This past Saturday, the weather was so nice it felt like such a crime not to go hiking! 😆 Since we have been noticing some Spring blooms starting to pop up during our weekday walks nearby, I thought it would be great to check out the trail at Eno River, where we had great luck with wildflower spotting before. It turned out a ton other people had exactly the same idea. 🙄 When we got to the parking lot there, it was at about 200% capacity! 😅 There were cars everywhere, many parked along the sides of the road because the official spots were all taken.
We quickly turned around and headed over to another obscure spot we had been before. This Day Hike Section T of the Mountains-to-Sea trail at Falls Lake on Red Mill Road in north Durham was one of the least crowded trails we know of in the area. There was only one other car parked there when we arrived.

The trail was straightforward, with distinct white blazes guiding us along the way. We enjoyed the nice quiet hike by ourselves without running into a single human being the entire way. The weather was perfect, nice and cool at 55 degrees and sunny. It was quite muddy in several spots, but nothing our trusty old boots couldn’t handle. 😆
The next morning, we drove over to the Blue Ridge Parkway, starting with Tompkins Knob Overlook.

From the parking area, there is a dirt path that leads over to Jesse Brown’s cabin and Cool Spring Baptist Church. According to the cool sign post, this was where traveling preachers held outdoor services for local families.

From there, we drove the short distance to E.B. Jeffress Park to start our first hike of the day at the Cascades Trail. The quick loop led us on a nicely paved gravel path that features all the main species of trees that can be found in the Blue Ridge Forest. The trail eventually took us across a bridge and then down to Cascade Falls, then circled back to the parking lot.

We finished the one-mile loop within 45 minutes, a little longer than expected due to the steep incline and a bit of foot traffic along the narrow paths! 😝
After that, we stopped by for the view at Lewis Fork Overlook.

Then heading on to Mt Jefferson Overlook, where we walked over to check out these cows grazing on this beautiful green pasture.

Nearby is The Lump Overlook, where we saw more cows…😄 The sign post there tells the story of Tom Dula, a confederate soldier convicted of murdering his lover, and later sentenced to death for the crime. The incident went on to gain national sensation and later inspired a popular folk song called ‘Tom Dooley‘ which was how the locals pronounced Tom’s name.

We drove over to Jumpinoff Rock, where we parked and went on our second hike of the day. The short trail took us up to the overlook that offered another great view of the Blue Ridge.

Quick stop at the Northwest Trading Post in Glendale Springs which had rave reviews online. We were hoping to grab a quick bite but unfortunately there wasn’t much being offered there in terms of food… 😆
We ended up getting lunch at Rodie’s Parkway Restaurant over in West Jefferson. These two dogs materialized out of nowhere as soon as we sat down outside with our food. They waited very politely nearby and we ended up rewarding their patience with a few scraps once we were done with the meal. 😇

We walked over to browse around at this cute little Greenhouse Crafts Shop next door while waiting for our food to be ready. They have the infamous ‘Tom Dooley‘ CD for sale inside! 😆
These four posh gentlemen came along in their matching fancy rides, and parked at the lot while we ate. We saw them visiting the Holy Trinity Church across the street so we went over to check it out after lunch.

The tiny little chapel had a beautiful Last Supper fresco featured inside, along with other really cool art pieces on the walls.

In Fleetwood, we stayed at a very cool airbnb on top of the mountain. The ‘Rustic Courage Cabin‘ came ready with everything we ever needed, and more! The cabin sits on top of a very steep road off of Highway 221. We were told that a 4-wheel-drive is recommended. 😬 Thankfully there was no rain during our stay, because our all-wheel-drive sedan barely made it up as it was! 😅

Our favorite thing about this place had to be their hot tub. What an awesome way to wind down after a full day of excursions! There was a blue moon during our stay on the Halloween weekend, and we had a perfect view of it from the hot tub. 😍
This picture perfect maple tree right outside the cabin turned out to be one of the best fall colors we saw during this entire trip. The trees on the way up the mountain cabin weren’t too shabby either! 😆
We departed upon our second mountain trip on the last weekend of October, hoping to see better fall colors this time. But mother nature was not on our side, yet again… 😔 It was way past peak foliage when we arrived, but the weather was nice and cold, and our trip still turned out to be a colorful one nonetheless! 😍
During my research for the trip, I came upon something I’ve never heard of before called ‘barn quilt trails‘. This is a tradition that was established relatively recently within the past two decades. The first official occurence started in 2001 by a quilter in Ohio by the name of Donna Sue Groves, who decided to hang a painted quilt pattern on the family barn to honor her mother and their heritage. After that, the concept took off and became prevalent in parts of the United States and Canada. Here in US, there are quilt trails available for public viewing in more than 48 states, featuring more than 7,000 quilts.

I initially thought that people were literally hanging homemade quilts on their barns. My husband pointed out, reasonably so, that it would not be sustainable, given that they had to withstand years of wind, rain, and daily sunlight. Turns out, these were squares of quilt patterns painted on pieces of metal or wood. Oh, and they don’t always have to be hung on barns either – any types of structure would do! 🤪
On this trip, we had the chance to see some of the beautiful barn quilts on display in both Yadkin and Ashe counties. Big thanks for my hubby’s patience while we drove around looking for these quilts! They were not always easy to find, even though we had the addresses. Some of them were gone. Others were so worn down they were almost unrecognizable when we actually spotted them. And a lot of the time, it was so deep inside what looked like private property, we weren’t sure if we were trespassing or not… 😬 I did my best to be quick about snapping these pictures and made sure we were in and out in (almost) no time. 😅
ทริปนี้เรามีโอกาสได้ไปชมงานศิลปะแหวกแนวหลายสีสันนี้ในเขต Yadkin County และ Ashe County ต้องขอขอบคุณคุณสามีผู้น่ารักที่มีความอดทนสูงมาก อุตส่าห์ขับรถตระเวนหาลายผ้าอยู่ได้เป็นชั่วโมงๆโดยไม่บ่นซักคำ ถึงจะมีแผนที่เป็นไกด์แต่ก็ไม่ใช่ว่าจะหาเจอกันได้ง่ายๆ บางอันไปถึงเค้าปลดระวางไปแล้ว บางอันแขวนไว้นานจนสีซีดจางแทบดูลายไม่ออก และบางที่ก็ไม่ใช่ว่าจะเห็นได้จากริมถนน ต้องเดินกันเข้าไปในเขตบ้านเจ้าของที่จนเราเองก็ไม่แน่ใจว่าไปบุกรุกเค้ารึเปล่า 😬 แต่ก็พยายามรีบไปรีบถ่ายรูปอย่างรวดเร็วที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ 😅

We only made it to this one barn quilt in Jonevilles. The ‘Rose of Sharon’ is located in front of the Yadkin Valley Museum.

Further attempts to locate more quilts were a complete failure after we ran into several road blocks due to recent flooding in the area. We came across this river where we saw a group of gawkers on the side of the road, so naturally we had to stop and check it out. 🧐 Turned out the river was overflowing into nearby properties! 😱 Besides a few police cars blocking traffic coming onto the bridge, there were a few USGS guys on the scene assessing the damage.
On our way back home we stopped by for a few more barn quilts in Yadkinville. That first picture up there showed an example of one of the ones that was out of commission. When we first got to the address, we couldn’t find a quilt. It was when we were turning the car around to leave, when I saw it out of the corner of my eye, laying behind one of the many deserted structures in the complex!
This weekend, we went back hiking, or as the New Zealanders call it – tramping, after a long break! We were trying to lay low in response to yet another explosion of numbers on COVID-19 cases, but after a month of absolutely no outdoor activities, I finally succumbed to the urge. 😛
We started off with a hike at White Pines Nature Preserve in Sanford. The small parking lot was quite full when we got there, but since there were so many trails, we were optimistic that we weren’t going to run into too many people…🤞
We began with the Gilbert Yager Trail, before continuing on to the Deep Bluffs, River, White Pines, and Schoolkids Trails, in that order. All of them were interconnected and very well marked with distinct color-coded blazes. The original plan was to take the Schoolkids Trail all the way back to the parking lot, but once we realized there were quite a few families on that particular trail, we changed course and took the River Trail back instead.

The trails took us along Deep River in parts, making this mostly dreary 😆 winter hike a little more interesting. The paths were somewhat sloppy, especially along the blue River Trail. There was a slick ice spot at one point from a recent freeze. The temperature was cold, in the low 40s but we did dress properly for the occasion, so we were comfortable.

A surprise wildlife encounter in the middle of the woods! I think we scared this possum 😬 because he started climbing up the tree when he heard us coming. He was so high up by the time we passed him!
All in all, we clocked in at 2.30 miles, which took us one whole hour because of the elevation gain. We only ran into a couple of families on the entire hike, so I’d call this a pretty good spot for a quick pandemic getaway. 😇
First up was the Old Carbonton Dam, an abandoned concrete tower on the bank of Deep River. The dam, which operated from 1921-2004, was torn down in 2005 due to damage to the surrounding ecosystems, but its powerhouse remained. Colorful graffiti art adorns the structure, both inside and out. The view of the river from the window up top was spookily beautiful. 😆
From there, we drove on to a little town called Cameron, where a bunch of old barns had been transformed into roadside canvases. About 20 years ago, David Ellis, a New York-based artist, recruited his friends to come here to his hometown and together they set out to paint old tobacco barns all over town. The locals called them ‘The Barnstormers’ and they enjoyed the attention this unexpected collection brought to this tiny town. We followed the tip on StrangeCarolinas and zeroed in at the intersection of Nickens, Stanton Hill, and Red Hill roads, where they said we could find the largest concentration of said barns. And we weren’t disappointed. Even though a lot of the paint had chipped and faded through the years, and the barns themselves falling apart, it was still quite a sight to behold. 😍

I found a map of the barnsposted online at Atlas Obscura which a user there said she got from a local antique store, just in case anybody wants to venture out there!
We ended the evening with a sumptuous meal at The Sly Fox, a quaint little British pub in Southern Pines we used to frequent pre-COVID times. There is a small courtyard section that was perfect for outdoor dining purposes. It was a cold day – temperature had dropped into the 30s 🥶 by the time we got there. No surprise we were the only people out braving the chill. But we did dress properly for the occasion, and they also had several heat lamps set up which definitely helped! All in all, we enjoyed the meal and the day out, and we are looking forward to our next excursion! 😉

The next day, we said goodbye to our cozy little cabin and headed home to our fur babies. We stopped on the way out so I could take some pictures of our surroundings. Our cabin sat at the end of Sticks N Stones Road, which was right around the corner from Hellbender Road. 🙄

At the bottom of the hill, right on the bank of the Tuckasegee River, there was this little RV campground with cute teepees called Grumpy Bear Campground, which can be seen from across the river on the main road into town. They had cool Halloween decorations out front that looked pretty spooky at night.
We stopped by to check out Darnell Farms, which was right across the street. I had a blast snapping all these pictures of their beautiful stalls and produce. They had the best “Dream Whips” fruit slushees – we got the green apple flavor, which came topped with caramel and was honestly the best thing I had on this trip! 😋
Our last tour stop was in the next town over, Sylva. Apparently, this was where they filmed the famous Hollywood movie ‘The Fugitive‘. The producer left the wreckage from the legendary train crash scene in the beginning of the movie right by the train tracks on the side of the road! 😆 We parked across the street at the Green Energy Park Staffed Recycling Center and went over to take a peek.
จุดสุดท้ายที่ไปแวะชมกันตั้งอยู่ที่เมือง Sylva ซึ่งอยู่ถัดไปไม่ไกล แฟนหนังฮอลลีวู๊ดเรื่อง ‘The Fugitive‘ เห็นแล้วอาจจะจำกันได้ เพิ่งรู้มาว่าหนังเรื่องนี้เค้าถ่ายทำกันที่นี่ ฉากเด่นตอนต้นเรื่องก็คือตอนที่พระเอกหลบหนีจากซากรสบัสที่ใช้ส่งตัวนักโทษไปยังเรือนจำที่เกิดชนกับรถไฟระหว่างทาง ปรากฎว่าทางทีมงานทิ้งซากรสบัสและรถไฟไว้อยู่ข้างทางหลังเสร็จจากการถ่ายทำ 😆 เราไปจอดรถกันไว้ที่ลานจอดรถของ Green Energy Park Staffed Recycling Center บนถนน Haywood แล้วข้ามถนนไปชะเง้อดูอยู่ข้างทางเหนือรางรถไฟ
For lunch, we picked up an order togo from Haywood Smokehouse, a barbeque place in Dillsboro.
We found a neat little spot at Henry Fork River Park in Hickory to enjoy our meal outdoors. The food was a little underwhelming to us, despite the rave online reviews. But that could be because we didn’t eat it right away while it was still hot… 🙄

On the way to meet my friends in Cherokee to start out on our Smoky Mountains tour the next day, we spotted these elk on the side of the road. Thinking that this would be our only wildlife encounter this trip, Joel turned the car around so that I could snap these pictures for the record. Spoiler Alert – it wasn’t! 😉
We started off with Oconaluftee Island Park. This small park on an island features a small bamboo forest on one side. Having just been to the Arashiyama in Kyoto last year, admittedly this one was on a much smaller scale, but it has the benefit of being almost completely crowd-free, which was a huge leap from our experience in Japan! 😆

Besides the bamboo grove, the rest of the park was almost equally as picturesque. 😍
Next, we headed to Mountain Farm Museum, where we saw a collection of historical farm structures including a barn, a smokehouse, and a blacksmith shop.

Mingo Falls, on the other hand, turned out to be quite a workout, with a steep climb up over a hundred steps to view the tall waterfalls from a pretty wooden bridge. We had our masks on the entire time since it was pretty crowded when we got there. 😣
We took a quick lunch break back in town at Sassy Sunflowers Bakery & Cafe. Not only does this quirky little spot serve simple, delicious sandwiches, they also have the best drinks!
Later that afternoon, we drove over to our last destination of the day, Clingmans Dome, which sits right at the North Carolina and Tennessee border. There were several viewpoints along the way where you can pull over to snap pictures of the beautiful mountain views.

Traffic came to a standstill about the last half mile or so. It took us about half an hour to make our way into the very crowded parking lot. We were very lucky to have snagged one of the last available spots before having to go back down the hill. Many cars weren’t as lucky.
This highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was one of the top tourist spots, hence the big crowd! 😓 We hiked 0.5 mile from the parking lot up to the summit, keeping our masks on the entire time. It was brutal but the view was worth it! 😍
From the dome, we parted ways with my friends who then headed to Gatlinburg to continue on their journey. Joel and I took the same way back through Cherokee to get back to our cabin in Bryson City. When we approached Mountain Farm Museum, we were puzzled by a long line of traffic on both sides of the road. Inching closer, we saw many police officers directing traffic and several onlookers staring and pointing at something. I immediately recalled the sign we saw earlier on our visit, and realized there were dozens of elk scattered all over the field that was completely deserted just hours before!

Back in mid September, my dear friend, who lives in Houston, Texas, decided that she needed a break after 6 long months of sheltering at home with her husband and two teenage kids. She called me up and talked me into meeting up with her in the Smoky Mountains, by the NC-Tennessee border. Even though Joel and I already had another mountain trip booked by then, I happily agreed to make a 5-hour drive to match her 15-hour journey from Texas! 😊
We left early so we can make stops along the way. We planned for a lunch stop in Hickory, which was exactly at the halfway point to our destination in Bryson City. But before that, a pit stop in a little town called Statesville to check out this cool mural by a Charlotte artist Alex DeLarge (as far as I know, he doesn’t have anything to do with the famous character from the 1970s cult classic Stanley Kubrick film ‘A Clockwork Orange’ 🙄). According to the website Strange Carolinas, where I spotted this from, there was an interesting story behind this particular Prince Mural. Apparently Mr. DeLarge did not obtain the permit required for putting his art here 😬, so local authorities planned to have it painted over, but when Prince fans staged a protest, in the end they just allowed it to stay. 😆

Just a few months later, the same artist decided to pull the same trick with a Muhammad Ali mural right across the same parking lot. But that one got removed immediately after 😐, so now there is only a faint residue of the portrait left, but you can still definitely make out the contour of his face on the wall. There are a couple other pieces of work there too – apparently they did get a permit for them!
อีกไม่กี่เดือนถัดมาเมื่อคุณ Muhammad Ali มาเสียชีวิตลงติดๆกัน คุณ Alex แกคงได้ใจจากคราวก่อน เลยไปลงมือเพ้นท์รูปนักมวยชื่อดังไว้ที่ฝาผนังฝั่งตรงข้ามโดยไม่ได้ขอใบอนุญาตอีกเหมือนเดิม ปรากฎว่าคราวนี้ทางเจ้าหน้าที่ลงมือรวบรัดทาสีทับโดยไม่รีรอ 😐 สรุปแล้วเลยเหลือไว้แค่รอยรูปจางๆอยู่บนฝาไว้ให้เห็นทุกวันนี้ ถ้ามองใกล้ๆจะเห็นเค้าโครงหน้าคุณ Ali ยังเหลืออยู่ลางๆ นอกจากงานศิลปะสองชิ้นที่ว่าแล้ว ในลานจอดรถเดียวกันยังมีงานอื่นไว้ให้ดูกัน เข้าใจว่าเจ้าของคงจัดการขอใบอนุญาตกันเรียบร้อย เพราะยังคงอยู่กันครบ
Our lunch stop at Bubblys, a Korean fusion spot in Hickory. We ate in the car because their limited outdoor seatings were all occupied.
On the way over, I realized for the first time why they named these mountains the Blue Ridge! 😉
จากนั้นขับรถกันไปต่อตามทาง มาได้หน่อยสังเกตเห็นทิวเขาสีฟ้าสวยอยู่ไรๆ ถึงมานึกได้ว่า อ้อ เค้าตั้งชื่อเทือกเขาไว้ว่า Blue Ridge Mountains ก็เพราะอย่างนี้นี่เอง 😉
Next stop was at the store Country Time Swings in Maggie Valley to snap a picture of this giant red rocker chair! The store, like many others, was closed due to the pandemic. 😔 The chair itself does not rock, by the way, for safety reason they said. Still a very cool photo op spot nonetheless! 😊
จุดนัดถัดไปเป็นร้านชื่อ Country Time Swings ในเมือง Maggie Valley ซึ่งเค้ามีเก้าอี้โยกขนาดยักษ์สีแดงเด่นตั้งไว้อยู่หน้าร้าน ตัวร้านเองติดป้ายปิดกิจการไว้หน้าประตู คาดว่าคงจะเพราะพิษโควิด 😔 ไหนๆมาแล้วเลยขอปีนขึ้นไปเก็บรูปไว้เป็นหลักฐานซักหน่อย 😊 แต่ขึ้นไปนั่งเก้าอี้แล้วปรากฎว่าไม่โยก เพราะเค้าบอกว่ากลัวจะเป็นอันตรายต่อแขกผู้มาชม 😆
This next one was my favorite of the day! 😍 Mountain Mike’s was also closed, but you can still browse through this very impressive collection of carved wooden artwork lining their front yard.

The only destination on my list that day that was opened for business was Soco Crafts, where a big sign out front boasts that this is the ‘Most Photographed View In The Smokies’. 🤔 We paid the 50 cent fee each to walk up this tower next door to get a glimpse of the bragged upon view… And it was pretty impressive. 🙄 I’m not sure if it lived up to the advertisement, but it was definitely well worth the tiny pittance they asked for it!
Shortly after, we came upon the tiny parking lot for Soco Falls. It was very easy to miss if you weren’t looking for it. A short walk led us to these spectacular multi-tier waterfalls. The leaves were just starting to turn there, making it even more beautiful than any regular average-day waterfalls! 😍
Last but not least, another roadside gem courtesy of Strange Carolinas! This long abandoned roadside motel on Highway US 19 in Whittier is one of the most disturbing sights 😨 I have ever seen. It’s hard to imagine how they decided to build the motel around these trees in the first place, and why they thought it would be a good idea…🤨
We checked in to Erica’s Dream, our cozy little cabin in Bryson City before meeting up with my friend and her family for dinner in town.

Joel got a free beer at Mountain Layers Brewing Company, paid forward by a kind stranger. We enjoyed the colorful dusk sky of this tiny mountain town from their rooftop section while we waited for our dinner reservation at The Bistro at Everett Hotel, just across the river. It was great catching up with old friends, even in the middle of the pandemic!

After that we went back to the cabin and relaxed in the hot tub with a glass of wine, after the long day. To make it even more special, we had this barred owl to keep us company while we were out there! 😍 After that, a quick shower and a warm relaxing night in front of the roaring fire!
Even with 2020 being such an abnormal year, we still tried to maintain some sense of normalcy by keeping our holiday Christmas lights tour tradition intact. This year, after being cooped up at home for months on end, we set out for not one or two, but three total excursions in all! 😊
First, we drove an hour away to see the Electric Light Fantasy at Whirligig Park in Wilson. It turned out to be quite a laughable event, just not in the way we intended… 🙄 We were asked to get there 45 minutes before the show started. About 15 minutes out, they started letting the cars in. There were about 30 cars lined up in the small parking lot. The show began with these two laser sources projecting lights up into the sky, with Christmas songs playing in the background. We kept waiting for more to come but soon realized that was pretty much it. 😐 You basically saw the entire show from all the pictures up there, just imagine all the popular Christmas songs in the background and there you have it! 😆 The kids in the cars in front of us lost their interest before the second song started. And the guy in the car next to us was on his phone pretty much the entire time! 🤣
รายการแรกคืองานแสงสีเสียง Electric Light Fantasy ซึ่งจัดขึ้นที่ Whirligig Park ในเมือง Wilson อุตส่าห์ขับรถไปตั้งเกือบชั่วโมงเพื่อไปดู ดูจบน้ำตาแทบไหลด้วยความตื้นตัน 🙄 เค้าบอกมาว่าให้ไปถึงก่อนเวลาโชว์ 45 นาที รอซักพัก 15 นาทีก่อนเริ่มรายการเจ้าหน้าที่ก็ทยอยโบกรถให้เข้าไปจอดเรียงกันในลานจอดรถขนาดกะทัดรัด กะดูแล้วประมาณซัก 30 คันได้ พอได้เวลาแสงสีเสียงเริ่มต้นตามกำหนด มีไฟเลเซอร์สองอันส่องฉายขึ้นไปบนฟ้าเต้นไปมาเป็นจังหวะตามเพลงคริสต์มาส ไอ้เราก็นึกว่าอันนี้คงเป็นการวอร์มอัพ เดี๋ยวคงจะต้องอลังการมากกว่านี้ รอไปรอมาชักจะเริ่มตระหนักว่าเออนี่แหละนะมันอลังของเค้าแล้ว 😐 คือประมาณว่าดูรูปข้างบนแล้วจินตนาการเพลงตามไปด้วยก็คือเหมือนได้ไปดูโชว์ด้วยตัวเอง 😆 เด็กๆในรถแถวหน้าตื่นเต้นกันอยู่ได้ไม่ถึงครึ่งเพลงแรกก็เลิกดูกันแล้ว ส่วนคุณพี่ผู้ชายรถถัดจากเราตาแทบจะไม่ได้ละไปจากจอโทรศัพท์ในมือตลอดรายการ 🤣
A week after that, we set out for a proper light tour in south Durham, following the route offered by Built Story. In general, we feel that people put a lot more effort in their holiday lights game this year – one of the rare COVID benefits I suppose! 😛 We saw many good displays on the route, but nothing blew us away until we arrived at the last one on the list…

‘The Griswold House’ looked exactly like the house on the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation house in the movie! 😳
On the way to Durham, we noticed this bright light illuminating the whole sky half way there on the I-40 freeway. It looked almost like a huge wildfire, so eerie and bizarre that we decided to stop by and check it out on our way back. It turned out to be some large greenhouse operation at this biotech company in the RTP. Mystery solved! 😆
Since we felt like we didn’t get quite enough from our Durham tour, we decided to set out on yet another tour a few days later, this time in the southeast Raleigh, Knightdale and Clayton area. Again, these were all new to us, since we never came out this way in the previous years. There were some really great displays, mostly homemade production. We did see one big show in a park in downtown Lake Myra, but didn’t stay long because it was crowded and there were quite a number of people there no mask on. 😐
All in all, another good year of Christmas light tour! 😍 It did help bring us some joy amidst this darkened pandemic time. Here’s a bonus one we saw on the way to our Korean grocery store in Cary one night. My husband sure wanted to know how they got all the lights so high up those tall trees! 🤔
It’s finally time for another Pandemic Pit Stop chapter! It’s been a while since our last trip, because we were busying traveling. 😛 With not one but two trips to the mountains packed in during the month of October, we simply did not get a chance to venture out closer to home at all. Until now, that is! 😊
Chapel Hill is a fun college town located just half an hour from where we live. It is the home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, America’s first public university and the flagship location of the UNC system. Having been here so many times, I never realized how many cool spots this place has to offer. We found them neatly tucked away all over town.

There are so many beautiful gravestones here, from really old ones…
to a more contemporary collection of truly unique ones… 😇 These are one of the most creative gravestones I had ever seen – such a great way to celebrate your loved one’s life after they are gone! That last one featured the lyrics from an American folk song made famous by the band Nirvana in the 90’s.

We made a quick refuel stop at BeerStudy and Al’s Burger Shack downtown. One thing we noticed while walking around is that people here take mask wearing 😷 very seriously – kudos to them!
After that, we stopped by UNC campus to check out the Crouching Spider sculpture, located right across from Memorial Hall. This 27 x 9 feet piece of artwork was created by French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, from bronze and stainless steel. This is another traveling installment. It was originally scheduled to be relocated back in August, but was still there when we visited, so I assumed there must be a COVID delay…🙄

Not far on the eastern end of campus is the location of Gimghoul Castle, buried deep in the woods next to a classy neighbourhood at the end of Gimghoul Road. This mysterious looking structure is shrouded by legends and rumors on its origin. One story alleged that it was the location where a former UNC student named Peter Dromgoole got murdered from a love triangle gone wrong. 😬Another painted it as the meeting place of a secret society for students and faculty members called the Order of Gimghoul.
ปราสาท Gimghoul แห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่ในป่า สุดถนน Gimghoul ถัดจากหมู่บ้านหน้าตาไฮโซที่อยู่ติดกับบริเวณมหาลัยด้านตะวันออก เรื่องราวลึกลับเกี่ยวกับต้นกำเนิดของปราสาทนี้มีมาหลายกระแส บ้างก็ว่านี่เป็นที่ๆคุณ Peter Dromgoole นักเรียนเก่าจาก UNC ถูกฆาตกรรมจากเหตุรักสามเส้า 😬 อีกสายนึงก็ว่านี่เป็นศูนย์บัญชาการของสมาคมลับเฉพาะ Order of Gimghoul ซึ่งตั้งขึ้นสำหรับกลุ่มนักเรียนและอาจารย์ระดับหัวกะทิจากมหาลัยแห่งนี้
From there, we drove to the western end of town to check out another unique structure, known by many different names: Hartleyhenge, Stone Knoll, or the NC Stonehenge. It features a set of stones that form a shape of a spiral, with 4 giant slabs sitting on each corner that symbolizes each end of a compass. According to StrangeCarolinas where I got wind of this from, there was not much information about it online, except that it was built by an architect named John Hartley. This reminds us of Callanish Stones, a similar but much larger and much much older formation we saw on the Outer Hebrides in Scotland a few years ago.
There were beautiful inscriptions engraved on the 4 large stone pieces, topped with different sets of animal footprints, including White Buffalo hoofs, Coyote paws, Bear claws, and Eagle talons.
