีๆ ใช้เวลาทั้งสิ้นเกือบชั่วโมงครึ่ง เพราะมัวแต่ไปบุกป่าฝ่าดงถ่ายรูปเห็ดกัน 😊

Mushroom Walk: Neighborhood Edition

Based on recent inspiration from the Facebook NC Mushroom Group posts, where people brag about their awesome foraging finds, we set out on a short walk around our neighborhood on a cloudy Sunday earlier this month. After several rainy days, we were hoping for the best, but not really expecting to find much in the urban area where we were. To our amazement, not only did we find some, the variety of fungi species we managed to spot were beyond our wildest dreams! 😳
พักนี้สมาชิกชมรมคนรักเห็ดขยันมาโพสกันอยู่เรื่อยว่าไปเจอเห็ดนั้นนี้กัน เลยเกิดแรงบันดาลใจต้องไปลองส่องเห็ดดูบ้าง เผอิญสองอาทิตย์ก่อนได้จังหวะเหมาะช่วงอากาศกำลังครึ้มฟ้าครึ้มฝนเลยไปเดินดูแถวใกล้ๆบ้าน เห็นว่าฝนตกติดต่อกันมาหลายวัน อาจจะมีมาให้เห็นบ้าง แต่ก็ไม่ได้คิดว่าจะเจออะไรมากมาย ตอนแรกนึกว่าจะเจอซักดอกสองดอก แต่ปรากฎว่ายิ่งหายิ่งเจอ ดอกแล้วดอกเล่า แถมไม่ใช่แบบซ้ำๆกันซะด้วย 😳

Without further ado, we hereby proudly present you with our colorful display of mushroom treasures we discovered that day. 😇 I am not going to pretend to be a mushroom expert and name any names for these. 🥸 We did look them up but identifications were mostly inconclusive, to say the least… 😐

และนี่ก็คืออัลบั้มเห็ดนานาพันธุ์ที่เก็บภาพมาได้จากวันนั้น หลากสีหลายขนาด 😇 แต่ไม่สามารถฟันธงบอกได้ว่ามีชนิดไหนบ้างเพราะเราไม่ใช่ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านการเห็ด 🥸 พยายามไปลองศึกษาดูแล้วแต่ก็ไม่สามารถจริงๆ 😐

อันนี้ตอนแรกเห็นไกลๆนึกว่าเห็ด แต่ไปดูใกล้ๆปรากฎว่าไม่ใช่ 😅

All of these were spotted within a span of just under 45 minutes, where we covered a total distance of 1.71 miles. The route we took was the same one we have been doing our (mostly, when we can) daily walks on, dozens, maybe hundreds of times, but never have had any such sightings before! 😊

ทั้งหมดที่เห็นมานี้ไปเจอภายในช่วงเวลาแค่ไม่ถึง 45 นาที ครอบคลุมระยะทางรวมแล้ว 1.71 ไมล์ หรือประมาณไม่ถึง 3 กิโลดี เส้นที่เดินคือเส้นประจำที่ไปเดินกันอยู่บ่อยๆ เดินมาเป็นร้อยครั้งน่าจะได้ แต่ไม่เคยเจอเห็ดยุ่บยั่บขนาดนี้มาก่อน 😊

Sunday Hike: My First Morel!

It’s no secret that I am quite a mushroom aficionado. ☺️ Ever since we started subscribing to the Facebook NC Mushroom Group, I’ve been fascinated to learn about the abundant fungi scene right here under our noses, in the great state of North Carolina!

ไม่ต้องบอกก็คงรู้กันอยู่ว่าเจ้าของบล๊อครายนี้เป็นคนรักเห็ด ☺️ ตั้งแต่ที่ได้สมัครเป็นสมาชิกชมรมคนรักเห็ดในเฟซบุ๊กประจำรัฐนอร์ทแคโรไลน่าเมื่อหลายเดือนก่อน เพิ่งจะรู้ว่าแถวรัฐเราที่เราอยู่นี่มีเห็ดขึ้นอยู่อย่างชุกชุม

Inspired by several posts I saw on the board back in March & April, of people finding the highly sought-after morel mushroom, I decided we should go give it a try out there ourselves! 😆 With a guidance from a good friend of Joel, who has years of experience in morel hunting in the area, he kindly took us to a ‘potential spot’ not far from our house.

หลังจากเห็นสมาชิกหลายท่านมาโพสอวดกันว่าไปเจอเห็ดมอเรลที่หายากนักหนาอยู่ในป่าแถวนี้ เราเลยต้องออกไปตามล่าหาดูบ้าง 😆 เผอิญคุณสามีมีเพื่อนมากด้วยประสบการณ์ที่ใจดีอุตส่าห์มาเป็นไกด์ พี่แกพาไปหาในจุดลับเฉพาะที่แกเคยไปเจอมาเมื่อหลายปีก่อน

We set out on a sunny afternoon in April, and as luck would have it, I found my very first morel 15 minutes in! 😳 Unfortunately, it was the only find of the day. 😅 We gave up after about an hour and a half or so of intensive hunting. 🤣

นัดไปเจอกันช่วงเย็นวันอาทิตย์กลางเดือนเมษา ปรากฎว่าฤกษ์ดีหรืออย่างไรไม่ทราบ เดินไปซัก 15 นาทีได้ ข้าพเจ้าไปเจอแจ๊คพอตเข้าอย่างจังๆอย่างที่เห็น 😳 ตะโกนเรียกอาจารย์มาดูด้วยความตื่นเต้น แกคอนเฟิร์มว่าใช่จริง ดีใจกันใหญ่ เก็บมาแล้วตั้งหน้าเดินหากันต่อด้วยความคึกคัก แต่เดินอีกเป็นชั่วโมงก็ไม่เจออีกเลย 🤣

Nevertheless, we had a great time, and learned quite a lot that day. We were told that the easiest way to spot a morel, is to find rotting wood near a tulip poplar tree. By the end of the day, I became an expert in spotting tulip poplars, which was quite easy, thanks to its uniquely shaped leaves and very distinguishable flowers. 😎 The spot I found mine was right next to the edge of a body of water, which is another clue to finding one.

ถึงจะเจอเห็ดมอเรลอยู่แค่ดอกเดียว แต่วันนั้นก็ได้ประสบการณ์ดีๆจากผู้รู้มาหลายอย่าง เคล็ดลับอย่างแรกคือเห็ดจำพวกนี้ชอบขึ้นอยู่ตามตอไม้ผุๆพังๆใกล้ๆต้นไม้ที่มีชื่อว่า tulip poplar ซึ่งสังเกตได้ไม่ยาก เพราะใบมันเป็นแฉกแปลกตาไม่เหมือนใบไม้อื่นๆ แถมดอกไม้ของเค้าก็ดูง่าย เป็นสีเขียวสลับเหลืองจางๆ และมีวงสีส้มอยู่รอบๆเกสร เคล็ดลับอีกอย่างก็คือให้สังเกตตามริมน้ำ ซึ่งตรงตามกับที่เราไปเจอมา

Even though we didn’t end up finding any more morels, we had a great time exploring the woods. Wild lilies happened to be in their peak blooms. 😍

We covered only 3/4 of a mile during our 1.5 hour hunt. Sticking to the unspoken community wide morel code 🙄, I will not disclose the exact location of this particular hike 🤐, as we hope to get back and find some more next year! 😉

วันนั้นเราครอบคลุมระยะทางรวมเบ็ดเสร็จแล้วแค่ไม่ถึงไมล์ดี แต่ใช้เวลางมไปร่วมชั่วโมงครึ่งได้ งวดนี้ขออนุญาติไม่แชร์ว่าไปเดินป่ากันที่ไหน 🙄 เพราะคนที่ไปเจอเห็ดโมเรลเค้าสอนมาว่าต้องเก็บโลเคชั่นไว้เป็นความลับ 🤐 คนอื่นจะได้ไม่มาแย่งเราเก็บที่ทำเลนี้ในปีต่อๆไป 😉

Sunday Hike: No Crowd at Crowder District Park

Crowder County Park is a small park located near the Cary-Apex border. We checked this out one late Sunday afternoon and were happy to see a relatively light traffic there.

Crowder County Park ตั้งอยู่ระหว่างเมือง Cary และเมือง Apex เราไปเยี่ยมเยือน park เล็กๆแห่งนี้ตอนบ่ายแก่ๆวันอาทิตย์ ไปถึงที่นั่นทางโล่งกำลังดีไม่ค่อยมีคนเท่าไหร่

There is a very cool looking playground area at the entrance that was packed full of families with small kids when we arrived. We checked this out on our way out, when the crowd has pretty much all cleared out. Not only was it equipped with elaborate play stations, this spacious children’s area also featured impressive musical instrument fixtures. No wonder this is a popular play destination! 😆

ติดกันกับลานจอดรถเป็นสนามเด็กเล่น เดินผ่านตอนแรกเห็นมีลูกเล็กเด็กแดงปีนป่ายกันยั้วเยี้ย เลยรอตอนก่อนกลับถึงค่อยเข้าไปสำรวจ ไปดูแล้วถึงได้เข้าใจว่าทำไมเด็กๆถึงชอบกัน เครื่องเล่นที่นี่เค้าทำเป็นธีมเครื่องดนตรี ขนาดเด็กโข่งยังเล่นจนเพลิน 😆

The trails itself, though short in distance, were very nicely paved and well-maintained.

ทางเดินที่นี่ราดยางอย่างดี สะอาดเอี่ยม แถมมีทุกอย่างคอยให้บริการพร้อมสรรพ

We first started off with Cooper’s Hawk Trail, a 0.2-mile interpretive nature trail that starts and ends on the main Outer Loop Trail. This part is mulched and has yellow blazes along the way. There is an amphitheater located near the northern end.

เราไปเริ่มกันที่เส้น Cooper’s Hawk ซึ่งเป็นเส้นทางธรรมชาติมีป้ายกำกับคอยบอกชื่อต้นไม้ตามทาง เส้นนี้เป็นตัวยู เชื่อมกับทางเส้นหลัก แต่ต่างกันตรงที่ช่วงนี้โรยด้วยเปลือกไม้ ระยะทางสั้นๆแค่ 0.2 ไมล์ หรือประมาณ 300 เมตรเท่านั้น และมีหมุดปักบอกทางเป็นสีเหลือง ใกล้กับทางเข้าด้านเหนือเป็นลานแสดงกลางแจ้งเล็กๆพร้อมม้านั่งทำด้วยไม้แบบเรียบง่าย

The inner Pond Loop Trail features an observation deck, a boardwalk, 2 picnic areas, 2 different shelters, and another 2 smaller playgrounds.

เส้น Pond Loop ด้านในมีท่าชมวิวเล็กๆ ทางเดินไม้ตัดข้ามสระน้ำ พร้อมทั้งยังมีที่ปิคนิคทั้งกลางแจ้งและในร่ม รวมไปถึงสนามเด็กเล่นเล็กๆอีกสองแห่งด้วยกัน

The Outer Loop Trail goes around the perimeter of the park. There is a dedicated bird garden with multiple feeders. For the record, we did see some birds hanging there enjoying themselves, before they felt the need to fly off when 2 strange humans came and intruded on their space… 😛

เส้นทางวงแหวนสายหลักของที่นี่พาเราเดินรอบขอบอาณาบริเวณของ park ทางด้านใต้ใกล้กับลานจอดรถเป็นสวนนกเล็กๆ มีเครื่องให้อาหาร และบ้านนกหลากสีหลายขนาด ต้องขอสารภาพว่าตอนเดินเข้าไปเห็นมีนกสองตัวกำลังสังสรรค์กันอยู่ เห็นคนมาตกใจเลยบินหนีไปซะงั้น ต้องขออภัยที่มาล่วงล้ำความเป็นส่วนตัวโดยมิได้ตั้งใจ 😛

One very cool factor of this particular park are these pet waste bag stations that are located throughout the main path. Each was uniquely painted and dedicated to different canine friends of the park.

All in all, our hike that day ended up being more like a nice stroll in the park, but we did thoroughly enjoy it nonetheless! 😆 We clocked in at a measly 1.69 miles in total distance, which took us just a little shy of an hour, mainly because we were checking out all the cool stuff they had there. 😊

Sunday Hike: Multi-Loop Hike at Multi-Use Trails

We managed to find yet another new hiking spot! 😎 Bailey and Sarah Williamson Preserve is located on the far eastern side of Raleigh, about half an hour from us. This place has a large parking lot, but unfortunately, no restroom or any other facilities. 😕 There is one lone porta potty there though, in case of emergency! 😆

ยิ่งหาก็ยิ่งเจอ เพิ่งค้นพบว่าแถวนี้ยังมีที่เดินป่าใหม่ๆให้ไปลองอีกหลายแห่ง 😎 Bailey and Sarah Williamson Preserve ตั้งอยู่ทางตอนเหนือของเมือง Raleigh จากบ้านเราขับรถไปแค่ครึ่งชั่วโมงก็ถึง ที่นี่มีลานจอดรถใหญ่โต เสียก็แต่ว่าไม่มีห้องน้ำ 😕 แต่ถ้าอั้นไม่ไหวจริงๆเค้ามีสุขาเคลื่อนที่ไว้คอยให้บริการ 😆

Right next door is this picturesque Oaky Grove Methodist Church.

ติดกันเป็นโบสถ์ Oaky Grove Methodist Church

The trails here are interconnected loops, with the main parking lot located on Mial Plantation Road. We started off on Walnut Hill Way, which is a multi-use trail for both hikers and bikers (but bikers are not supposed to ride on this particular section).

เส้นทางเดินป่าที่นี่เป็นวงแหวนหลายวงเชื่อมต่อกัน เริ่มต้นจากลานจอดรถซึ่งตั้งอยู่บนถนน Mial Plantation Road เส้นแรกมีชื่อว่า Walnut Hill Way เป็นทางอเนกประสงค์ที่มีไว้สำหรับทั้งคนเดินเท้าและนักปั่นจักรยาน (แต่ช่วงสั้นๆนี้เค้าห้ามขี่จักรยาน ต้องจูงเอาจนไปถึงช่วงหน้าถึงจะเริ่มขี่ได้)

That led us right onto the next trail – Two-Pond Loop. This part is for hiking only. Blue blazes here along the way,

จากนั้นเราต่อไปยังเส้นที่สองซึ่งมีชื่อว่า Two-Pond Loop เส้นนี้สำหรับคนเดินเท้าโดยเฉพาะ ห้ามจักรยานเข้า ตามทางมีหมุดปักสีน้ำเงินคอยบอกทาง

First we passed by one pond.

ผ่านบ่อที่หนึ่งตามที่ชื่อเค้าบอกไว้

And then the other… There is a free library at the far end, right next to a bench overlooking the pond, where you can sit back and enjoy your literary selection… 😉

และตามด้วยบ่อที่สอง…ตามคำโฆษณา ที่สุดปลายทางมีห้องสมุดเคลื่อนที่ให้หยิบหนังสืออ่านได้ฟรีๆ แถมยังมีม้านั่งตั้งอยู่ริมน้ำให้พร้อมสรรพ เอาๆไว้นั่งอ่านหนังสือที่เลือกได้ตามอัธยาศัย 😉

After Two-Pond, we continued on to our third loop of the day – the Pine Warbler Trail. This section is again, a multi-use route. You can get here straight from Walnut Hill Way without taking the detour to Two-Pond like we did. It has black blazes along the way, and is in fact two loops connected together with a straight shot in between.

หลังจากเส้น Two-Pond เราเดินต่อไปยังวงแหวนเส้นที่สามคือ Pine Warbler Trail เส้นนี้เป็นทางอเนกประสงค์ที่สามารถตัดตรงมาจากเส้น Walnut Hill ได้โดยที่ไม่ต้องไปอ้อมผ่านเส้น Two-Pond อย่างที่เราไปกัน ตลอดทางมีหมุดปักสีดำ จริงๆแล้วเส้นนี้เป็นวงแหวนสองวงเชื่อมต่อกันด้วยทางตัดตรงช่วงกลาง

There is an attempt to regulate traffic on this part, since both hikers and bikers are allowed. My husband is not a big fan of this particular sign. 😆 It basically tries to tell bikers and runners to go one way on certain days of the week, while directing hikers to go the opposite way. I suppose their logic is, this way, faster-moving traffic can flow one way and has a better chance to see slower-moving traffic coming towards them. There seems to be multiple problems with this overly complicated system, in our opinion. 😐 First of all, the sign has multiple stick figure drawings that appear to confuse people rather than helping them. 😵 Second of all, it was not large enough for bikers to see, passing through with any kind of speed at all. And lastly, why add the extra difficulty of switching directions depending on the days of the week!? 😵‍💫 Needless to say, we were confused by the sign and went the wrong way at first, before finally being able to figure out what to do. 😓

เจ้าหน้าที่ที่นี่เค้าพยายามจัดระเบียบการใช้เส้นทางตรงช่วงนี้ เพราะมีทั้งคนเดินเท้าและนักปั่นจักรยานใช้ทางร่วมกัน คุณสามีเห็นป้ายแล้วส่ายหัว 😆 คือประมาณว่าเค้าจัดให้จักรยานกับนักวิ่งไปทางนึง ส่วนคนเดินเท้า (รวมไปถึงคนเดินจูงจักรยาน)ให้ไปอีกทางเป็นบางวัน แต่บางวันให้สลับกันไปอีกทาง คือเข้าใจได้ว่าการจราจรที่เร็วกว่าจะไปทางนึง จะได้เห็นการจราจรที่เดินช้าเวลาสวนมาจากอีกทาง แต่คือจำเป็นมั้ยที่ต้องบังคับการเดินทางกันแบบซับซ้อนขนาดนี้ 😐 ในรูปจะเห็นว่ามีรูปนักเดินทางหลากหลายมาก แทนที่จะช่วยกลับทำให้สับสนมากกว่าว่าเอ๊ะชั้นกลุ่มไหนแน่ 😵 แถมป้ายเค้าตัวหนังสือบอกวันเล็กขนาดนี้สิงห์ปั่นจักรยานมากันเร็วๆจะอ่านทันมั้ยนะ แล้วทำไมต้องสลับทิศแบบสลับวันกันให้ยิ่งงงขึ้นไปอีก 😵‍💫 สรุปว่าเห็นป้ายเดียวกันครั้งแรกเราอ่านแล้วไปทาง คุณสามีจะไปอีกทาง ตกลงกันแล้วปรากฎว่าไปผิดทางจนได้ จนมาศึกษากันอีกที่ถึงจะเข้าใจ 😓

From Pine Warbler, we continued on to our fourth and final loop of the day – Little Falls Loop. This was the longest stretch, at 2.3 miles round trip, and dotted with yellow blazes. Same traffic rules here. And if you’re wondering why there is no picture of a falls, it was because we didn’t see any! 😆 Not sure if it’s a dry season, or if this is some sort of false advertisement… 🤨

จากเส้น Pine Warbler เราต่อไปยังวงแหวนเส้นที่สี่และเส้นสุดท้ายของวันนั้นคือเส้น Little Falls Loop เส้นนี้เป็นเส้นที่ยาวที่สุดในจำนวนทั้งหมด โดยสิริรวมระยะทางทั้งเส้นอยู่ที่ 2.3 ไมล์ หรือประมาณ 3.7 กิโล และมีป้ายบอกทางเป็นสีเหลือง พร้อมป้ายกำกับทางจราจรอันเดียวกันกับเส้นที่แล้ว ถ้าสงสัยว่าทำไมถึงไม่มีรูปน้ำตกตามที่ชื่อบอก ก็จะเฉลยว่าเพราะไม่มีน้ำตกให้เห็นนั่นเอง 😆 ไม่แน่ใจว่าเรามากันหน้าแล้งหรือเค้าตั้งชื่อเก๋ไก๋ไว้หลอกคนกันแน่ 🤨

At the far end, Little Falls Loop connects with yet again another loop – Longleaf Loop, which we did not take, because we were running out of daylight! 😛

ตรงสุดปลายทางของเส้น Little Falls Loop จะสามารถเชื่อมต่อไปยังวงแหวนอีกเส้นคือ Longleaf Loop ได้ แต่เราไม่ได้ไปกันเพราะไม่มีเวลาเหลือพอก่อนพระอาทิตย์ตก 😛

We looped back to complete the circle on Little Falls, then continued on to the remaining part of Pine Warbler Trail.

เราเดินวนกลับมาจนครบรอบวงแหวน Little Falls จากนั้นจึงวกกลับไปตามเก็บช่วงที่เหลือของเส้น Pine Warbler

We made it back on Walnut Hill Way towards the parking lot just in time right at sunset. 😅

กลับมาถึงเส้น Walnut Hill Way มายังลานจอดรถทันก่อนพระอาทิตย์ตกพอดีแบบเฉียดฉิวมาก 😅

Altogether, we clocked in at 4.74 miles, which took us a total of 2 hours!

วันนั้นรวมแล้วเดินกันไป 4.74 ไมล์ หรือประมาณเกือบ 8 กิโล ใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมงจากต้นจนจบ

Beautiful dusk colors on the sky on our drive home! 😍
