Pandemic Pause: Boone and Todd

On our last full day of the trip, we set out to tour two beautiful mountain towns in the area. Our first stop of the day was at Grandview Overlook, which is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, on the way to Boone.

วันสุดท้ายก่อนกลับเราไปเที่ยวกันที่เมืองบนภูเขาสองเมือง สองบรรยากาศ ระหว่างทางขอแวะถ่ายรูปที่ Grandview Overlook ซึ่งตั้งอยู่บน Blue Ridge Parkway ระหว่างทางไปเมือง Boone

Once in Boone, we rushed over to the Watauga County Farmer’s Market before they closed down at noon. 😊 It might be because it was really late, but there weren’t many people left when we got there. Stalls were in the process of shuttering up for the day, but we still managed to grab some of this beautiful Fall produce to take home with us.

After that we took a stroll down King Street, which is the main thoroughfare of downtown Boone.

One of the reasons I wanted to come check this place out was because of this mural. Apparently, it was part of the ‘United States Post Office Mural Project‘ – an initiative funded by the Federal government to support artists and give hope to the general public during the Great Depression era in 1934. For 9 years, until 1943, several pieces of public art were appointed, including this one we see right here. I first read about it in this awesome book ‘Big Lies in A Small Town‘ by Diane Chamberlain. The book describes a fictional story surrounding a mural commissioned for the little town of Edenton, North Carolina, which was full of drama, much like the controversies they had with some of these real-life murals. Apparently, Boone is one of the select few towns in NC where this type of murals has been preserved. The mural depicts the town’s namesake, Daniel Boone, on a hunting trip encountering locals with guns.

We stopped by Booneshine Brewing Company for some cold beer. Their outdoor space was perfectly arranged for pandemic-style outing. Even though it was cold, several people were out enjoying the day, many brought their four-legged companions along! We grabbed a few bites from the food truck they had there, to go with the beer. 😊

จากนั้นเราไปแวะจิบเบียร์เย็นๆกันที่ Booneshine Brewing Company ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่ชานเมือง ที่นี่เค้าจัดลานไว้โดยเฉพาะสำหรับให้คนมานั่งกินเบียร์กันเพลินๆตามสไตล์โควิดที่ต้องเว้นระยะห่างระหว่างกันและกัน ถึงแม้วันนั้นอากาศจะหนาวเหน็บ แต่คนแถวนี้ก็ไม่ย่นย่อ พาครอบครัวรวมทั้งน้องหมาออกมาปาร์ตี้กันอย่างสนุกสนาน ข้างๆลานมี food truck มาเสิร์ฟของว่างให้ชิมแกล้มเบียร์ เลยต้องไปอุดหนุนเค้าซะหน่อย 😊

Next stop is Todd, a tiny little town in the middle of nowhere that was home to Todd Mercantile, the legendary store that has been there since the late 18th century. Inside was a little bakery counter, with the infamous cinnamon buns that everybody said you can’t miss. We bought some to go for breakfast the next day and even a cinnamon adversary like me can honestly say that I didn’t hate it! 😛

ถัดไปคือเมือง Todd เมืองขนาดเล็กกะทัดรัดกลางหุบเขา ที่มีร้านขายของชำเก่าแก่ชื่อ Todd Mercantile ตั้งอยู่ ร้านนี้เปิดมาได้สองร้อยกว่าปีแล้ว นักท่องเที่ยวชอบมาแวะกันเพราะเค้าว่า ขนมปัง cinnamon ที่นี่เลื่องชื่อลือชามาก เลยต้องมาลองกันดู ชิมแล้วรสชาติไม่แพ้คำร่ำลือจริงๆ ขนาดคนเกลียดกลิ่นอบเชยอย่างเรายังกินได้ตั้งหลายคำ 😛

Pandemic Pause: Hiking at Grayson Highlands

After lunch, we drove north towards the NC-Virginia border, heading to one of the highlights of this trip – Grayson Highlands State Park, which is located just across the border in Virginia. I heard the rumor that they have wild ponies there and wanted to add another spotting to our portfolio, after our awesome experience on Shackleford. 😊

ทานข้าวกลางวันเสร็จ เราขับรถขึ้นเหนือเข้าไปที่รัฐเวอร์จิเนีย จุดหมายคือไฮไลต์ของทริปนี้ นั่นก็คือ Grayson Highlands State Park ซึ่งอยู่ถัดจากชายแดนระหว่างรัฐไปนิดเดียว ไปอ่านเจอมาว่าที่พาร์คนี้เค้ามีม้าป่าให้ดู คราวที่แล้วอุตส่าห์นั่งเรือข้ามเกาะไปดูที่ Shackleford มาแล้ว คราวนี้ลองเดินขึ้นเขาไปดูกันมั่ง 😊

Almost as soon as we entered the park, I spotted three wild ponies along the side of the road! 😎 We still aren’t sure if these were officially part of the herd or not, but we stopped by to say hello and snap some pictures anyway. 😆

ขับรถเข้าเขตพาร์คไม่ทันไร เราเกิดตาดีไปเห็นม้าสามตัวเล็มหญ้าอยู่ข้างทาง 😎 เลยต้องจอดรถลงไปส่องดู ไม่แน่ใจเหมือนกันว่านี่เป็นฝูงเดียวกันกับที่คนเค้ามาดูกันรึเปล่า แต่เห็นแล้วเลยอดถ่ายรูปเก็บไว้ไม่ได้ 😆

We took the Rhododendron Trail to the Horse Trail North, as suggested by the ranger at the visitor center. There was evidence of horse ‘discharges’ along the way, so we knew for sure there were some around. 😂 In the end, we did manage to find about 4 horses before turning back. It had been a long day and both of us were completely exhausted. 😓

เราแวะเข้าไปที่ศูนย์ต้อนรับนักท่องเที่ยวไปถามเจ้าหน้าที่เค้าดูว่าอยากเห็นม้าป่าต้องไปเดินที่ไหน เค้าบอกให้ลองไปเส้น Rhododendron Trail เดินไปได้ไม่เท่าไหร่ก็เริ่มเห็นเบาะแสหล่นอยู่ตามรายทาง เลยอุ่นใจว่าต้องได้เห็นเจ้าของ ‘มูล’ เหล่านี้แน่ๆ 😂 จากเส้น Rhododendron เราต่อไปยังเส้น Horse Trail North จนสุดท้ายได้เห็นม้ากินหญ้าอยู่สี่ตัวถึงได้ตกลงเดินกลับ วันนี้มาตะลอนตั้งแต่เช้าจนบ่ายแก่ อยากเดินต่อแต่หมดแรงไม่ไหว 😓

It was freezing cold and windy so we were fully decked out in our heavy winter gears, but the view was gorgeous it was so worth it! 😍

วันนั้นอากาศเย็นจัด แถมลมก็แรงเลยยิ่งยะเยือกขึ้นไปอีก เราเลยห่อหุ้มกันไปหลายชั้น ถึงจะหนาวแต่เราก็สั่นสู้เพื่อวิวสวยๆอย่างนี้ 😍

We did another 2 miles on our third hike that day, which took us about an hour. All in all, a very good hiking day for us! 😎

สรุปแล้วรอบนี้เดินไปอีก 2 ไมล์หรือประมาณ 3 กิโลกว่าๆ ใช้เวลาประมาณชั่วโมงนึงพอดี รวมๆแล้ววันนี้คือเดินกันจนขาลากแต่ก็แฮปปี้ 😎

Saturday Hike: Spring Blooms at Piedmont Nature Trails

We went back hiking again this weeknd, this time at Piedmont Nature Trails in Chapel Hill. I had actually picked another trail nearby at Mason Farm Biological Preserve, just because it looked to be the closest to my real goal of the day, which is to be featured later in this post. 😊 Somehow, Google Map directions led us here to the Piedmont Trails instead! 🤨 We only realized it when we saw the map at the trailhead. Since we did not have our hearts set, we just went along with it. 🤣 In any case, we had no expectation whatsoever before we got there. But this ended up being one of the best hikes we’ve had in a long time! 🤩

เสาร์นี้เราไปเดินป่ากันอีกตามเคย คราวนี้ไปกันที่ Piedmont Nature Trails ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่เมือง Chapel Hill จริงๆแล้วตั้งใจจะไปอีกที่คือ Mason Farm Biological Preserve เพราะดูแผนที่แล้วอยู่ใกล้กับร้านขนมที่เล็งไว้ 😊 แต่ปรากฎว่าคุณ GPS บน Google Map ทำไมถึงพามาที่นี่แทนก็ไม่ทราบได้ 🤨 จอดรถเสร็จเดินไปดูป้ายถึงได้รู้ว่ามาผิดที่ แต่เพราะยังไม่เคยมาเดินทั้งสองแห่งก็เลยเอาเป็นว่าเลยตามเลยละกัน 🤣 ก่อนมาก็ไม่ได้คาดหวังอะไรมากมาย แต่เดินเสร็จแล้วกลับสนุกสนานเกินคาด ต้องขอขอบคุณคุณ GPS ที่พาหลงมาถึงนี่ได้ 🤩

We started off with Streamside Trail, then switched over to Oak Hickory Trail, before hopping on Elephant Rock Trail which ended us up at Arboretum Drive, where we turned around and headed back. We ran into a few people in the beginning and towards the end, but once we got a little further uphill, the crowd started to thin out. There are no blazes on these trails, but color-coded trail markers are there at every turn. We had no trouble finding our way at all.

เราเริ่มต้นกันที่ Streamside Trail จากนั้นจึงไปต่อยัง Oak Hickory Trail และ Elephant Rock Trail ตามลำดับ เส้นหลังนี่พาเราไปโผล่ที่ถนน Arboretum Drive ซึ่งเป็นจุดที่เรากลับหลังหันเดินย้อนกลับทางเดิม ตอนต้นทางมีคนเยอะอยู่เหมือนกัน แต่พอทางเริ่มขึ้นเขา คนก็เริ่มบางตาลง ที่นี่ไม่มีหมุดปักบอกทางตามต้นไม้ แต่มีป้ายปักอยู่ทุกทางแยกคอยบอกชัดเจน ไม่มีการหลง

The trail started off with pretty standard winter terrain, a lot of barren trees, and mostly uphill! 😓

ช่วงแรกวิวก็เดิมๆตามบรรยากาศหน้าหนาวทั่วไป ต้นไม้ใบโกร๋น ใบไม้แห้งหล่นเต็มพื้น ทางชันขึ้นเขาตลอดสาย 😓

Things started to get more interesting once we got on Elephant Rock Trail. We noticed another couple heading towards us stooping down to take a look at something on the side. We waited until they left before going in to check it out. That’s when we saw this purple unicorn 🦄 hidden in the crack of a tree stump. My brain immediately translated the situation into a treasure hunt challenge! 😆 From then on, I kept my eyes peeled, scanning every nook and cranny we passed along the way.

พอเลี้ยวไปที่เส้น Elephant Rock ไปเจอหนุ่มสาวคู่นึงเดินลงเขามาสวนกันพอดี แอบไปเห็นเค้าด้อมๆมองๆอะไรอยู่ตรงข้างทาง พอเค้าเดินเลยไปเราเลยก้มลงไปดูบ้างด้วยความอยากรู้อยากเห็น ไปเจอเจ้ายูนิคอร์นสีม่วง 🦄 ตัวจิ๋วนี้ซ่อนอยู่ในตอไม้ สมองเราเลยแปลสถานการณ์ได้ว่าจะต้องเป็นการเล่นเกมซ่อนหาอะไรซักอย่าง 😆 จากนั้นเราเลยคอยส่องทุกซอกทุกมุม เผื่อจะเจออะไรซ่อนอยู่อีก

And I am happy to report that we spotted not only one or two, but FOUR more, mostly on the way back! 😎 It definitely helped take our minds off the steep climb when we were concentrating on finding these trinkets. 😆 Most of these little bits and pieces were found on the Elephant Rock Trail. But we did find one on the Oak Hickory Trail as well.

และขอรายงานด้วยความภาคภูมิใจว่า เราได้ไปเจอของเล่นชิ้นอื่นๆซ่อนอยู่ตามทางถึง “สี่” ชิ้นด้วยกัน 😎 ส่วนใหญ่เจอตอนขากลับ ซึ่งเป็นการช่วยให้การเดินขึ้นเขาของเราเป็นไปด้วยความเพลิดเพลินแทนที่จะหอบแฮกเหมือนเคย 😆 สามชิ้นในรูปเราเจอบนเส้น Elephant Rock พอเลี้ยวกลับลงมาที่เส้น Oak Hickory นึกว่าไม่มีแล้ว แต่ก็ยังไปเจออีกชิ้นสุดท้ายจนได้

A note about this so-called ‘Elephant Rock’… We scrutinized it from many different angles. We even climbed on it, to get yet another perspective. But neither of us saw any elephant there. 🤨 A lion, maybe. 🧐 A gorilla, could be. 🤔 But, no, definitely not elephant! 🙄😝

ขอเม้าท์เรื่อง ‘Elephant Rock’ นี่หน่อย ไอ้เราเห็นชื่อก็ตั้งใจว่าจะได้เห็นก้อนหินเป็นรูปช้างอย่างที่เค้าว่า ปรากฎไปถึงดูแล้วดูอีกยังไงก็ไม่เห็นช้างซักตัว อุตส่าห์ตะกายขึ้นไปยืนบนยอดเผื่อจะเห็น แต่ยังไงก็ไม่ใช่ ดูไกลๆคล้ายๆสิงโต 🤨 หรือจากอีกมุมจะใกล้เคียงลิงกอริลล่าก็พอรับได้ 🧐 บอกได้แต่ว่าไม่ใช่ช้างแน่นอน 🙄😝

Past the rock, the trail started hugging alongside Morgan Creek.

Shortly afterwards, Joel turned around and looked at me with wild eyes. 😲 I followed his gaze to one side of the trail and had to step closer to realize I was looking at a daffodil patch! Right here in the middle of the forest! 😳 It was clearly man-made because there was a path right through the middle of it.

เดินไปอีกหน่อย คุณสามีหยุดกึกหันมามองหน้า 😲 กำลังจะถามว่าหยุดทำไม พอดีเหลือบไปเห็นทุ่งเขียวขจีอยู่ไกลๆ เดินเข้าไปใกล้ๆถึงได้เห็นว่าเป็นทุ่งดอกแดฟโฟดิลกำลังงอกงามอยู่กลางป่า 😳 ดูแล้วต้องมีใครมาปลูกไว้แน่ๆ เพราะมีทางเดินตัดไว้ตรงกลางเสร็จสรรพ ไม่ทราบว่ามายังไง แต่ยังไงก็ขอขอบคุณที่ให้เราได้มาเก็บรูปสวยๆโดยมิได้คาดหมาย 🥰

A little further along, we crossed over this water/sewage pipe to get to the other side of the creek, where the trail continued.

ทางพาลงน้ำ แต่มีท่ออันใหญ่ไว้ให้ข้ามได้ ดูแล้วเหมือนง่ายๆ แต่เดินไปอยู่ตรงกลางน้ำก็อดเสียวไม่ได้

We ran into yet another random bush of beautiful flowers! 😍 Camelias, I think… 🤔 White, blush pink, hot pink, bright red, you name it! My mind was officially blown! 🤯

ข้ามฝั่งไปเจอดงดอกไม้อีกอันกลางป่า 😍 คิดว่าน่าจะเป็นดอกคามิเลีย 🤔 มีทุกสีทุกเฉด ตั้งแต่ขาวโพลน ชมพูเรื่อๆ ไปจนถึงชมพูแปร๋น หรือแดงฉานก็มี ป่านี้เป็นป่าไม้มหัศจรรย์หรืออย่างไรกัน 🤯

นอกจากนี้ยังมีดอกไม้ป่าที่เจอได้ทั่วไป รวมไปถึงลูกเบอร์รี่ป่า และยอดไม้ที่เริ่มแตกหน่อ ส่งสัญญาณให้ทราบว่าฤดูใบไม้ผลิกำลังใกล้จะมาถึง

It makes me sad whenever I see people defacing nature’s beauty like this… 😭

ไปเห็นพวกมือบอนมาทำลายธรรมชาติกลางป่าอย่างนี้ทีไร ชวนให้เศร้าใจทุกที 😭

We clocked in at 3.66 miles, which took us 1 hour and 41 minutes, most of it uphill, which would explain my elevated heart rate almost throughout the entire hike! 😛

วันนั้นเราเดินกันไป 3.66 ไมล์หรือประมาณเกือน 6 กิโล ใช้เวลาเกินชั่วโมงครึ่ง เพราะทางชันขึ้นเขาเกือบตลอด อัตราการเต้นของหัวใจเลยสูงตามไปด้วย 😛

After that, we headed to what was supposed to be the real intention behind this hike. Meet Fresh is a Taiwanese desserts shop chain, with several locations all over the US. The one we went to was located at Meadowmont Village in Chapel Hill. My friend tipped me off on it and I had been itching to try. 😋

เดินเสร็จถึงเวลาไปเติมน้ำมันกัน มีเพื่อนแอบมาบอกว่าที่นี่มีร้าน Meet Fresh ซึ่งเป็นร้านขนมชื่อดังจากไต้หวันมาตั้งสาขาอยู่ที่ย่าน Meadowmont Village ในเมือง Chapel Hill เลยตะหงิดๆอยากจะมาลองชิมดู 😋

We ordered the Pudding & Q-Mochi Shaved Ice. I did not expect such a huge portion. 😳 Together, we were able to finish roughly half of it, before we called it quits. 😅 It was good. I’m glad we tried it. But if we ever make it back there, I’ll probably order something else… Something that comes in a hopefully much more reasonable serving size.

เราสั่งน้ำแข็งไสรส Pudding & Q-Mochi ออกมาเกือบจะเป็นลม จานใหญ่เป็นภูเขาไฟขนาดนี้จะกินกันยังไง 😳 สองคนช่วยกันแซะไปมา สุดท้ายยังเหลือเกินครึ่ง 😅 ก็อร่อยอยู่ แต่ติที่ว่าเยอะเหลือเกิน กินไม่หมดเสียดายของ ถ้ามีโอกาสกลับมาอีกคงจะลองสั่งอย่างอื่น หวังว่าจะออกมาที่เล็กกว่านี้

After desserts, we moved on to the main course. 🤣 Hubby went with Al’s Burger Shack, which was voted Best Burger in America in 2018 by Food & Wine Magazine & TripAdvisor! I opted for the Penang Char Kway Teow from Rasa Malaysia right across the street, over in South Village. Both equally delicious, if you asked me! 😉

หลังของหวานเราไปต่อด้วยของคาวกัน 🤣 คุณสามีเลือกกิน Al’s Burger Shack ซึ่งเค้าได้รับการโหวตจากนิตยสาร Food & Wine และเวบนำเที่ยว TripAdvisor ว่าเป็นเบอร์เกอร์ที่อร่อยที่สุดในอเมริกาประจำปี 2018 ส่วนเราขอไปสั่ง ฉ่าก๋วยเตี๋ยว จากร้านมาเลย์ Rasa Malaysia ฝั่งตรงข้ามกลับไปกินที่บ้านแทน ถ้าถามเราเราว่าอร่อยกว่าเบอร์เกอร์ของเค้าซะอีก 😉

Saturday Hike: Another Muddy MST at Falls Lake

This past Saturday, the weather was so nice it felt like such a crime not to go hiking! 😆 Since we have been noticing some Spring blooms starting to pop up during our weekday walks nearby, I thought it would be great to check out the trail at Eno River, where we had great luck with wildflower spotting before. It turned out a ton other people had exactly the same idea. 🙄 When we got to the parking lot there, it was at about 200% capacity! 😅 There were cars everywhere, many parked along the sides of the road because the official spots were all taken.

เมื่อวันเสาร์ที่แล้ว อากาศดีมาก แดดจ้า ฟ้าใส อุณหภูมิกำลังดี ไม่ร้อนไม่หนาว ทำให้เกิดอาการอยู่ไม่ติดบ้าน ต้องออกไปเดินป่ากันให้ได้ 😆 ช่วงอาทิตย์ที่ผ่านมา ออกไปเดินออกกำลังใกล้ๆบ้าน ไปเห็นมาว่าดอกไม้แถวนี้เริ่มจะออกดอกกัน เลยตั้งใจว่าจะไปเดินที่ Eno River เพราะจำได้ว่ามีดอกไม้ป่าสวยๆให้ดูตามทาง ไปถึงปรากฎว่าชาวบ้านแถวนี้มีความคิดเดียวกับเรา 🙄 ลานจอดรถเต็มจนล้น รถจอดกันเลยออกมาข้างทางยาวเป็นกิโล 😅

We quickly turned around and headed over to another obscure spot we had been before. This Day Hike Section T of the Mountains-to-Sea trail at Falls Lake on Red Mill Road in north Durham was one of the least crowded trails we know of in the area. There was only one other car parked there when we arrived.

เลยต้องกลับรถออกมาหาที่เดินกันใหม่ เห็นจำนวนคนแล้วคิดว่าไปไหนก็คงแน่น สุดท้ายเลยตกลงไปลองที่เคยไปกันแล้วแน่ใจว่าไม่มีคน ช่วง T ของเส้นทางเดินป่า Mountains-to-Sea ที่ Falls Lake ซึ่งมีจุดเริ่มต้นอยู่ที่ถนน Red Mill ทางตอนเหนือของเมือง Durham แห่งนี้ เรามาเดินกันเมื่อปีที่แล้วตอนที่โควิดเริ่มระบาดได้ไม่นาน มาคราวนี้ยังปลอดคนเหมือนเดิม ไปถึงเจอรถจอดอยู่แค่คันเดียวเท่านั้น

The trail was straightforward, with distinct white blazes guiding us along the way. We enjoyed the nice quiet hike by ourselves without running into a single human being the entire way. The weather was perfect, nice and cool at 55 degrees and sunny. It was quite muddy in several spots, but nothing our trusty old boots couldn’t handle. 😆

ทางที่นี่ตรงไปตรงมาไม่คดเคี้ยว มีป้ายบอกทางจุดขาวให้เห็นตลอดทาง เดินยังไงก็ไม่หลง วิวก็ไม่มีอะไรหวือหวา เห็นทะเลสาบอยู่ไกลๆ แต่ดีตรงที่ว่าปลอดคน เดินไปจนกลับมาถึงรถไม่มีเพื่อนมนุษย์ปรากฎมาให้เห็นเลยซักราย อากาศเย็นสบายกำลังดี อุณหภูมิอยู่ที่ 55 องศาฟาเรนไฮต์ หรือประมาณ 13 องศาเซลเซียส ทางมีที่เฉอะแฉะอยู่บ้าง แต่รองเท้าบู๊ตเดินป่าคู่เก๋าของเรารับมือได้สบายมาก 😆

We even saw some wildflowers! 😍 And some mushrooms, of course.

นอกจากจะมีเห็ดป่าให้ชมแล้ว ยังอุตส่าห์ได้ไปเจอดอกไม้ป่าตามที่ตั้งใจไว้ 😍

Time for a nice thorough wash, maybe? 🙄

We clocked in at a little under 4 miles in a little over 1.5 hours.

วันนั้นเดินกันไปเกือบๆ 4 ไมล์ หรือประมาณ 6 กิโลกว่าๆ ใช้เวลารวมแล้วหนึ่งชั่วโมงครึ่งพอดี

Pandemic Pause: Hiking in the Blue Ridge

The next morning, we drove over to the Blue Ridge Parkway, starting with Tompkins Knob Overlook.

เช้าวันรุ่งขึ้น เราขับรถไปเที่ยวกันที่ Blue Ridge Parkway โดยเริ่มต้นกันที่ Tompkins Knob Overlook

From the parking area, there is a dirt path that leads over to Jesse Brown’s cabin and Cool Spring Baptist Church. According to the cool sign post, this was where traveling preachers held outdoor services for local families.

จากที่จอดรถมีทางพาเดินไปชมกระท่อม Jesse Brown และ Cool Spring Baptist Church ป้ายด้านหน้าบอกไว้ว่านี่เป็นที่ที่ชาวบ้านซึ่งอาศัยอยู่ในละแวกนี้มานั่งฟังคำเทศนาจากบาทหลวงสัญจรที่เดินสายผ่านมาแวะพักที่กระท่อม

From there, we drove the short distance to E.B. Jeffress Park to start our first hike of the day at the Cascades Trail. The quick loop led us on a nicely paved gravel path that features all the main species of trees that can be found in the Blue Ridge Forest. The trail eventually took us across a bridge and then down to Cascade Falls, then circled back to the parking lot.

We finished the one-mile loop within 45 minutes, a little longer than expected due to the steep incline and a bit of foot traffic along the narrow paths! 😝

รอบนี้เดินกันไปประมาณหนึ่งไมล์ หรือประมาณ 1.7 กิโล ใช้เวลา 45 นาที นานกว่าที่คาดไว้เนื่องจากทางที่ปีนขึ้นไปดูน้ำตกค่อนข้างแคบ เลยเกิดการจราจรติดขัดกันเล็กน้อย 😝

After that, we stopped by for the view at Lewis Fork Overlook.

Then heading on to Mt Jefferson Overlook, where we walked over to check out these cows grazing on this beautiful green pasture.

Nearby is The Lump Overlook, where we saw more cows…😄 The sign post there tells the story of Tom Dula, a confederate soldier convicted of murdering his lover, and later sentenced to death for the crime. The incident went on to gain national sensation and later inspired a popular folk song called ‘Tom Dooley‘ which was how the locals pronounced Tom’s name.

ไปอีกหน่อยเป็น The Lump Overlook ซึ่งมีวัวอีกสายพันธุ์ไว้ให้ชมกัน 😄 ป้ายที่ตั้งไว้เล่าถึงเรื่องราวของฆาตกรท้องถิ่นชื่อ Tom Dula ซึ่งเป็นทหารจากฝ่ายสมาพันธรัฐที่ถูกตัดสินประหารชีวิตด้วยการแขวนคอเพราะไปฆ่าคนรักเสียชีวิต ข่าวนี้ดังไปทั่วประเทศ จนกระทั่งมีคนเอาไปแต่งเป็นเพลงลูกทุ่ง ‘Tom Dooley‘ ซึ่งเป็นชื่อที่คนแถวนี้ใช้เรียกคุณทอม

We drove over to Jumpinoff Rock, where we parked and went on our second hike of the day. The short trail took us up to the overlook that offered another great view of the Blue Ridge.

It took us about half an hour to finish the out-and-back trail which was just short of a mile in total.

Quick stop at the Northwest Trading Post in Glendale Springs which had rave reviews online. We were hoping to grab a quick bite but unfortunately there wasn’t much being offered there in terms of food… 😆

อุตส่าห์ไปแวะที่ร้าน Northwest Trading Post ในเมือง Glendale Springs เพราะเห็นรีวิวมาว่าดีเลิศ นึกว่าจะไปหาอะไรกินกัน แต่พอไปถึงเข้าไปดูแล้วปรากฎว่าไม่มีอาหารค่ะ เลยต้องไปต่อกันดาบหน้า 😆

We ended up getting lunch at Rodie’s Parkway Restaurant over in West Jefferson. These two dogs materialized out of nowhere as soon as we sat down outside with our food. They waited very politely nearby and we ended up rewarding their patience with a few scraps once we were done with the meal. 😇

สรุปแล้ววันนั้นไปทานมื้อกลางวันกันที่ร้าน Rodie’s Parkway Restaurant ที่เมือง West Jefferson ซึ่งอยู่ถัดไปแค่นิดเดียว พอได้ของกินออกมายังไม่ทันได้นั่ง ก็มีแขกตามดอยสองท่านนี้มาจากไหนกันไม่ทราบมายืนตาละห้อยอยู่ข้างๆ แต่พอเห็นว่าเราไม่แบ่งให้ แกก็หลบไปนั่งรอด้วยความอดทน จนสุดท้ายกินเสร็จเลยต้องเหลือเศษขนมปังไว้ให้เป็นรางวัลกันซักหน่อย 😇

We walked over to browse around at this cute little Greenhouse Crafts Shop next door while waiting for our food to be ready. They have the infamous ‘Tom Dooley‘ CD for sale inside! 😆

ติดกันเป็นร้านขายของกระจุกกระจิกชื่อ Greenhouse Crafts Shop ระหว่างเดินเตร็ดเตร่คอยอาหารตามสั่ง เกิดตาดีไปเห็นซีดีเพลง ‘Tom Dooley‘ ที่เพิ่งไปอ่านเจอมาวางขายอยู่พอดี 😆

These four posh gentlemen came along in their matching fancy rides, and parked at the lot while we ate. We saw them visiting the Holy Trinity Church across the street so we went over to check it out after lunch.

กินข้าวกันอยู่พลางๆ แก๊งค์ลุงสี่ท่านนี้ซิ่งรถปอร์เช่มาจอดเรียงกันอย่างเป็นระเบียบหน้าร้าน ก่อนพากันเดินข้ามถนนไปชมโบสถ์ Holy Trinity Church ฝั่งตรงข้าม เรากินเสร็จเลยขอเลียนแบบลุงข้ามไปดูกันมั่ง

The tiny little chapel had a beautiful Last Supper fresco featured inside, along with other really cool art pieces on the walls.

โบสถ์เล็กๆแห่งนี้ข้างในนอกจากจะมีภาพวาดจิตรกรรมฝาผนัง The Last Supper ตั้งเด่นอยู่ที่ด้านหน้าแล้ว ตามผนังทั้งสองข้างยังมีภาพพระเยซูต่างอิริยาบถเรียงรายไว้ให้ชมกันอีกด้วย

Pandemic Pause: Our Cabin in the Woods at Fleetwood


Trip Date: October-November 2020

วันสัญจร: ตุลาคม-พฤศจิกายน 2563

In Fleetwood, we stayed at a very cool airbnb on top of the mountain. The ‘Rustic Courage Cabin‘ came ready with everything we ever needed, and more! The cabin sits on top of a very steep road off of Highway 221. We were told that a 4-wheel-drive is recommended. 😬 Thankfully there was no rain during our stay, because our all-wheel-drive sedan barely made it up as it was! 😅

ทริปภูเขาเที่ยวนี้ เราไปเช่าเคบินหลังน้อยบนภูเขาอยู่ที่เมือง Fleetwood เจ้าของเค้าตั้งชื่อเอาไว้ว่า ‘Rustic Courage Cabin‘ หลังเล็กก็จริง แต่มีเครื่องอำนวยความสะดวกครบทุกอย่าง บ้านตั้งอยู่บนถนนสายเล็กๆเลียบไฮเวย์สาย 221 ก่อนไปเจ้าของแนะนำว่าควรใช้รถ 4-wheel-drive 😬 เพราะทางขึ้นเขาชันมาก แต่ก็ยังคิดว่ารถเก๋ง all-wheel-drive ของเราน่าจะขึ้นไหว ไปถึงทางเค้าชันจริงอย่างที่ว่าไว้ ถ้าฝนตกถนนลื่นคงไม่มีสิทธิ์ตะกายขึ้นไปถึงแน่ๆ โชคดีที่อากาศดีไม่มีฝนก็เลยโอเค 😅

The kitchen was very large and well equipped.

Comfortable good-sized bedrooms, small but cozy.

I love how they had all these cute little decorative items all over the place.

We enjoyed cozy nights in front of this fireplace.

Our favorite thing about this place had to be their hot tub. What an awesome way to wind down after a full day of excursions! There was a blue moon during our stay on the Halloween weekend, and we had a perfect view of it from the hot tub. 😍

ที่สุดยอดที่สุดก็คืออ่างน้ำอุ่นบนระเบียงอันนี้แหละ ออกไปตะลอนทั้งวันกลับมาถึงลงแช่น้ำร้อนๆอย่างนี้มันช่วยผ่อนคลายสบายตัวจริงๆ ช่วงวีคเอนด์ที่ไปตรงกับวันฮัลโลวีนมีพระจันทร์เต็มดวงพอดี วิวจากในอ่างเป็นพระจันทร์ลอยเด่นอยู่บนท้องฟ้างามราวกับภาพวาด 😍

We enjoyed this beautiful view of the mountains and the river down below for our morning coffee, evening sunsets, and moon rises!

วิวจากระเบียงมองลงไปเป็นป่าทึบ มีแม่น้ำไหลผ่าน แถมด้วยทิวเขาจรดที่ขอบฟ้า เหมาะกับการมานั่งจิบกาแฟเพลินๆตอนเช้า นั่งดูพระอาทิตย์ตกดินยามบ่าย และพระจันทร์ขึ้นยามค่ำ

Outside, there was a fire pit, where we made our roasted marshmallows and s’mores during the cold nights.

นอกบ้านมีที่นั่งรอบกองไฟเตรียมไว้ให้ย่างมาร์ชแมลโลวกินกันระหว่างนั่งผิงไฟให้หายหนาว

This picture perfect maple tree right outside the cabin turned out to be one of the best fall colors we saw during this entire trip. The trees on the way up the mountain cabin weren’t too shabby either! 😆

สรุปว่าต้นเมเปิลสีแดงหน้าบ้านต้นนี้เป็นใบไม้สีสวยที่สุดที่ได้เห็นกันตลอดทริปนี้ ตามทางขึ้นบ้านก็พอมีให้เห็นอยู่บ้างประปราย 😆

Pandemic Pause: Yadkin County Barn Quilts

We departed upon our second mountain trip on the last weekend of October, hoping to see better fall colors this time. But mother nature was not on our side, yet again… 😔 It was way past peak foliage when we arrived, but the weather was nice and cold, and our trip still turned out to be a colorful one nonetheless! 😍

ทริปภูเขารอบสองของเราบังเกิดขึ้นเมื่อปลายเดือนตุลาคม อุตส่าห์ขอกลับไปแก้ตัวอีกที หวังว่าคราวนี้จะได้เห็นใบไม้สีสวยกว่าคราวที่แล้ว แต่อนิจจาฝนฟ้าไม่เป็นใจ 😔 คราวก่อนมาเร็วไป คราวนี้สามอาทิตย์ถัดมาปรากฎว่าสายไปซะแล้ว แต่ยังโชคดีที่เจออากาศเย็นสบาย และถึงจะไม่ได้เห็นใบไม้เปลี่ยนสี แต่เรากลับได้ไปเห็นสีสันในรูปแบบอื่นแทน 😍

During my research for the trip, I came upon something I’ve never heard of before called ‘barn quilt trails‘. This is a tradition that was established relatively recently within the past two decades. The first official occurence started in 2001 by a quilter in Ohio by the name of Donna Sue Groves, who decided to hang a painted quilt pattern on the family barn to honor her mother and their heritage. After that, the concept took off and became prevalent in parts of the United States and Canada. Here in US, there are quilt trails available for public viewing in more than 48 states, featuring more than 7,000 quilts.

I initially thought that people were literally hanging homemade quilts on their barns. My husband pointed out, reasonably so, that it would not be sustainable, given that they had to withstand years of wind, rain, and daily sunlight. Turns out, these were squares of quilt patterns painted on pieces of metal or wood. Oh, and they don’t always have to be hung on barns either – any types of structure would do! 🤪

ตอนแรกที่ได้ยินนึกว่าเค้าเอาผ้าห่มทั้งผืนมาแขวนกัน คุณสามีติงว่ามันจะทนลมฟ้าอากาศได้ซักกี่วัน เออก็จริงของเค้า ปรากฎว่าไปอ่านรายละเอียดแล้วถึงได้รู้ว่าเค้าทำกรอบเป็นลายผ้ามาแขวน โดยใช้แผ่นโลหะหรือไม้มาเพ้นท์ลายที่เลือกไว้ อ้อ แล้วอีกอย่างคือ เค้าไม่ได้แขวนกันแค่ตามโรงนา จะเป็นอาคารบ้านเรือนอะไรได้ทั้งนั้น 🤪

On this trip, we had the chance to see some of the beautiful barn quilts on display in both Yadkin and Ashe counties. Big thanks for my hubby’s patience while we drove around looking for these quilts! They were not always easy to find, even though we had the addresses. Some of them were gone. Others were so worn down they were almost unrecognizable when we actually spotted them. And a lot of the time, it was so deep inside what looked like private property, we weren’t sure if we were trespassing or not… 😬 I did my best to be quick about snapping these pictures and made sure we were in and out in (almost) no time. 😅

ทริปนี้เรามีโอกาสได้ไปชมงานศิลปะแหวกแนวหลายสีสันนี้ในเขต Yadkin County และ Ashe County ต้องขอขอบคุณคุณสามีผู้น่ารักที่มีความอดทนสูงมาก อุตส่าห์ขับรถตระเวนหาลายผ้าอยู่ได้เป็นชั่วโมงๆโดยไม่บ่นซักคำ ถึงจะมีแผนที่เป็นไกด์แต่ก็ไม่ใช่ว่าจะหาเจอกันได้ง่ายๆ บางอันไปถึงเค้าปลดระวางไปแล้ว บางอันแขวนไว้นานจนสีซีดจางแทบดูลายไม่ออก และบางที่ก็ไม่ใช่ว่าจะเห็นได้จากริมถนน ต้องเดินกันเข้าไปในเขตบ้านเจ้าของที่จนเราเองก็ไม่แน่ใจว่าไปบุกรุกเค้ารึเปล่า 😬 แต่ก็พยายามรีบไปรีบถ่ายรูปอย่างรวดเร็วที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ 😅

We only made it to this one barn quilt in Jonevilles. The ‘Rose of Sharon’ is located in front of the Yadkin Valley Museum.

Further attempts to locate more quilts were a complete failure after we ran into several road blocks due to recent flooding in the area. We came across this river where we saw a group of gawkers on the side of the road, so naturally we had to stop and check it out. 🧐 Turned out the river was overflowing into nearby properties! 😱 Besides a few police cars blocking traffic coming onto the bridge, there were a few USGS guys on the scene assessing the damage.

On our way back home we stopped by for a few more barn quilts in Yadkinville. That first picture up there showed an example of one of the ones that was out of commission. When we first got to the address, we couldn’t find a quilt. It was when we were turning the car around to leave, when I saw it out of the corner of my eye, laying behind one of the many deserted structures in the complex!

Pandemic Pit Stop: Tramping, Dam-Raiding, Barnstorming, and Pubbing

This weekend, we went back hiking, or as the New Zealanders call it – tramping, after a long break! We were trying to lay low in response to yet another explosion of numbers on COVID-19 cases, but after a month of absolutely no outdoor activities, I finally succumbed to the urge. 😛

เพราะว่าเคสโควิดพุ่งฉิวตั้งแต่ปลายปีไม่มีหยุด เลยพยายามจะอยู่ติดบ้านไม่ออกไปไหนเพื่อความปลอดภัย แต่สุดท้ายอดไม่ไหว เมื่อวันหยุดสุดสัปดาห์ที่แล้วเลยขอซักนิด เรากลับไปเดินป่ากันอีกครั้งหลังจากที่นั่งจับเจ่าอยู่บ้านมาได้หนึ่งเดือนเต็มๆ 😛

We started off with a hike at White Pines Nature Preserve in Sanford. The small parking lot was quite full when we got there, but since there were so many trails, we were optimistic that we weren’t going to run into too many people…🤞

เริ่มวันกันด้วยการเดินป่าที่ White Pines Nature Preserve ในเมือง Sanford ไปถึงที่จอดรถเต็ม 😐 แต่นับดูแล้วก็มีแค่ไม่กี่คัน ไหนๆไปถึงแล้วเลยพยายามคิดบวกเอาว่าที่ทางเค้าก็กว้างขวางคงจะไม่เดินไปเจอะคนเยอะนัก 🤞

We began with the Gilbert Yager Trail, before continuing on to the Deep Bluffs, River, White Pines, and Schoolkids Trails, in that order. All of them were interconnected and very well marked with distinct color-coded blazes. The original plan was to take the Schoolkids Trail all the way back to the parking lot, but once we realized there were quite a few families on that particular trail, we changed course and took the River Trail back instead.

เราเริ่มกันด้วยเส้น Gilbert Yager แล้วไปต่อที่ Deep Bluffs, River, White Pines, และ Schoolkids ตามลำดับ ทางทุกเส้นเชื่อมโยงต่อกันโดยมีป้ายบอกอยู่ชัดเจนทุกแยก แต่ละเส้นใช้หมุดปักคนละสีไม่ต้องกลัวหลง ตอนแรกกะว่าจะเดินตามเส้น Schoolkids กลับไปถึงที่จอดรถ แต่ปรากฎว่าไปถึงเพิ่งจะเข้าใจว่าชื่อเค้าไม่ได้ตั้งไว้มั่วๆ มันเต็มไปด้วยเด็กน้อยตามคำโฆษณาจริงๆ เราเลยต้องเปลี่ยนแผนใช้เส้น River เดินกลับแทน

The trails took us along Deep River in parts, making this mostly dreary 😆 winter hike a little more interesting. The paths were somewhat sloppy, especially along the blue River Trail. There was a slick ice spot at one point from a recent freeze. The temperature was cold, in the low 40s but we did dress properly for the occasion, so we were comfortable.

หลังจากขึ้นเขาลงห้วยกันซักพักก็ไปถึงฝั่งแม่น้ำ Deep River ไม่แน่ใจว่าจะลึกสมชื่อมั้ยแต่ว่ามีความกว้างขวางแบบจริงจัง ได้เดินเลียบแม่น้ำชมวิวกันเพลินๆบ้าง ไม่งั้นสภาพป่าหน้าหนาวก็ไม่มีอะไรน่าตื่นเต้นตามระเบียบ ทางบางส่วนยังเฉอะแฉะจากพายุหิมะ/ฝนเมื่อไม่กี่วันก่อน อากาศยังคงเย็นยะเยือกอยู่ที่ประมาณ 5-6 องศาเซลเซียส และยังมีน้ำแข็งหลงเหลืออยู่ให้เห็นอยู่บ้างเป็นหย่อมๆ

A surprise wildlife encounter in the middle of the woods! I think we scared this possum 😬 because he started climbing up the tree when he heard us coming. He was so high up by the time we passed him! 

ไปเจอสัตว์ป่ากลางทาง คาดว่าเจ้าพอสซัมตัวนี้คงตกใจได้ยินเราเดินมา 😬 เลยรีบปีนขึ้นต้นไม้ ยิ่งเข้าใกล้แกก็ยิ่งปีนสูงขึ้นๆ กว่าจะเดินพ้นก็ขึ้นไปถึงเกือบสุดยอดแล้ว

All in all, we clocked in at 2.30 miles, which took us one whole hour because of the elevation gain. We only ran into a couple of families on the entire hike, so I’d call this a pretty good spot for a quick pandemic getaway. 😇

วันนั้นเดินกันไป 2.30 ไมล์ หรือประมาณเกือบๆ 4 กิโลได้ ใช้เวลาไปชั่วโมงนึงเต็มๆเพราะทางขึ้นๆลงๆ สรุปแล้วเดินสวนเจออยู่สองครอบครัวตลอดทาง นับได้ว่าเป็นเส้นทางเดินป่าที่ค่อนข้างจะปลอดภัยสำหรับกิจกรรมนอกบ้านยุคโควิด 😇

After the hike, we went to check out a couple of roadside attractions that had been on my list for a while.

หลังจากเดินป่ากันเสร็จ เราถือโอกาสไปแวะเที่ยวสองจุดที่เล็งไว้มาหลายเดือนแล้ว

First up was the Old Carbonton Dam, an abandoned concrete tower on the bank of Deep River. The dam, which operated from 1921-2004, was torn down in 2005 due to damage to the surrounding ecosystems, but its powerhouse remained. Colorful graffiti art adorns the structure, both inside and out. The view of the river from the window up top was spookily beautiful. 😆

From there, we drove on to a little town called Cameron, where a bunch of old barns had been transformed into roadside canvases. About 20 years ago, David Ellis, a New York-based artist, recruited his friends to come here to his hometown and together they set out to paint old tobacco barns all over town. The locals called them ‘The Barnstormers’ and they enjoyed the attention this unexpected collection brought to this tiny town. We followed the tip on StrangeCarolinas and zeroed in at the intersection of Nickens, Stanton Hill, and Red Hill roads, where they said we could find the largest concentration of said barns. And we weren’t disappointed. Even though a lot of the paint had chipped and faded through the years, and the barns themselves falling apart, it was still quite a sight to behold. 😍

I found a map of the barns posted online at Atlas Obscura which a user there said she got from a local antique store, just in case anybody wants to venture out there!

เผอิญไปเจอแผนที่ที่มีคนใจดีมาโพสต์ไว้ที่เวบไซต์ Atlas Obscura ซึ่งเค้าบอกว่าไปได้มาจากร้านขายของเก่าในเมือง เลยเอาลิงค์มาฝากไว้เผื่อใครอยากจะไปดูของจริง

We ended the evening with a sumptuous meal at The Sly Fox, a quaint little British pub in Southern Pines we used to frequent pre-COVID times. There is a small courtyard section that was perfect for outdoor dining purposes. It was a cold day – temperature had dropped into the 30s 🥶 by the time we got there. No surprise we were the only people out braving the chill. But we did dress properly for the occasion, and they also had several heat lamps set up which definitely helped! All in all, we enjoyed the meal and the day out, and we are looking forward to our next excursion! 😉

ไปจบรายการกันด้วยเบียร์เย็นๆและอาหารอร่อยๆที่ร้าน The Sly Fox ในเมือง Southern Pines ซึ่งเป็นผับสไตล์อังกฤษที่เราเคยมากันบ่อยๆก่อนยุคโควิด ที่นี่เค้ามีสวนเล็กๆด้านนอกไว้ให้นั่งกินได้เวลาอากาศดีๆ วันนั้นที่ไปอุณหภูมิอยู่ที่ประมาณเกือบศูนย์องศาเซลเซียส 🥶 เลยไม่มีใครมานั่งเป็นเพื่อน แต่เพื่อความปลอดภัยเราเลยเลือกนั่งโต้ลมหนาวกันอยู่สองคน เค้ามีฮีทเตอร์เตรียมไว้พร้อมสรรพ แถมเราแต่งองค์กันมาเต็มยศเลยไม่ได้รู้สึกหนาวซักเท่าไหร่ สรุปว่าดีใจที่ได้ออกนอกบ้าน และหวังว่าจะได้มีโอกาสไปเที่ยวเล่นกันอีกในอนาคตอันใกล้นี้ 😉

Pandemic Pause: Meetup in the Smokies, Day 3

Trip Date: October 2020

วันสัญจร: ตุลาคม 2563

The next day, we said goodbye to our cozy little cabin and headed home to our fur babies. We stopped on the way out so I could take some pictures of our surroundings. Our cabin sat at the end of Sticks N Stones Road, which was right around the corner from Hellbender Road. 🙄

รุ่งขึ้นได้เวลากลับบ้านไปหาน้องแมว ทริปนี้ถึงจะสั้นแต่จัดทัวร์ซะเต็มเหยียด ก่อนกลับเพิ่งจะมีเวลามาแวะถ่ายรูปบริเวณใกล้ๆเคบินมาให้ดูว่าคนแถวนี้เค้าตั้งชื่อถนนกันเสียเก๋ไก๋ ตัวบ้านตั้งอยู่บนนถนนชื่อ Sticks N Stones ซึ่งอยู่ถัดจากอีกถนนที่ชื่อ Hellbender 🙄

At the bottom of the hill, right on the bank of the Tuckasegee River, there was this little RV campground with cute teepees called Grumpy Bear Campground, which can be seen from across the river on the main road into town. They had cool Halloween decorations out front that looked pretty spooky at night.

ที่ปากซอยทางเข้าซึ่งอยู่เลียบกับแม่น้ำ Tuckasegee มีแคมป์กราวด์สำหรับรถบ้านชื่อ Grumpy Bear Campground ตั้งอยู่ เราแอบเข้าไปถ่ายรูปเต้นท์อินเดียนแดงขอเค้ามาให้ดูกัน ทำเลดูดีอยู่ติดฝั่งแม่น้ำ ช่วงนั้นใกล้วันฮัลโลวีนเลยมีหุ่นผีน้อยไว้คอยต้อนรับอยู่ด้านหน้า

We stopped by to check out Darnell Farms, which was right across the street. I had a blast snapping all these pictures of their beautiful stalls and produce. They had the best “Dream Whips” fruit slushees – we got the green apple flavor, which came topped with caramel and was honestly the best thing I had on this trip! 😋

ก่อนไปอ่านเจอว่าไอติมรสผลไม้ที่ Darnell Farms อร่อยมากห้ามพลาด เลยต้องแวะไปชิมกันดู วันนั้นเค้ามีรสแอบเปิ้ลผสมคาราเมล กินแล้วแทบจะละลายตามไอติม อร่อยจริงสมคำร่ำลือ 😋 เสียดายซื้อกลับบ้านไม่ได้ แต่ก็ได้มะเขือเทศสวยๆกับผักผลไม้อีกหลายอย่างติดไม้ติดมือกลับมาแทน

Our last tour stop was in the next town over, Sylva. Apparently, this was where they filmed the famous Hollywood movie ‘The Fugitive‘. The producer left the wreckage from the legendary train crash scene in the beginning of the movie right by the train tracks on the side of the road! 😆 We parked across the street at the Green Energy Park Staffed Recycling Center and went over to take a peek.

จุดสุดท้ายที่ไปแวะชมกันตั้งอยู่ที่เมือง Sylva ซึ่งอยู่ถัดไปไม่ไกล แฟนหนังฮอลลีวู๊ดเรื่อง ‘The Fugitive‘ เห็นแล้วอาจจะจำกันได้ เพิ่งรู้มาว่าหนังเรื่องนี้เค้าถ่ายทำกันที่นี่ ฉากเด่นตอนต้นเรื่องก็คือตอนที่พระเอกหลบหนีจากซากรสบัสที่ใช้ส่งตัวนักโทษไปยังเรือนจำที่เกิดชนกับรถไฟระหว่างทาง ปรากฎว่าทางทีมงานทิ้งซากรสบัสและรถไฟไว้อยู่ข้างทางหลังเสร็จจากการถ่ายทำ 😆 เราไปจอดรถกันไว้ที่ลานจอดรถของ Green Energy Park Staffed Recycling Center บนถนน Haywood แล้วข้ามถนนไปชะเง้อดูอยู่ข้างทางเหนือรางรถไฟ

For lunch, we picked up an order togo from Haywood Smokehouse, a barbeque place in Dillsboro.

แวะซื้อข้าวกลางวันจากร้านบาร์บีคิว Haywood Smokehouse ที่เมือง Dillsboro ไว้ไปกินกันกลางทาง

We found a neat little spot at Henry Fork River Park in Hickory to enjoy our meal outdoors. The food was a little underwhelming to us, despite the rave online reviews. But that could be because we didn’t eat it right away while it was still hot… 🙄

ไปเจอทำเลดีกลางแจ้งที่สวนสาธารณะ Henry Fork River ในเมือง Hickory เลยได้จอดรถกินข้าวกัน ชิมแล้วค่อนข้างผิดหวังเล็กน้อย ทั้งๆที่รีวิวเค้าว่าอาหารที่นี่อร่อยระดับห้าดาว แต่อาจจะเป็นเพราะเราไม่ได้กินกันสดๆร้อนๆหรืออย่างไรไม่ทราบ 🙄

Pandemic Pause: Meetup in the Smokies, Day 2

On the way to meet my friends in Cherokee to start out on our Smoky Mountains tour the next day, we spotted these elk on the side of the road. Thinking that this would be our only wildlife encounter this trip, Joel turned the car around so that I could snap these pictures for the record. Spoiler Alert – it wasn’t! 😉

วันถัดมาเราไปนัดเจอกันที่ในเมือง Cherokee แต่เช้าเพื่อตระเวนเที่ยว Smoky Mountains ระหว่างทางไปเจอะกวางป่าสองตัวนี้เดินทอดน่องอยู่ข้างถนน คุณสามีบอกทริปนี้อาจจะมีโอกาสได้เห็นสัตว์ป่าแค่นี้แหละ เลยอุตส่าห์กลับรถไปจอดให้เราได้ถ่ายรูปใกล้ๆ แต่หารู้ไม่ว่าจริงๆแล้วไม่ต้องก็ได้ 😉

We started off with Oconaluftee Island Park. This small park on an island features a small bamboo forest on one side. Having just been to the Arashiyama in Kyoto last year, admittedly this one was on a much smaller scale, but it has the benefit of being almost completely crowd-free, which was a huge leap from our experience in Japan! 😆

ไปเริ่มทัวร์กันที่ Oconaluftee Island Park สวนสาธารณะเล็กๆซึ่งมีจุดดึงดูดอยู่ที่ป่าไผ่ขนาดย่อมๆ เห็นแล้วทำให้นึกถึงป่า Arashiyama ที่เมืองเกียวโตที่เพิ่งไปมากันเมื่อปีก่อน จริงอยู่ว่าของเค้าใหญ่กว่าหลายเท่า แต่ที่นี่เดินดูแล้วก็สวยไม่แพ้กัน แถมมีโบนัสก็คือ เราไม่ต้องไปรบกับคนเป็นล้านเหมือนกับที่ญี่ปุ่น 😆

Besides the bamboo grove, the rest of the park was almost equally as picturesque. 😍

นอกจากป่าไผ่แล้ว ที่สวนนี้ยังมีวิวสวยๆให้เดินชมกันเพลินๆมากมาย 😍

Next, we headed to Mountain Farm Museum, where we saw a collection of historical farm structures including a barn, a smokehouse, and a blacksmith shop.

จากนั้นไปต่อกันที่ Mountain Farm Museum ซึ่งเค้ามีสิ่งก่อสร้างสำคัญๆทางประวัติศาสตร์จากฟาร์มเก่าแก่แถบนี้มารวบรวมไว้ให้ได้ดูกัน มีทั้ง คอกสัตว์ ห้องรมควัน และ ร้านช่างเหล็ก

Pay special attention to this particular sign in front of this obviously empty field for a special surprise at the end of the day… 😉

ป้ายนี้ปักไว้ที่ทางเข้า บอกว่าถ้ามีกวางป่าห้ามคนเข้ามาเดินในทุ่ง ตอนที่เห็นก็ไม่ได้คิดอะไร นึกในใจว่ากวางป่าจะมาจากไหน ทุ่งโล่งๆอย่างงี้ 🤨

Nearby Mingus Mill was a pretty spot. A quick stop for us since there wasn’t really much to see there.

ถัดไปเราไปแวะที่ Mingus Mill เป็นโรงสีเก่าที่ไม่มีอะไรให้ดูมากนัก แค่แวะถ่ายรูปเล็กน้อยก่อนจะไปต่อกัน

Mingo Falls, on the other hand, turned out to be quite a workout, with a steep climb up over a hundred steps to view the tall waterfalls from a pretty wooden bridge. We had our masks on the entire time since it was pretty crowded when we got there. 😣

ที่ Mingo Falls เราได้มีโอกาสเผาผลาญแคลอรี่กันบ้าง เพราะกว่าจะไปถึงน้ำตกต้องปีนกระไดตั้งร้อยกว่าขั้น แถมคนตรึมต้องสวมหน้ากากกันตลอดทาง เลยต้องใช้ความพยายามมากกว่าปรกติเล็กน้อยเพราะหายใจได้ไม่สะดวก 😣

We took a quick lunch break back in town at Sassy Sunflowers Bakery & Cafe. Not only does this quirky little spot serve simple, delicious sandwiches, they also have the best drinks!

จากนั้นเรากลับไปแวะทานข้าวกลางวันกันที่ร้าน Sassy Sunflowers Bakery & Cafe ในตัวเมือง Cherokee ซึ่งนอกจากจะเสิร์ฟอาหารแบบง่ายๆรสชาติถูกปากแล้ว เครื่องดื่มของเค้ายังอร่อยไม่แพ้กัน

Since it was still quite early, we took a stroll in town to digest our food a bit, and came across this abandoned theme park.

กินเสร็จไปเดินย่อยอาหารกันในเมือง ไปเจอสวนสนุกร้างแห่งนี้ เลยอดแวะถ่ายรูปไม่ได้

Later that afternoon, we drove over to our last destination of the day, Clingmans Dome, which sits right at the North Carolina and Tennessee border. There were several viewpoints along the way where you can pull over to snap pictures of the beautiful mountain views.

ช่วงบ่ายเราขับรถไปยังจุดหมายสุดท้ายของทัวร์วันนั้นคือ Clingmans Dome ซึ่งตั้งอยู่บนเขาตรงชายแดนระหว่างรัฐนอร์ทแคโรไลน่าและรัฐเทนเนสซี่ ระหว่างทางมีจุดให้หยุดชมวิวเทือกเขาสวยๆอยู่หลายจุด

Traffic came to a standstill about the last half mile or so. It took us about half an hour to make our way into the very crowded parking lot. We were very lucky to have snagged one of the last available spots before having to go back down the hill. Many cars weren’t as lucky.

ก่อนถึงซักประมาณครึ่งไมล์ได้ การจราจรเริ่มติดขัดแบบแทบจะไม่ขยับเขยื้อน กว่าจะค่อยๆคลานไปถึงลานจอดรถบนยอดเขาก็ต้องใช้เวลาเกือบครึ่งค่อนชั่วโมง 😓 ไปถึงรถเต็มพรึ่บ นึกว่าต้องเลี้ยวลงกลับไปจอดข้างทางเอาแบบที่เห็นคนอื่นเค้าทำกันซะแล้ว แต่ปรากฎว่าเกิดตาดีเจอที่เข้าไปเสียบจอดได้เกือบสุดทางพอดี

This highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was one of the top tourist spots, hence the big crowd! 😓 We hiked 0.5 mile from the parking lot up to the summit, keeping our masks on the entire time. It was brutal but the view was worth it! 😍

ที่นี่เป็นจุดที่สูงที่สุดในอุทยานแห่งชาติ Great Smoky Mountains คนเลยตรึมมาก 😓 จอดรถเสร็จยังต้องเดินขึ้นเขาไปอีกครึ่งไมล์กว่าจะไปถึงตัวโดมซึ่งอยู่บนยอดเขา คนแน่นตลอดทางเลยต้องสวมหน้ากากไว้ตลอดเวลา อึดอัดกันเล็กน้อย แต่ขึ้นไปถึงเห็นวิวสวยๆก็หายเหนื่อย 😍

From the dome, we parted ways with my friends who then headed to Gatlinburg to continue on their journey. Joel and I took the same way back through Cherokee to get back to our cabin in Bryson City. When we approached Mountain Farm Museum, we were puzzled by a long line of traffic on both sides of the road. Inching closer, we saw many police officers directing traffic and several onlookers staring and pointing at something. I immediately recalled the sign we saw earlier on our visit, and realized there were dozens of elk scattered all over the field that was completely deserted just hours before!

จากที่นั่นเราเซย์กู๊ดบายกับคุณนายหยกและครอบครัวซึ่งจะไปต่อกันที่เมือง Gatlinburg ส่วนเราสองคนขับรถกลับไปยังบ้านน้อยของเราที่เมือง Bryson City เพื่อพักกันอีกคืนก่อนกลับบ้าน พอขับผ่าน Mountain Farm Museum ที่มากันเมื่อเช้าเจอรถติดยาวเหยียดมาก กำลังงงกันว่ามันติดอะไรทั้งสองฝั่ง เข้าไปใกล้อีกหน่อยเห็นตำรวจยืนโบกรถอยู่ มีคนยืนมุงข้างทางกันเต็มไปหมด สุดท้ายมองไปที่ทุ่งเมื่อเช้าถึงได้เห็นกวางป่ากระจัดกระจายอยู่เต็มทุ่ง เราเลยไปสมทบกลุ่มฝรั่งมุงขอถ่ายรูปมาเก็บไว้เป็นหลักฐานมั่ง 😆
