Contemplating where to go hike this weekend, Joel recalled a daffodil cluster we saw in the middle of nowhere on a hike we went on in Chapel Hill last year. So, last Saturday, we set out to see if the flowers were still there. I refreshed our memory by pulling up a blog post I did on this back then, and realized it’s where we found these cute trinkets hidden all over the trails. Hence, the mission expanded to include finding these little gifts in the wild too. 😊

The forecast originally called for rain, so we planned to go on Sunday. But, when we woke up on Saturday and saw no more impending rain on the radar, we decided to just go for it. We parked on Laurel Hill Road, right behind the back entrance of the North Carolina Botanical Garden and started off on the Streamside Trail.

From there, we took Oak Hickory Trail to Elephant Rock Trail. This was where we saw all the hidden trinkets last time. Alas, no matter how hard we looked, we couldn’t find any this time. 😕

The daffodil patch was still there, but it was all barren too. 😔
While hiking along Morgan Creek on Elephant Rock trail, Joel happened to spot these bushes with beautiful pink flowers along the bank, on the other side… He was confident we would be able to get to it. 🙄 So, naturally, we gave it a try! 😛

After a couple of creek crossings, and some bushwhacking through our homemade trail, we emerged on what looked almost like a trail on the other side. 😅
All in all, at the end of the day, we had another fun & adventurous hike under our belt. 😇 We clocked in at 3.56 miles, which took us a little under 2 hours, most of which time was spent paving our own way in the wild. 😆
This weekend, we found ourselves without any plan for the first time in over a month, so we decided to take advantage of the relatively nice weather before the summer heat here gets too unbearable… 😣 Carolina North Forest was one of the viable options that had come up the last time we were looking for a place to hike in Chapel Hill. We went with the Piedmont Nature Trails back then, so this time we thought we’d give this UNC urban sanctuary a try.

I have never been here before. Joel, on the other hand, had come biking here with his brother back during college days. We almost bailed, since it felt almost like it would be too hot 🥵 when we first stepped out in the sun, even though the Weather App said it was 75 degrees… 🤔 But it has been several weeks since we last hiked and we really wanted to get one in, so we decided to just ‘drive there and see’. 🙄
We took the Crow Branch Overlook Loop counterclockwise from the Locust parking lot. It was a dirt track, and quite heavily rooted in parts, but well maintained.
There were numbered signs along the trail to let you know you were on the right track. We started off with number 20 and counted down to 15 before we cut over to number 8 and made it all the way back to 1. This effectively shortened the entire trail by about half or so.
This place is a proper forest. 😄 Once we started off on the trail, we got enveloped in this nice cool shade almost immediately. The full coverage remained with us the entire way. The trees were lush and green, which was such a nice change of scenery from the bare winter branches we had gotten used to seeing everywhere over the last several months.
The trail took us by a decent sized lake, around spot marker number 4.

We clocked in at 2.92 miles in a little over an hour. Overall, a really nice relaxing hike. We look forward to coming back here to explore the rest of this trail and the others at some point in the near future!
We went back hiking again this weeknd, this time at Piedmont Nature Trails in Chapel Hill. I had actually picked another trail nearby at Mason Farm Biological Preserve, just because it looked to be the closest to my real goal of the day, which is to be featured later in this post. 😊 Somehow, Google Map directions led us here to the Piedmont Trails instead! 🤨 We only realized it when we saw the map at the trailhead. Since we did not have our hearts set, we just went along with it. 🤣 In any case, we had no expectation whatsoever before we got there. But this ended up being one of the best hikes we’ve had in a long time! 🤩
We started off with Streamside Trail, then switched over to Oak Hickory Trail, before hopping on Elephant Rock Trail which ended us up at Arboretum Drive, where we turned around and headed back. We ran into a few people in the beginning and towards the end, but once we got a little further uphill, the crowd started to thin out. There are no blazes on these trails, but color-coded trail markers are there at every turn. We had no trouble finding our way at all.
Things started to get more interesting once we got on Elephant Rock Trail. We noticed another couple heading towards us stooping down to take a look at something on the side. We waited until they left before going in to check it out. That’s when we saw this purple unicorn 🦄 hidden in the crack of a tree stump. My brain immediately translated the situation into a treasure hunt challenge! 😆 From then on, I kept my eyes peeled, scanning every nook and cranny we passed along the way.
And I am happy to report that we spotted not only one or two, but FOUR more, mostly on the way back! 😎 It definitely helped take our minds off the steep climb when we were concentrating on finding these trinkets. 😆 Most of these little bits and pieces were found on the Elephant Rock Trail. But we did find one on the Oak Hickory Trail as well.

A note about this so-called ‘Elephant Rock’… We scrutinized it from many different angles. We even climbed on it, to get yet another perspective. But neither of us saw any elephant there. 🤨 A lion, maybe. 🧐 A gorilla, could be. 🤔 But, no, definitely not elephant! 🙄😝
Past the rock, the trail started hugging alongside Morgan Creek.

Shortly afterwards, Joel turned around and looked at me with wild eyes. 😲 I followed his gaze to one side of the trail and had to step closer to realize I was looking at a daffodil patch! Right here in the middle of the forest! 😳 It was clearly man-made because there was a path right through the middle of it.
We ran into yet another random bush of beautiful flowers! 😍 Camelias, I think… 🤔 White, blush pink, hot pink, bright red, you name it! My mind was officially blown! 🤯
We clocked in at 3.66 miles, which took us 1 hour and 41 minutes, most of it uphill, which would explain my elevated heart rate almost throughout the entire hike! 😛
After that, we headed to what was supposed to be the real intention behind this hike. Meet Fresh is a Taiwanese desserts shop chain, with several locations all over the US. The one we went to was located at Meadowmont Village in Chapel Hill. My friend tipped me off on it and I had been itching to try. 😋

We ordered the Pudding & Q-Mochi Shaved Ice. I did not expect such a huge portion. 😳 Together, we were able to finish roughly half of it, before we called it quits. 😅 It was good. I’m glad we tried it. But if we ever make it back there, I’ll probably order something else… Something that comes in a hopefully much more reasonable serving size.
After desserts, we moved on to the main course. 🤣 Hubby went with Al’s Burger Shack, which was voted Best Burger in America in 2018 by Food & Wine Magazine & TripAdvisor! I opted for the Penang Char Kway Teow from Rasa Malaysia right across the street, over in South Village. Both equally delicious, if you asked me! 😉
It’s finally time for another Pandemic Pit Stop chapter! It’s been a while since our last trip, because we were busying traveling. 😛 With not one but two trips to the mountains packed in during the month of October, we simply did not get a chance to venture out closer to home at all. Until now, that is! 😊
Chapel Hill is a fun college town located just half an hour from where we live. It is the home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, America’s first public university and the flagship location of the UNC system. Having been here so many times, I never realized how many cool spots this place has to offer. We found them neatly tucked away all over town.

There are so many beautiful gravestones here, from really old ones…
to a more contemporary collection of truly unique ones… 😇 These are one of the most creative gravestones I had ever seen – such a great way to celebrate your loved one’s life after they are gone! That last one featured the lyrics from an American folk song made famous by the band Nirvana in the 90’s.

We made a quick refuel stop at BeerStudy and Al’s Burger Shack downtown. One thing we noticed while walking around is that people here take mask wearing 😷 very seriously – kudos to them!
After that, we stopped by UNC campus to check out the Crouching Spider sculpture, located right across from Memorial Hall. This 27 x 9 feet piece of artwork was created by French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, from bronze and stainless steel. This is another traveling installment. It was originally scheduled to be relocated back in August, but was still there when we visited, so I assumed there must be a COVID delay…🙄

Not far on the eastern end of campus is the location of Gimghoul Castle, buried deep in the woods next to a classy neighbourhood at the end of Gimghoul Road. This mysterious looking structure is shrouded by legends and rumors on its origin. One story alleged that it was the location where a former UNC student named Peter Dromgoole got murdered from a love triangle gone wrong. 😬Another painted it as the meeting place of a secret society for students and faculty members called the Order of Gimghoul.

From there, we drove to the western end of town to check out another unique structure, known by many different names: Hartleyhenge, Stone Knoll, or the NC Stonehenge. It features a set of stones that form a shape of a spiral, with 4 giant slabs sitting on each corner that symbolizes each end of a compass. According to StrangeCarolinas where I got wind of this from, there was not much information about it online, except that it was built by an architect named John Hartley. This reminds us of Callanish Stones, a similar but much larger and much much older formation we saw on the Outer Hebrides in Scotland a few years ago.
There were beautiful inscriptions engraved on the 4 large stone pieces, topped with different sets of animal footprints, including White Buffalo hoofs, Coyote paws, Bear claws, and Eagle talons.
This weekend we ventured out to Chapel Hill to a couple of trails I read about recently on WRAL that we’ve never heard of before. We pulled into a very small parking lot off of NC 54 and Fordham Boulevard, and were able to grab the last available spot there.
We weren’t really sure where to go since we had not been there before. Just on a whim, we decided to cross the bridge then veered left on to a dirt trail that looks promisingly secluded. That took us along the creek. A few stones steps were laid there to take you across a narrow section of the creek into a more wooded area. There were a few offshoot paths that you could take to go down and explore the creek more closely.
We took the dirt path to the point where it seemed to end abruptly with a couple of huge downed trees. From there we turned back and figured we would check out another small path we saw on our left when heading in. It was a very narrow trail, hardly a foot in width, and would be very easy to miss if you are not a seasoned hiker 😎. This took us deep into the woods. It was obvious that it had been quite a while since anybody had been on this route, since we walked into tons of spider webs along the way! 😓
Just when I was starting to get a little worried 😐, not sure where the trail was taking us, we rounded a bend and ran into more downed trees… I recognized almost immediately that these were the same ones we encountered before, from the other side! We ducked under and emerged right where we turned back just a moment ago. We realized later on that this was not part of the official trails that we were planning on taking. But it turned out to be our most favorite part of the hike that day! 😆
From there, we walked back towards the bridge, then took the trail the other way, onto the official Morgan Creek Trail. This was the opposite end from Merritt’s Pasture. It was only a short distance from the bridge until it ended at a nearby apartment complex. Towards the end you’ll have to scale this giant pipe in order to cross the creek, which added to the fun! 😛

After that we walked back to the parking lot and went the other way on Morgan Creek Trail, heading towards Merritt’s Pasture. You can either take the nicely paved path, or a side unpaved trail that cut through a couple of its sections. We opted for the latter to avoid the crowd.

The trail takes you under Highway 15-501. It got really pretty as we approached the pasture from all the pretty fall colors that’s just starting to come in.
At one point we spotted a large creature flying above our head. Joel called out that it was a turkey vulture. I looked up to locate it and realized they were having quite a party going on. 😆 Spreading across a few trees, we counted almost 30 of them up there. 😳 It was quite a sight to behold, to say the least! 😅
We finally reached Merritt’s Pasture and set out to take the 3-quarter-mile loop clockwise. It was a beautiful day and a lot of people were lounging around in the pasture enjoying the unseasonably warm weather. We spotted a couple picnicking and a couple of groups doing a photo shoot. Fortunately the trail itself was not that crowded. We only ran into a few people before we completed the loop.
We found traces of cotton on the ground during the first quarter. There was a cute bench equipped with a bell and a bird house in the middle, courtesy of the Merritts Family. Then, the trail went into a more wooded area before emerging right next to the creek and looped back to where we started off from.
All in all, we clocked in at 3.60 miles, which took us about an hour and a half to complete. By the time we got back to the parking lot, there were tons of cars lining up the side of the road, squeezing in wherever they could. While this was a cool spot, we doubted we will ever come back due to the crowd. 😕 But it’d be a great hike for someone who can wake up early and get there before the crowd!
